OK, I went home and sure enough it worked like a charm. Exactly what I was looking for. If I have one complaint its that the K-5 Owners Manual could have been a little clearer on how to operate this feature. In fact I have found examples of the manual not being very clear. Thanks for the help guys.

I followed the instructions on page 127 exactly as you descibed but all the 4-way did was change the lighting type (bright, outdoors, tongston, etc). I must have re-read that section 5 times and always got the same results. I don have the camera with me but I'll try it again tonight. Thanks

Help with K-5 Focal Point

I just got my K-5 and I’m still learning all the great features of the camera. One thing has me stumped and I could use a little help from a fellow K-5’er.
I know the camera has an eleven point auto focus system but I either have it set wrong or don’t understand it completely. On a friends Canon 6D, the ‘Red Dot’ in the view finder will move from one focal point to another each time you press the shutter button down half way so you can select the focal point you want. But on my K-5 the Red Dot stays in the center. Is there a setting on the camera to make it work how I described the Canon?

Can someone tell me what the different class designations are for SD Photo Cards?

I just boought a new K-5 and when shooting RAW it uses up the 4 gig cards I'm using pretty quick.

Are there different higher 'speed' cards?

Thanks

Where to buy a K-5

Here is an update for anyone interested. I received my K-5 today which I purchasedfrom Buydig.com and I’m pleased to report that the camera arrived exactly ontime and was in perfect condition with all factory items in the box asadvertised. After checking the serialnumber I was pleased to find that it was not a grey market camera but a U.S.model as expected. I purchased thecamera entirely online and never heard from Buydig other than for the shippingand tracking emails. I purchased thecamera on the 28th of Sept and received it yesterday, Oct 4thas promised with only the standard free shipping offered. The only ‘con’ to the whole transaction isthat the camera could have been packed a little better with a little moreinsulation but otherwise it arrived intact and 100% O.K. Cost for the camera after using an onlinediscount coupon was $815.00 for the body alone. For the record I would recommend them and purchase from the again.

I followed dmeadows85 lead and place my order with Buydig for the K-5. Using an online rebate it cost me $815.00. According to Fed-x the camera is in transit with an ETA of Oct 3rd. The transaction was very simple, 100% done online and never received a single 'upgrade phone call'. The final dettermination of how well this transaction went will be when I receive the camera. I will of course post my findings shortly there after.

Age Old Pentax Question
Posted By BobbyA

First let me say that I have been a Pentaxian for 30 years or more and plan to be until someone pry’s my Pentax from my cold dead hands. So being such a fan of Pentax I often wonder why they are not more popular among photographers and those in the photo industry. I live in Las Vegas and there is not a single camera store that carries Pentax products.
I am also always looking for a camera or camera accessory deal on sites such as Craigslist and on any day I’ll come across a number of new ads of people selling Canon or Nikon cameras and lenses, but hardly ever do I come across Pentax items. The only exception being someone selling a K-1000 for $300 who obviously thinks a lot of his old camera or thinks they are collectors’ items.
I therefore believe that one or more the following observations may be true:
1. Most photographers just haven’t found their way home to Pentax yet.
2. We just know more than the average Nikon slob.
3. We hold on to our gear longer and then pass it on to the next generation of family photographers.
4. Pentax does one hell of a great job of making cameras but one lousy job of marketing.
If someone has the answer to this puzzle I would love to hear it.

Poll: Who are better photographers?

Great question, one that seems to come up very often among photographers I hang out with. But I voted ‘NO’ and here is why.
A lot of old school photographers I know look at digital photography as an easy way around the art and science of fine art photography. They look at DSLR’s as a trained photographer may have looked at an old instamatic camera thirty years ago. But I disagree completely. As an old school film photographer that has made the magic leap to digital, I see it as an entirely new media with almost unlimited creative potential, especially when combined with processing software like PS-CS5. Something I could not even imagine twenty years ago. I firmly believe that digital photography has unleashed the creative talents of countless people that would have gone otherwise unfound. I look at the work of some these creative minds on sites such as Model Mayhem and such and I’m just blown away and inspired.
But I also believe that there is a lot to be learned from those old school photographers and that in digital photography lies a trap that can truly hold the modern photographer back. That trap is what I call “machine gun shutter syndrome”. Here is my favorite example of what I mean by this. In 1941 soldiers were taught in boot camp ‘one shot-one kill’. Sixty years later they are taught ‘enemy suppression through mass firepower’. The same goes with photography. When you took into account the cost of film and film processing years ago you were very careful with each shot and used time and skill before each press of the shutter. Today your only limited to the size of your SD card. I think about this often and sometimes I even pretend that I’m still using my old Pentax K-1000 film camera when setting up a shot and the results are usually worth it. But would I trade my DSLR for my old SLR? NO WAY!

3 things you wish you knew when you started

Three things I wish I knew when I (re) started photography

1. If I knew this would be so addicting I would have found a way to survive making $200 a week a long time ago so I could spend more time shooting and less time working.
2. If I knew photography would be this much fun, I would have spent less time and money on musical instruments as a kid. Why? You don’t have to rely on other lazy photographers to take pictures and the gear is a lot lighter to carry.
3. Buying a camera is just the beginning and collecting stamps would have been a hell of a cheaper hobby.

I was afraid of getting an answer like that! lol But thanks, that was very helpful. I was hoping for a quick answer but I already knew it would be a trial and error sort of thing, as well as personal preference. $1000 lenses are out of my range so its more about finding the best for less.

I have the DA 18-55 that came with the K-x. I have not received the K-5 yet and I intended on using the DA 18-55 from the K-x kit until I find and buy a lense better suited to the K-5. I think my initial question was geared around whether the Pentax lenses are superior, or can you get a better lense for less money with a Tamron or Sigma (or other)?
Is there a simple answer as to what makes one lense better than another?

I have a K-x and just ordered a K-5 and I'm currently using the kit lenses and I have to admit that I'm a bit of a lens rookie.
I found this lens and the reviews on this site seem to real good, the price right and for the work I do it would work very well for me.
Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 Compact zoom.

1. Is anyone have an experience with this lens and if so is it good or bad?
2. What should I be looking for in a quality lens?
3. Will this lens offer an quaility improvement over the kit lens I'm using now?

Any lens help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the portrait work I do is glamour and boudoir, not family and such and so I often shoot in low light to acheive the proper mood and setting. I love the K-x in every way except in low light situations where I feel the photos are slightly grainy and must be corrected in PS. I also need another camera to serve as a backup for photo gigs and from what I see the K-5 is about as good as you can get. Now I just need to find a deal!

I see that you own a Kx and K5. Silly question but I have to ask, do you see a major difference between the photos that the two cameras produce?

I currently own a K-x and its time to upgrade to a K-5. With the announcement of the K-5II I noticed the K-5’s have come down a bit and perhaps the time is right.
I have noticed some great prices at the following places:
$799 at BPPhoto
$739 at Daxmart
$839 at Buydig
All seem too good to be true and all have their fair share of bad reviews.
1. Has anyone here had any experience with these guys?
2. Can anyone recommend a place to get a good deal on a K-5 right now?
3. With the announcement of the K-5II, what is the opinion of the forum whether the prices on the K-5 will drop further or should I buy now while they are available?
Thanks

Dirty densor on K-x

Thanks All. The focusing screen is dirty but it doesnt bother me much. The dirt on the sensor is a pain and each photo has to be photoshop'd to remove the blur from the photo.
The inside of the camera is obviously dusty now seeing that its showing up everywhere. Is there any way of cleaning the inside of these things, like a camera vacum? lol
