I'd Print and Hang This - Your Best Film Shots

I posted this image early on in my PF life. It is my most favorite of all the photos I've ever captured.

During the summer of 1986, my Ex and I were on a 4 day-3 night "free" trip to Acapulco we "won" after falling for a timeshare sales pitch. On this day we were watching the cliff divers from the opposite side of the inlet. I attempted shots for every dive, perhaps 8 to 12, and this one stands out. The contrast of the cliff and the water and the diver (maybe 12 years old) in mid-air with both the cliffs and the sea as backdrop - that's what works for me.

I kept a 5x7 print of this on a cork board at my office. I would print this in large format, perhaps as an inspirational poster with "Confidence" or "Daring" emblazoned along the bottom. However, I lost the negative many many years ago. Below is a scan of the 5x7 print, with some scratches and the push pin hole created when I first hung it at the office.

I used my K1000, a J.C. Penny 80-200mm zoom lens, a 2x converter (not sure if I used it), and probably some variety of 100 speed Kodak film - as I preferred minimal grain.

A few shots from last fall - it takes me a while to accumulate 36 exposures. :asleep:

These were shot on Velvia 50, using my KX with a SMC M50/1.4

The first one was right from Dwayne's scan result. The last three I used the Elements levels tool to tweak the lighting a bit.

Fred

After months of enjoying the images here, I finally decided to add my first post in this thread. I bought my first MF kit about seven months ago - a P645 with the 75mm lens. Over time I also picked up the 45mm and 150mm. I've been slowly getting acquainted with the system - only shot five rolls in seven months so far. Here are a few shots from my most recent roll. These were shot on Ektar 100 with the 75mm lens, Dwayne's developed and scanned them, no post other than re-sizing.

Hi, my name is Fred and it's been four months since my last...oops, wrong group. But really, I haven't made a single post to any thread since November. Lots of reading, no posting.

In the meantime, seeing all these medium format images peeked my interest enough to get myself a Pentax 645. I've only shot three rolls so far, learning as I go. I thought these might be worth sharing...

All were lab developed and scanned.

+1 for Dwayne's. I use them to develop, print, and scan. Turnaround time for me is about ten days or less. They haven't failed me yet.

Here are the results of a few fairly recent early morning outings. I used the KX with Ektar. I don't recall the lenses - most likely the K24/2.8 or M50/1.4.

There was a little fog on the creek during this morning shot.

I use Dwayne's Photo (A trusted name in photo processing for over 50 years - Dwayne's Photo) for my developing. For every roll (35mm) I send them, I write some identifying information on the plastic canister which contains the roll. For the return trip, the results of each roll is placed in it's own envelop, with the same identifying info written on it.

Typically, the only info I care about is which camera I used and the date I finished the roll. For example, I'd write "KX 11-16-14" on the canister, and that's what is on the envelope when the work is returned.

I should point out that this happened completely by accident. I had written the info on the canisters for my own benefit while the undeveloped film was still in my possession, assuming that the canister would get tossed at the lab and that would be the end of it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the information copied to the envelops when the developed film was returned.

And turnaround time isn't too bad. I recently mailed three rolls on a Friday (from Maryland to Kansas). Dwayne's received it on Monday and had the results in the mail to me that Friday. That worked out nicely, as the weekends were used for shipping time.

EDIT: I neglected to mention the CDs... Dwayne's does not label them. But you can do that yourself since the envelop has the information you need.

I enjoy seeing everyone's work here using their K10D. Thanks to all of you for sharing your images.

Here's a shot from earlier this month. I was attempting to catch a blue heron in flight using a Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 LD. But it turned out a blurry mess. However, my wife loves the abstractness of it, and now it hangs in our living room on a 24x36 canvas. So, in the end, I'm very pleased with the result.

Ok Steve, these are for you.

I used the MX and the M50/1.4 with Velvia 50 here. They're starting their version of King of the Hill.

I missed the exposure and the focus on this next one, but I really like the photo, primarily because of the goatee in the shadow. I use this as a reminder to pay attention to the details. I used the K2, K24/2.8, and 100 speed film, although I don't recall the brand (hmm, details).

Nice couple of series ivrabec985. I like the second one - that rock reminds me of a frog.

Steve, Phil, you asked for it... ;)

more goats.

Here's another round of king of the hill, from spring 2012. I used the K1000, M100/2.8, with Fuji 800. I don't care for these faster speed films - too much grain. I've since limited myself to 400 or slower.
The exposure could have been better here, but I'm glad I caught the action.

About a year later, I shot this one with the black KX and M50/1.4, which has become my favorite combo. The film is Kodak Gold 100.
Here's proof that goats prefer something other than grass. He has easy access to about half an acre of grass, but prefers to chew on this pine tree. Notice the fine line running horizontally through the center, provided by the lab's scanner throughout the entire roll.

And one more, this one at the heat of battle. From 2011, using the K1000 and M50/2.0 with Fuji Superia 200.

cheers,
Fred

It's been a while. Here's a few of a local bridge at sunrise. I used the MX with the M28/2.8, loaded with Kodak Gold 100.

First attempt...

I like this crop better.

And then this one a minute or two later.

I've been reading so much from other forum members about the many fine attributes of the MX, I had to see for myself.

In April I found this body and lens on evil-bay. The photo doesn't do the body or lens justice - they are almost perfect, except that the lens arrived with a bent aperture ring (that's a thread all it's own - and I rather just let it go). Using another lens, I shot a test roll. Even though the shots didn't indicate a problem, considering I didn't know the history of the body, I decided to send the body along with the lens to Eric. He was able to correct the aperture ring, to the point the bend isn't noticeable, and of course, the body is now flawless after his care.

While Eric had the body and lens, I tracked down the Winder. The auto winding is nice, but the real advantage is the grip it provides.

So far, I'm only on my third roll. But I'm thinking this will be one of my more frequently used bodies, along with the KX.

So, may I be first in line when you're ready to sell? :D

Edit: Nice camera BTW, and yes, I'm jealous.

It's been a while, but I finally managed to shoot and develop a roll. This time I loaded the black KX with Velvia 50 slide film and I did my own scanning using the Canoscan 9000F.

Much of the roll was shot using the SMC 400/5.6 with a T6-2x converter. It was the first time using the lens, and adding the TC to it turned out to be a mistake. While the TC offered a longer reach, most of the images were soft. With hindsight, I wish I shot without the TC so I could see what the lens could do on its own.

Images are untouched other than reducing the size to meet forum requirements.

No accumulation yet! SMC M50/1.7

Robin atop a sweet gum, SMC 400/5.6 with T6-2X converter

Oh Dear! SMC M50/1.7

Noel's Bouquet, SMC M50/1.7

Here's another with the 400 and T6 converter. I was indoors and several hundred feet from the subject. I don't recall the apeture setting but the shutter was just too slow, 1/15 I think. But at least I have some evidence these big birds eat snakes. (You will just have to trust me on that. :))

Got it!, SMC 400/5.6 with T6-2X converter

Poll: Film vs. Digital

So, I'm the one guy shooting color film only. My age? Not quite 60.

I've enjoyed film off and on since the late 70's, but much, much more in the last two years. And although I have owned a few digital point and shoot cameras, I never really enjoyed using them, and I'm too cheap to spend the initial outlay required to go DSLR. But to each his (her) own.

Today I own seven film bodies and an assortment of manual focus lenses - I'll likely keep using film until the last lab shuts down.

cheers,
Fred

As usual, the work displayed in this thread inspires me to improve my skills. Someday, I may be worthy.:hmm:

In the meantime, here are a few recent shots using the K2.

Mums, M28/3.5, Kodak Gold 200, Dwayne's processed and scanned

Manny the Mischiever, M28/3.5, Kodak Gold 200, Dwayne's processed and scanned
Manny is my only troublesome goat. We needed to build a bigger fence for him, as he could jump the original one.

Wow! Awesome thread. I can't understand why I didn't find it until today. I love classic cars. Went to Capitol Raceway in the mid-sixties with my dad and his buds. They all raced - a 62 Chevy Impala, 56 Chevy Belair, and a 64 Plymouth Valiant.

Each spring, Ocean City, Maryland has a classic car event, Crusin' Ocean City. Thousands of old cars converge there from Thursday thru Sunday. I've missed the event for quite a few years:asleep:, but thought I'd share a few images from a decade ago. Shots taken with my first digital point and shoot.

cheers,
Fred

Yeah, I've tried this. But ya know, you actually have to sell something, or they catch on eventually.

In the meantime, I picked up a smc-m 200mm/4 yesterday, should arrive next Friday. Just two lens left to get. Yep, just two.
