Resurrecting the K-01 - need a new workhorse lens recommendation

Thanks for all of the recommendations everyone. I really appreciate all of your input.

I ended up picking up a DA 18-135 3.5 on ebay as an all around lens. After playing around with the k-01 for a few weeks, I decided that I'm pretty happy with my legacy glass and the 40mm XS. Now I need to figure out if I should keep my GRii 16.2

Heading to Iceland in 2 weeks and prepared for some night work on the tripod to catch the aurora borealis. Feel like I'm going to be using my smc m 28mm 2.8 pancake for those shots. Bringing the 50mm 1.4 M also.

Unfortunately, I'm only using my K-01 and GR 16.2 only once or twice a year. Looking to buy a more universal lens option so I can get better utilization. I've always had difficulty with my legacy manual prime lenses, and just end up using the bundled AF 2.8 40mm lens.

I'm mostly doing family portraits around the holidays. Read a lot about the FA 77 & 85, but just really don't want to spend that much on these prime lenses, as they just wont get the utilization they deserve. Can you recommend a broader lens that may suit me better? I'd like to stick with k-mount Pentax branded glass.

All attached pics were taken with SMC DA 40mm 2.8.

currently have:
SMC Pentax-M 1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 2.8 28mm
Takumar Asahi 2.5 135mm
Vivitar Series 1 - 2.8-4.0 70-120mm

Thinking of selling my manual glass

Lately, I've been getting more pleasure taking "in the moment" shots, and street photography. I'm not as patient anymore to perfectly compose each shot and deal with tripods. That being said, I've really been having a frustrating time using my manual lenses with the k-01, particularly with shutter speeds and aperture. Everything works great, but there is a lot of trial and error. Even more than with my old film MX. I find myself wasting a lot of time for one photo.

The 40mmXS bundle lens is the first autofocus lens I've ever owned & used on an interchangeable camera body. Don't laugh. This "new" technology has blown me away. Im considering ditching all of my manual lenses and looking for 2 more lenses to complete my setup. I find myself using my 50mm & 135mm most of the time. Never use the telephoto lenses anymore and I find my 28mm too grainy for my taste. Below are my current lenses. What would you suggest getting to complement the k-01? I'm looking to start off with one limited lens first and pick up something else later on down the road.

SMC Pentax-M 1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 2.8 28mm
Takumar Asahi 2.5 135mm
Vivitar Series 1 - 2.8-4.0 70-120mm

im using all k mount bayonet lenses

SMC Pentax-M 1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 2.8 28mm
Asahi Takumar 2.5 135mm
Vivitar 2.8-4.0 70-210mm

I dont know if im doing something wrong, but in M mode, the screen still says Av(aperture priority, automatic exposure). switching between AV TV or M doesnt change anything.

here are some totally random shots I took with most of the lenses. i seem to be getting decent results, but i still think im doing something wrong.

Im having a great time with this camera, but im still confused on how I should be properly using my manual lenses. Ive mainly been using M mode & Av mode and Im getting good results. Im just confused on what I should be doing with my aperture ring. Do I adjust it at all, or let the camera do the work? I haven't had enough testing time to figure out if going up or down even makes a difference.

I read that M mode wont hold the lens at wide open, but It always seems like the lens is wide open.

For all the US Pentaxians who wanted the silver body, there is one for auction on eBay right now.

I got lucky this week & picked up one on eBay as well. A used, pristine condition, White K-01 w\ 40mm XS for $366 to my doorstep. After a year of lurking, I finally got one!!!!

Recommend me a $70-85 P&S for my gf

Ended up getting the Canon 3400is bundle for 90 bucks. This should do the trick. Plus, Canon is my favorite P&S. Still use my SD500 7.1mp. Works awesome with the underwater housing & strobe flash.

My girlfriends P&S kicked the bucket a while ago, and I figured I would get her a new one for Christmas. She wouldn't know the difference if I gave her a Leica M8 or a GE digital camera, as long as it takes pictures. I do feel a little guilty that I'm not looking for top(or even middle) range cameras, but it would be a waste of money.

So far, im looking at:

Canon PowerShot A810 16.0 MP - Good price, mixed reviews, ugly as sin

Canon PowerShot A3400 16.0 MP - Okay price, small zoom, looks a little better

Nikon Cool Pix L26 16.1 MP - Looks cool, not a Nikon fan

I'm open to any makes and suggestions.
I really have 2 criteria.

#1 - I dont want to spend more than 90 bucks to my door.
#2 - I need a good performer at low light. She loves taking pics of us at restaurants, wedding receptions, family gatherings, etc. I'm tired of having to constantly re-adjust her iso to get a decent picture.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Do I need to worry about Pentax's new pricing policy?

Ive been holding out on the K-01& XS lens kit, with hopes that the price will drop a little bit. Now that Pentax is issuing a new pricing policy tomorrow, can I expect the prices to go up, or will they just not go down. I'm ready to buy this thing today if it will save me money.

Does my old glass justify purchasing the K-01?

just got back from Adorama. They had no problems letting me play around with the K-01 and my old lenses that I brought in. The screen on this camera is fantastic. I think it will do just fine without a VF. Even with my 200mm lens, I was able to keep it fairly steady and take focused pictures. I couldn't figure out how to use focus peaking, so I'll be gong back soon. Too bad the floor model didn't have the XS lens on it.....really wanted to see it in the flesh.

I'll definitely be buying this camera.

I was really excited when the rumors were floating around about the K-01, but now that we have the official scoop, I'm falling out of love with it. I don't own a DSLR yet (still using my MX), and have recently given up on film. Im a Pentaxian, and always have been. I would love to stick with their product line. Ive decided that I don't need a DSLR and would be happy in the high end mirrorless market.

I do love my lenses though, but after seeing how much they are going for on eBay these days, maybe its time for me to start thinking about new lenses, even if it means using another company. I still, sort of, want the K-01. Do you feel these lenses would be a step backwards for me on a new body? Should I just sell them all, cut my losses and start from scratch?

here are my lenses:

2) SMC Pentax-M 1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 2.8 28mm
Takumar Asahi 2.5 135mm
Vivitar Series 1 - 2.8-4.0 70-120mm

Manual SLR lenses on D-SLR or Mirrorless

That's a great point. I didn't think of that. I guess a viewfinder will be a deal-breaker for me.

Manual SLR lenses on D-SLR or Mirrorless

Since the rumor came out about the Pentax K-01 mirror-less with K-Mount, I've been really excited to jump to digital. Im still using my Pentax MX, but quality film processing is getting to expensive & inconvenient for me. I've always known that I would be purchasing a Pentax digital body, because I love my K-mount lenses. I'm just trying to make things less bulky when I'm in the photo mood. The K-5 is not the direction I want to go.

My main question is:

How will my manual lenses work on a digital K-mount camera, particularly a mirror-less design like the K-01. I've never used an autofocus SLR before, so I don't think I'll be missing that function. I'm concerned if photos wont come out properly because the camera cant acknowledge manual adjustments like an auto focus. Do they work fine immediately? Are certain adjustments needed to be made in the camera settings? Do the bodies need to be modified with different equipment(sensor, focusing screens, etc.)?

I have:
SMC Pentax-M 1.4 50mm
SMC Pentax-M 2.8 28mm
Asahi Takumar 2.5 135mm
Vivitar 2.8-4.0 70-210mm

New K-01 mirrorless camera coming

I'm very excited for the release of this camera, and its really coming at a great time for me. I've never purchased a D-SLR camera yet. Ive been lugging my 35mm Pentax MX around the world with me for way too long now. After paying an arm and a leg to develop 10 rolls of film recently, I have given up on film, permanently. Also, I think the airport x-rays messed up the rolls, even with my lead-lined film bags.

Ive always been looking for D-SLR's, but have always wanted to stick with Pentax bodies because of my K-Mount lens collection (Pentax SMC 1.4 50mm, Pentax SMC 2.8 28mm, Asahi Takumar 2.5 135mm, Vivitar 2.8-4.0 70-210mm). I'm willing to deal with using manual lenses on auto-enabled bodies, as long as they work together and produce stunning photos. Its definitely been hard for me to justify spending close to a grand on a K-5 body. Photography isn't my profession, and there are plenty of great cameras to buy for $500.

Honestly, I get excellent photos from my Canon Powershot SD500 (7.1 mp) Point & Shoot, but it can never replace a lens & body setup. Ive been really interested in mirror less bodies since they started coming out, particularly the Sony Nex. I like the smaller layout, with the ability to change lenses. I especially love the fact that this K-01 will have a built in flash, which isn't on the K-5. There's nothing I hate more than a big bulky flash taking up space in my camera bag, especially when I'm away. I know they have their purpose, but its too infrequent for me to buy & carry a new one.

Last week, I sold most of my film stuff on eBay, making good money on everything (better than I thought I would get!). Extra bodies, lenses, flashes, filters, housings, winders.....etc. I was gonna use this to buy the K-5 body anyway, even though it isn't what I was exactly looking for. Than i found out about the release of the K-01. I think that this K-01 is exactly what I'm looking for. It'll be cheaper than the K-5, smaller, has a flash & a K-mount. The only negative I have with this camera is not having a viewfinder. Maybe there can be an add-on to the hot shoe? I will actually use it more often, than just pulling out my Point & Shoot Canon.

Any assumptions on how much it'll sell for? How long after these things are launched until they reach the shelves?
