What Price You are Ready to Pay for KP Successor?

If you drop a lens made by company offering professional service you can easily fix the broken lens for the next wedding.
If you drop a lens made by 'mainstream' company you can easily borrow another one so your nearest work won't be threaten.
If you drop a lens made by 'niche' company you can only (almost) pray. Obviously if you don't have any backup gear (what is not costless).

I have to emphasize that I love my KP and pictures it can generate together with da* lenses but if I were a professional photographer whose the main job is taking photos I would choose other system, maybe keeping Pentax just for fun and pleasure.

Obviously others can have quite opposite opinion :)

FF vs. APSC

Hi,

I'm still here :) I'm listening to the whole discussion and only convicing myself to stay with apsc. The last two weekends I was able to play outdoors with my KP and found the results really excellent. Maybe in a few months I'll acquire the new 16-50 and it will be enough. Buying K1 would only open the Pandora box with all these GAS, LBA and other disasters. Definitely I'd like to avoid them as much as possible ;-)

Regards,
Paulo

I bike a lot, when I'm not riding a bike I'm on trekking. These are whole day trips rather than longer, a few days excursions. My heart tells me to acquire a set of K-1II, three amigos and incoming (who knows when?) dfa21mm. My brain screaming our "Stay with apsc!!!". Definitely I will be waiting with any purchase for Black Friday. Now I think it will be da*16-50... but let see what will happen ;)

FF vs. APSC

You are partially right. Partially because I already have da*300 and da*60-250 which work perfect on FF, so I would need to invest only in FF body and 24-70. But I'm afraid that after a while I would start thinking about 31/43/77 (yes, I'm crazy!!!). This is the real reason which holds me back from K-1II. Weight? C'mon, in my backpack sometimes I carry Pentax dlsr and my Hassy 500c...

If the new da*16-50 was somehow cheaper I would not have any problem and just buy it (Ricoh, can you hear me?!?!!??)

Anyway... guys, thank you very much for this discussion. I'm going to dip my head in cold water, cool it down and focus on apsc :)

Hi,
nice to see chaps from eastern Europe here :-)

@Aksel, you need to go little bit deeper to Southern parts of Poland, try Biebrza National Park in Spring, when thousands birds are arriving from Africa and Mediterranean countires, visit Podlasie, Bieszczady etc.

@Chris_K, indeed, it is more than worth to visit Estonia but you have to be prepared for exceptional number of mosquitos in some places ;-) Anyway, Parnu and Tallin are free from these insects and will amaze you with their beauty!

HD DA 35mm 2.8 limited Macro as Lanscape lens

I had 3 samples od SMC DA21 and all of them could not be compared with HD version. Do not want to say they were poor but simply the latter is much better. I spoke also with one guy from local dealer, he also confirmed that HD DA21 is improved. No idea what was changed, but seems Pentax really did something to better "fit" lens performance into resolution of modern sensors.

SMC DA21 is really not a super sharp lens, however it deserves the good place in photo bag.

HD DA21 is MUCH better in terms of sharpness on all f-stops. It has also better contrast, better flare resistance and is generally the piece of glass which I really love and recommend to everyone.

Jump from K3II to KP?

Thanks Guys for replies :-)

In regards to K-3II pics quality I miss the rendering from K-5. K-3II creates really good pics but in my opinion too much 'analytic' (if you know what I mean). There is lack of 'something' I was able to get from K-5. Tried different settings in Lightroom but only with mediocre results. For those who ever tasted classic B+W photography: I would compare K-5 to Agfa Apx100 souped in Rodinal whereas K-3II would be Kodak Tmax100 developed in any modern developer.
Regarding KP - I would miss neither the 2nd SD card slot nor upper display. The only one thing making my concern is short battery life, it can be a problem during the whole day outdoor trips in e.g. -15 C (however I never treat the camera like machine guns ;-) I usualy make no more than 60-100 pics per day).

DA20-40 weird AF issue

Thank you, BigMackCam! Just read the article about focus shift and wonder that the behavior of AF in my lens could be intentional. As mentioned it was recently adjusted in Pentax service, maybe they programmed it to compensate focus shift effect... Pictures taken at aperture previously pre-set during autofocusing are sharp, problem is only when photo is made on lower aperture values (especially wide open - shallow DOF) than used for autofocusing, as described in my initial post.

Anyway, it is the 1st time I hear about focus shift in my ~30 years play with photography...

Paulo

Jump from K3II to KP?

Pal, it is matter of perception. K-3II is my 3rd DSLR - the 1st was k200, it was really nice, especially with da* zooms, the 2nd one was K-5 and was the best. K-3II gives technically perfect (almost) pictures but in my eyes they are not as beautiful as those from K-5. That's all :-)

Jump from K3II to KP?

Hi,

I'm thinking quite seriously to jump from K3II to KP. I bought K3II ~2 years ago after years of usage of K5 and from the beginning was quite happy with the AF performance but the K3II sensor itself have never impressed me in landscape or nature photography. Now I have a strong inclination to exchange K3II with KP. Have anyone of you made such decision and can say anything about impression how KP performs in low ISO in comparison to K3II? Almost (or even all) rave about high ISO but I could not find any opinion about low ISO...

Regards,
Paulo
