BARFOUT! published today the eighth volume of the 'Short series PENTAX Film Project Club House Diary':

Short series PENTAX Film Project Club House Diary vol.8 Guest: AAAMYYY×TAKAO IWASAWA | BARFOUT!

At the beginning of the interview, they mention a Kyocera Samurai camera. In Europe these cameras are known as Yashica Samurai. There are several models, including the X 3.0, X 4.0 (both numbers refer to the zoom range), Z, Z-L (for left-handers) and 4000 iX.

The first three are camcorder-style half-frame SLRs from the late 1980s with a built-in zoom lens. The 4000 iX, from 1998, is similar, except for its APS format.

I think there will be long between new digital cameras, film or no film. The way I see it, DSLR is such a mature technology that Pentax has pretty much reached the ceiling for what THEY can do - unless they want to try to become a completely different brand (Leica. With just as high prices). They rely on sensors and all kind of specialized stuff, they cannot make themself - they "just" stitch all these units together. Film they can make - it is mostly mechanical and optical engineering, what they are best at.

Each and every guy here waiting for a K1 III have slightly different needs and wants, and half will be disappointed once it arrives (and slam the door). Meanwhile the APS C-brigade will start talking about how their life have come to a halt while they have been waiting for K3 IV (which should have feature A and B, but absolutely avoid feature C.

I am pretty sure we'll see an K1 III eventually, and then later another C. But there will be several years between each release now. Enter film ...

In short, a mix of:
  • Ricoh Auto Half: half frame, zone focus, 25mm focal length (same angle of view as a 35mm on a full frame camera);

  • Pentax Espio Mini / UC-1: small body, high quality f/3.5 Cooke triplet; and

  • Ricoh 35R / MF-1: P, Av and Tv modes, exposure compensation, autofocus / manual zone focus, f/3.9 Cooke triplet, some tricks (*), plastic body, price divided by three compared to the contemporary Ricoh GR1s.

(*) The lens cap covers part of the viewfinder, so you won't forget to remove it when taking a picture.
The small dot to the left of the lens is the CdS cell which, thanks to its position, takes into account any filters fitted.

Hello everyone, I'm a photographer based in Taiwan.
I'm thrilled to share with you the events that took place here over the past two days.
Please bear with me as my English proficiency may not be sufficient for precise descriptions.
I appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Firstly, let's talk about the activities on the first day.
The primary focus of the first day was a gathering of PENTAX fans in Taiwan.
The nature of the event leaned more towards an internal assembly of core members.
The organizer was the local agent in Taiwan, which has a long-standing collaborative history with PENTAX in Japan.
Since the era of ASAHI Optical, they have been actively involved in managing the sales and representation.

The main content of the first day's event revolved around sharing information about the PENTAX film project.
There were interactive Q&A sessions with responses from Mr. TKO and Mr. Aki from PENTAX,
including insights shared by the CEO of the Taiwan agency.

Unfortunately, I'm currently unable to share details beyond a certain scope on the internet. I hope you understand.

Regarding the user-submitted questions,
Taiwanese users raised several inquiries, including the following:

1. About K-1 III
2. About progress update on film cameras
3. About sales-related questions about film cameras
4. About DFA* wide-angle fast lenses / 2nd generation DA 50-135
5. About the Q series system
6. About the 645 system
7. About possibility of a mirrorless system
8. In the film project, questions about developing and film-related matters

Regarding the eight questions mentioned above, please understand that I cannot reveal too much information.

The responses are as follows:

1.To achieve a higher level of precision, more time than initially anticipated has been invested.
The procurement of digital camera components has become considerably more challenging than before.
However, please be assured that it is currently in progress. Kindly be patient and await further updates.

2. Progress is going smoothly.

3. Details cannot be disclosed at this time.

4. The primary goal at the moment is to increase business growth and expand into new customer segments.
Efforts toward these objectives will be made in the future.

5. In Japan, there have been users expressing interest in restarting the Q series.
However, the Q series has certain limitations in specifications, and feasibility studies on this matter will be conducted.

6. This project is currently in a later stage of the sequence and cannot be undertaken immediately.

7.The difficulty level is very high.

8. Regarding the production volume and pricing of film, we hope to increase partnerships through the film project.
The aim is to stimulate the film photography market and bring about positive changes.
The same applies to the development process.

The content of the second-day event was similar to the first day,
with the main difference being that the first session was for inviting PENTAX FANS,
while the second session was for inviting film enthusiasts. Additionally,

the second session showcased a small portion of the developmental prototype and offered hands-on experience with manual film cameras.

Regarding the details about the prototype,
I cannot disclose too much, but its size is not large. I believe its dimensions may fall somewhere between the GR and ESPIO 70.

The above provides an overview of the event content. If this article seems to lack substantial information,

I apologize, and thank you for reading.

For my part, something between a joke and a wish.

The current Ilfocolor is ISO 400, isn't it? Ilford Ilfocolor 400 Vintage Tone has nothing to do with Harman Technology. It's sold by Ilford Imaging Europe GmbH, which owns the rights to the Ilford brand and trademarks for photographic applications (and licenses them to Harman Technology / Ilford Photo for black and white film, paper and chemicals). Rumour has it that it's a cold stored Ferrania Solaris 400 from a decade ago.

Ilfocolor 100 and Ilfocolor 200 were manufactured by Ferrania in Italy. Production was discontinued between 2009 and 2012.

Actually, they did. The part about the smc FA 50mm f/1.4 Classic was the most interesting part of the event. There were some interesting tidbits about the development of the lens.

They explained that the original idea came from people who enjoyed the iridescent rainbow ghosting that occurred when framing the sun with old lenses like the Super-Takumar 55mm F1.8 on a K-1 with an adapter.

They knew that when the Super-Takumar was replaced by the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, the inner frame of the lens barrel was redesigned to eliminate internal reflections.

They simulated the light reflection on the inner frame of the smc FA 50mm f/1.4 with and without a 'certain device' added between the Super-Takumar and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. The presence of a 'rainbow ring' was confirmed in the simulation.

They made a prototype and were able to reproduce the 'rainbow ring'.

They ran further simulations and discovered that by adjusting the shape and surface treatment of the inner frame of the lens barrel, they could control the intensity of the rainbow ring. (If the rainbow rings are too strong, they turn white.)

By the way, the smc 50mm f/1.4 Classic is called 'smc' even though the coating on its lens elements has been renewed since the smc 50mm f/1.4. That's because it has different characteristics to the HD Pentax lenses.

Pentax film camera project: interview with Ricoh Imaging Europe

The consumers started speaking with their wallets regarding supporting camera stores decades ago, and then along came the internet and consumers in general stopped supporting local shopping.
This was just an extension of the consumer war on stores that have been going on since the early 1950s.

The common consumer "complaints" were why should I spend an extra ten bucks at my local shop when I can save that money with online shopping? Sometimes this omitted that the shipping charges pushed the final price past the local store, sometimes it didn't.
Or, why should I go to a camera store for information from a clerk who has to do the same research in front of me as I can do at home? (like as is every minimum wage store clerk is going to be a walking encyclopedia).
Doing research at home and then going into the store with a specific product request never seemed to occur to this group.

We consumers drove local camera stores and a lot of other small businesses out of business by not supporting them. It's about 20 years too late to complain that they no longer exist.

A few days away from the Salon de la Photo in Paris (5 - 8 October) Fautpaspousserlesiso.com ("don't push the isos dot com" :)), a French-speaking talk show dedicated to photo and video, interviewed many players of the photo market, including Yazid Belmadi, press relations ans sales promotion manager at Ricoh Imaging France. As a result, they published the following podcast on the 28th of September:

Episode 2 : Le marché de la photo en 2023 - Faut pas pousser les ISO

Here below the transcription of Yazid Belmadi's statement (which begins around 1h23min):

Translation by yours truly:

"Last December we announced the launch of a film camera project. Of course, the project is still on track. It will see the light of day in spring 2024 with the arrival of two cameras.

As far as the type of film camera that will be released next spring is concerned, it should, as a first draft, be two compact cameras, high-end in terms of technical specifications but not in terms of price. They will be relatively affordable. It'll be a first draft, two compact cameras, followed by SLRs, of course, which are the cornerstone of this type of cameras.

Since we announced this project in December 2022, we've had a lot of feedback from retailers and potential consumers who have told us how impatient they are to see these products arrive. There seems to be a very strong demand for film cameras.

Our strategy for quite a few years now has been to work with very, very, very niche products, and we're doing quite well. To achieve this, the Japanese management team relies on surveys of Japanese consumers, both within the brand and beyond.

As with the GR series, the project to release film cameras is the fruit of extensive consultation with a number of players in the photo industry, particularly Japanese consumers, since experience has shown us that it works quite well when you make products in response to consumer demand, as they are those primarily concerned.
"

Note: Yazid Belmadi used twice the expression "premier jet", the translation of which is "first draft". I think that he rather meant "dans un premier temps" (as a first step, to begin with, initially) or "comme première concrétisation" (as a first concrete step / outcome). However I chose not to alter his choice of words.

New President of Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd., Yasutomo Mori, effective Oct/01/2023

There's no English announcement yet as far as I can see, but Ricoh announced that Yasutomo Mori is appointed as the president of Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd. effective Oct/01. The news release page (1st link) doesn't say anything meaningful other than that there's an important news about executive(s), you need to open a pdf document on that page (2nd link) to see what it's about:
2023年10月1日付 重要人事異動のお知らせ
https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/release/2023/pdf/0921_1.pdf

As a result of this, Mr. Mori won't be the top of the corporate planning division of Ricoh Industrial Solutions Business Unit any more, but he will continue to serve as the president of Ricoh Industrial Solutions BU, an executive officer of Ricoh, and the president of Ricoh Elemex Co. Ltd. which is a company specialized in precision machining. Even though Ricoh Elemex used to make wristwatches, they don't any more. This might be Mr. Mori's first tenure as an executive of a consumer product busness.

It seems that the outgoing president Akahane has done what he thought he had to as an ex-investment-banker specialized in restructuring businesses. Even though we don't know what Mr. Akahane really did, we know that Ricoh Imaging made a profit after years of reported losses (Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd: Profit of ~1.14 billion JPY for FY 2022-23) and that's probably related to this change. I hope that something good comes out of this.

Ricoh/Pentax Interview

After spending the better part of 45 years in electronics manufacturing, from management to manufacturing engineering, some things that I read about developing and releasing a new camera body make me laugh.

Yes, Pentax and other manufacturers do use certain technologies in more than one body. Things like the main processor is just one example. However, short of re-using all of the molded plastic parts of the body and not changing the size or shape at all, all bets are off for much of the rest of the design as soon as you start changing other parts.

The K1 to K1 II is the sort of change that does work that way, and even that change was pre-planned leaving hooks and room for the extra processor.

Even after you spend months mocking-up and testing the look and feel of what the camera might look like (which always requires several rounds of marketing and management review and approval), just designing and tooling the molded parts takes many months and often, several iterations.

Also, since Pentax does not make chips and certain other assemblies like shutters, they have to work with outside contractors to either make what they want, or modify an existing design to the specs they are looking for. An existing shutter assembly might work as-is off the shelf, but the main processor would always have to be built/modified/coded to work with the rest of the parts in the system.

Cameras are very complex assemblies with hundreds of parts and a lot of very precise components that all have to fit and work perfectly along with being able to be assembled and calibrated with a reasonable amount of labor.

My guess is that, even with modern prototyping methods, CAD, etc., a camera development cycle is several years long.

However, I think that the release of the K3 III does bode well for at least one more generation of the K1. They have finally done the work to have a decent AF system, they can probably use whatever processor they used in the K3 III, so basic code is in place for things that are the same or similar (writing RAW files, Jpeg conversion, AF fine tune, shake reduction all would be very similar blocks of code I would think).

No manufacturer posts any development information, schedules or plans. You get what they choose to design and release based upon their view of what customers want and how the product will fit against the competition. Do bigger players release more products in a given time frame than Pentax? Yes, but they have all moved or are moving to mirrorless only (it is simply cheaper to make mirrorless than a DSLR and it has some well-known advantages, including robotic assembly, as well as some disadvantages) and Pentax has decided to stay and play in whatever niche market remains for DSLRs when the dust clears.

Hopefully, Ricoh will not decide to wave the white flag of surrender and will stay in this market producing Pentax products we all want and can use for the foreseeable future, albeit at a slower pace than we might want.

Lastly, is the pricing issue. I have been shooting Pentax sine the late 1970's. For many years, the brand was a significant value proposition, where the quality was as good or better than the competition at a lower price. About the time AF came along, they fell behind and went cheap, not trying to build products that competed at or near the top of the market. This never works.

Now, Pentax being still behind in some areas during the digital age, the consumers, conditioned to either the early value proposition or to the cheap years, are unwilling to pay higher prices for Pentax gear, often claiming the difference in price isn't worth the lag in performance. I have been listening to the price wailing for at least a decade, but I have also looked at the prices of things like the Nikon Z line (remember, mirrorless is cheaper to build than a DSLR) and Nikon pricing is absolutely eye-watering.

BH Prices -

Pentax K1 II, DFA 24-70 f2.8, DFA 70-200 f2.8 - $4700

Nikon Z6 II, Z 24-70 f2.8, Z 70-200 f2.8 - $6200

$1500 more for basically the same kit (yes, I know the Nikon will out perform the K1 in AF and perhaps some other areas like buffer depth/speed, but other areas do not favor the Nikon).

I wonder how many who complain about Pentax prices would run out and pony up $6,000+ U.S. for the Nikon kit?

Pentax Clubhouse, 2023/Aug/21

I had an opportunity to visit Pentax Clubhouse on Aug/21. Last time I went there (about a year ago) it was still new and my visit was limited to 30 minutes. This time there was no such limitation, and I only saw two other customers during my ~1hour visit, which meant that I had more time to chat with the staffs there.

I first asked for cleaning and checking my K-3III, which was supposed to be JPY 3300 (there was a nice report by @ongaku99: Pentax Club House to open in Yotsuya, Tokyo). Even though I knew my K-3III sensor was in a good shape, I just wanted to experience what the service was like. To my surprise, the service staff looked at the sensor using a loupe and immediately said "Mr. kwb, the sensor looks pretty good, not many dusts, certainly no large ones. I'll still check things, but I won't charge you unless I clean the sensor. It will take about an hour." What? He'll work for an hour anyway, right? I won't complain if I'm charged JPY 3300 just for his time!

While waiting for the checkup, I saw a K-3III Monochrome (probably Matte Gray version) with 40mm Ltd on the display counter. I asked one of the staffs behind the counter if I can try it out, and he told me that I can put my SD card in the camera to keep the data. Cool, I thought, but the next thing he said was even cooler. "There aren't many subjects here, please feel free to go outside if you'd like." Maybe that's because he knew that my camera was still in the shop and they have my order form (for the cleanup work) with my name, cellphone number and address, but I was still struck by the trust they had on their customers. I left my backpack there (nobody told me to do so but I felt as if that was a fair "exchange") and went outside with K-3III monochrome. I didn't feel comfortable enough to go too far from the Clubhouse, so I stayed within ~100 meters (~110 yards) radius for maybe 10 minutes or so, but that was enough to have a lot of fun.

After coming back in, I continued to talk with the person who let me handle K-3III Monochrome. (Below is based on my memory, any errors are on me.)

Me: K-1 successor?
Clubhouse staff (CS): Working on it, but no news. Film compact might come first.

Me: Is there going to be the successor of DA* 60-250?
CS: Haven't heard of a plan for that, at the moment we're pointing customers to D-FA 70-210 or D-FA* 70-200.

Me: Is it really true that the development of DSLR and lens are NOT affected by the Film Project?
CS: It's true, film project is not delaying development of digital. They're different beasts and not much overlap.
(I actually had much longer conversation about the film VS DSLR, but I'll just skip it here except that I felt as if the K-1 successor is NOT something that could be brought to the market earlier by throwing person-power at it. That means, at least to me, that we won't see the next K-1 for some time, certainly not this year, but I could be wrong.)

There was one thing that was bugging me for some time, that is, the youtube video titled "What Pentax Values Most in the Future Cameras" was made private at some point. That video was released at the same time as the Pentax brand statement (and the Five Principles of Pentax). You might remember a thread about that (What Pentax Values Most in Future Cameras). If you click the link to the video, you'll see "video is private" error message.

Youtu.be

Is that because Ricoh's direction is not well aligned with the video any more, or something else that is somehow a sure sign of an imminent Doom? :) I didn't say that to him but I simply asked why the video was pulled. Another (third) staff was pulled into conversation and apparently this was a surprise for both of them.
After a while, one of them said "oh, it could be the model release issue". Model what? He asked me if I remember that the video featured a white male model posing with a camera in his hands. OK, I did remember that. He told me that there was a poster featuring the same model, and that poster had to be pulled because the contract for the model was only for a limited time and RI didn't extend the contract. He said there could have been the same issue for the video, too, and Ricoh could have chosen not to extend the contract as the video has served its purpose well to deliver the message to the intended audience. Though I've never imagined that the model contract could expire in just 3 years, it sounded convincing to me, and I was happy to know that this was not a bad omen at all.

At this point the first (service) staff came back, saying that my camera was good. He cleaned the camera here and there, removed small dusts from the sensor (but he didn't charge me, so I guess he just blew them off using blower?). He also checked focus of the camera with my DA* 16-50 PLM (which was good) and updated the firmware from 2.00 to 2.01. That's a lot of work for no money charged! I was a happy customer.

I bought two D-LI109 batteries for my KP (I also wanted to buy Q batteries but they don't have any in stock), thanked them all, and left the Clubhouse. That was a great experience.

Attached are some of the pictures I shot with K-3III Monochrome. The first one is the wall of the Clubhouse displaying monochrome prints shot with K-3III Monochrome. The second and the third are where they were demolishing a small building, the way rubble and things are neatly contained and the way they're working in a tight space looked very Tokyo-like to me.

Pentax will NOT make a GR monochrome

Plausible.
Tanaka san wrote "They cannot do it for a certain reason even if they wanted " (my translation, this part is kind of messed up in the original article). If the subject of this sentence is Ricoh Imaging (it's unclear in the Japanese sentence), the reason why it cannot be done has nothing to do with RI's willingness or unwillingness to make GR monochrome, therefore it could be something like the sensor availability as you wrote, and GR monochrome might come eventually.

It's also plausible that the subject is the GR team in RI, i.e. the GR team wants to but can't do it as RI as a company isn't cool with that. In that case, "a certain reason" could be something that is still true when the next generation of GR is released. Some of the things JPT listed in the earlier post might be relevant here.

Ricoh Imaging are holding an exhibition 'It's time for film!' at Kitamura Camera in Shinjuku from 1 July to 31 July.

This exhibition features photographs taken by Shiori Iwakura on black-and-white film (a first for her) as well as on colour film. Cameras used: Pentax LX and Pentax 67.

The exhibition also features Pentax film cameras, prototypes and drawings of film cameras, plus "one more thing". :)

Digital Camera Watch published an interesting article about this exhibition:

【イベントレポート】開発中のフィルムカメラ試作機をサプライズ展示…PENTAX特別企画展「It’s time for film!」 - デジカメ Watch (original article in Japanese)

[Event Report] Surprise exhibition of film camera prototype under development... PENTAX Special Exhibition "It's time for film!" – Digital Camera Watch (Google translation)

Not only are Ricoh Imaging exhibiting past film cameras...

Pentax SP

Pentax Metalica and Memorica

...and drawings... ...

including drawings of the new manual winding mechanism...

...they're also showcasing a film camera mock-up / prototype.

Those who'd plan to visit the exhibition shall note that the historical film cameras and the new film camera prototype are only on display on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays when staff are present.

Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd: Profit of ~1.14 billion JPY for FY 2022-23

All, I thought long and hard whether I should NOT post this (more about that later) but I decided that this is a useful and good news that most of you deserve to know, so let's get to the numbers first.

On Jun/26/2023, RI posted FY2022-23 balance sheet to 官報 or the Official Japan Gazette, a newspaper published by the National Printing Bureau to notify citizens all sorts of legal matters. This is not a new development or anything, it's been going on from the start of Ricoh-Pentax merger. Anyway, back to FY 2022-23.

Total assets: ~7.46B JPY as of March 2023 (Current Assets ~5.4B, Fixed ~2.06B, yes it's a small company today). That's ~1.7 billion JPY increase from the previous FY. Still smaller than pre-COVID March 2020 (~11B) but already larger than March 2021 (~5.85B) and March 2022.
Liabilities total: ~7.07B (Current ~6.56B, Fixed ~0.51B).
Shareholders' equity: ~0.39B.
Net profit: ~1.14 billion JPY (about 7.9 million USD) after three consecutive FYs of net loss.

I'll add that shareholders' equity bounced back into positive due to 1.14B profit after two consecutive FYs of negative (yes I've been REALLY concerned for two years).

RI has done countless things in the past while NOT making functional updates to DSLR nor GR for FY20222-23. At least some of these things worked, otherwise they couldn't have pulled this off. Things don't look rosy or anything, but this is the first good quantitative financial news about RI after so many years. They're in the process of morphing into something that is different from their pre-COVID selves, and in that process they're coming back financially, it seems to me. I don't know if this continues or not. We'll see.

OK, now that an important part is out, here's how I obtained this information (you can too) and why I haven't posted anything before. If you're not interested, just skip it as this will be long.

Despite popular belief/rumor in PF, RI would post its balance sheet to Official Japan Gazette in late June or very early July each year (they're legally bound to post it somewhere). Free online version of the Gazette is the most inconvenient source for me as they only keep it online for 90 days, you get each page as one separate pdf, each pdf is just a big image and therefore not searchable at all using letters (e.g. "リコーイメージング" or "Ricoh Imaging"), but I had/have to use that as there's no alternatives. If you live in Japan you can pay 2200 Yens per month for the access to search in the past issues (you'll send your application to one of their 48 branches) or go to large public libraries. Either way, it's mostly out of reach for me except when I go back to Japan. There are third parties who somehow build their own database off of the Gazette and publish for free, I don't know about the legality of that. Information on the Gazette is considered public domain but the Printing Bureau claims copyright to some of the digital contents, so e.g. using a screenshot beyond the personal purpose might be problematic. In addition, if you subscribe to the Gazette's search service you'll consent to the TOS that explicitly prohibits you from using the data and graphics beyond the personal use. Third parties might be buying paper copies to scan in and use OCR to automate the information extraction, which I guess is legal.

That's why I made it a habit to check the free online version of the Gazette everyday in late June. I'll save your time to do what I did, here's the page for RI's FY2022-23 data (top left is RI, no easy auto-translation because it's just a big image and no real character information):
Jun/26/2023 issue, "Extras" section, page 80.

Anyway, I promised myself that I won't post anything about RI's balance sheets unless there is an obviously good news. It would be vulgar and irresponsible of me if I talk about "bad" finances of a company when in reality I have zero understanding of how to read nuances of balance sheet of any company, let alone a 100% subsidiary of a bigger corporation. And anyway how RI is doing in general could be guesstimated from the investor relation events of Ricoh Co. Ltd. (the mothership), so writing "RI itself made a loss" wouldn't have helped anybody except haters and masochists . And there hasn't been any "obviously good" year before. So I just sat on the knowledge.

This past FY was different. Making a net profit is always good. Total assets springing back toward pre-COVID level (not quite, but they're already bigger than Mar/2021) is great. Shareholders' equity getting back to positive is huge (at least for me). Should I post it? I mean, it seems to pass my own "obviously good" criterion. Will this somehow make a neutral person to stop buying Pentax products? Like, I don't know, maybe the person is shocked that RI is so small and avoid it based on that? Not impossible, but I decided that I shouldn't be worrying about each and every corner case. If you're searching for negative materials in this news, this is not the only source for you, and this is not the worst one either. In other words, you're not affected by this news.

OTOH this will give everybody a glimpse that RI's actions are maybe, sort of, actually working. There's no denying that whatever they did made money for them. So, for those of you who can see positive things as positive, you deserve to hear this news, thus this post.

BTW I'm still sticking to "no post unless obviously good" thing concerning this subject. If you go for third parties (to find out the past data), that's your choice not mine, please don't post about that in this thread. Thanks for reading!

The first camera is meant to be a compact with a fixed lens, according to the earlier rumors...

That said, I hope it has a decent aperture and shutter range with full control over both... especially if the user can intervene :)

Firmware 2.30 for K-1 and K-1 II adds "Gold" Custom Image

Makes sense. With the Gold setting I would have liked a "strength" or "opacity" setting. Gold currently allows for the following on my K-1

- Saturation
- Hue
- High/Low key
- Contrast
- Sharpness

There's not really a way of reducing the strength of the effect only adjusting aspects of it. Saying this my camera is usually on Natural and I don't use the custom image functions so I'm no expert

Hi everyone. I have owned several Pentax cameras over the years. I sold my last one, a K3, about 5 years ago. Always loved Pentax IQ, but found some frustrations with autofocus and switched to mirrorless. Currently shoot an OM1 with 4 lenses, from (in 35mm terms) 16mm to 800mm. It is a more than adequate set up for me. However I am very drawn to the new K3 iii Monochrome. Have always loved B&W photography, and would love to get back to it. I would plan to start with the 16-50 f2.8 to relearn the art. Hope to be here for a long stay!

Ned Bunnell has posted high ISO samples to his album, from 51200 up to 204,800. Absolutely usable images at all of them. Impressive performance!

According to the information I have learned, most of the people who actually place orders are not PENTAX users. PENTAX users are interested in a lot, but most of them think it is too expensive.

Clubhouse Visit & Meeting TKO

I had the chance to visit the Pentax Clubhouse this week. First, a huge thanks to forum member JPT for the background, directions and times that they are open!

The highlights were:

--Trying a bunch of new lenses
--Picking up some clubhouse branded items
--Meeting and having a conversation with TKO!!

I had asked several of the clubhouse staff if there was any news on the film camera development. Initially the questions were met with "nothing new to say".

So, I went about trying several new lenses. The team at the clubhouse were very patient, and allowed me to take each of the lenses outside to see how they performed.

After doing that I was rather heads down looking through the bins of goodies for sale, when...

...to my utter and complete shock, TKO came out and was introduced to me!

I told him how excited I was about the idea of the film camera and asked him what if anything more he could please tell me about where they are at.

He basically reiterated what is in the video. But, he was very clear that this is not a "for sure" thing and that he and his team are very much still working on the ideas. He re-stated that a compact camera would be first, and that others (if it happens) would follow later.

I explained my long involvement with the Pentax brand expressing my support for having a new film camera. I asked that they please consider ensuring the camera has full manual capability, the rugged Pentax build (that has allowed the film era cameras to still be working) and please please please make sure it is K-mount. The last one drew a ton of laughs from him and the clubhouse team.

Also had the chance to tell him how I had heard about the video in the first place and showed him the Pentax Forums landing page on my phone. He said he'd heard of Pentax Forums, but it was his first time looking at it.

What's extraordinarily cool is that he's clearly as passionate about photography and this project in person as he appears in the video.

It was one heck of a visit to the Pentax Clubhouse!
