Leaf shutter vs Electronic shutter?

Partly true, the Pentax adapter has a shutter built in to it. Not sure if any 3rd party adapters do, in that case your restricted to the electronic shutter.

A spellchecker meltdown...

I stand not alone, I had mulitple partners in this Qrime, many of this Qmmunity. I wasn't Qrious when the Q first released. Maybe it was the Qazy price at release, maybe simply focused about upgrading to the K5 when it's price dropped. I started reading and seeing all the Q8tive posts from the Qser Qontinuum and started gaining a little Qmentum towards this Quriously small Qamera. But the price was making me Qezy. Then came the Qews that the Qte'n was to be released soon and the Q prices tanked, and new Qware with great features. I ordered the white Q 01/02 kit and became a Qser (damn Qool-aid). Four price adjustments later I was a Qlated Qser. Soon after aQmulation started: K2Q adapter, the 06 zoom and a c-mount 68-412mm f1.9 (that's Qview, 12.5-75mm actualy), batteries, caps, case, Qfinder, Qpod, etc... Then the GroupOn Qenzy and I became a Qnfused dual Qser, I must have been Qazy to buy another Q (damn QBA).

It was a black body and in time the wife- she noticed. She.. had no Qriousity at all, said I was Qazy. At least I didn't put it on a Qedit Qard I Qried! Still, She didn't Qare that my shoulders didn't hurt Qarrying this minusQel kit, she didn't believe that I was hoping she'd drink the Qool-aid take her pick to become a Qser and take her place in the Qontinuum. She'd had nothing to do with any of my exQuses and... I promptly became a Qasterated Qser. So now no matter how inQitive my idea, or how Q8tive my image, I no longer have the balls err.. Qage to post them for the Qontinuum. I must find a Qurious Qbert and recruit him/her into the Qontinuum as a Qlated Qser (Qpid where are you!!). Only then can I become Qsolo again, and make Qmends with the Qanky wife.

...and the 03FE should be here tomorrow... Qrap!

Here ya go, it's really pretty simple. I spent more time watching how the lens works to make sure a shim could be used safely, than making the shim. And umm.. in my defense, I screwed up a little today. Left (part of) my Q kit sitting on my desk, as I forgot the wife had a contractor coming over to blow some insulation into the attic. So, after I post these quick and literally dirty shots:o, I'm off to do A LOT of clean up.. Didn't notice they blow that much dust around until I took these. Access to the attic is in my office/computer room...

This is the shim obviously removed from the lens. As you might be able to make out, I cut it from the edge of the page protector, leaving the welded seem intact.

Here it's half installed

This is pretty much fully installed. You can see it pretty well because the flash was used. Normally it would go un-noticed.

If you should need to remove it, a sewing needle(pin) can be used to lift the edge of it.

If you plan to make one, my advice would be to leave a couple times wider than the ring so you can remove it easy. My taste for the desired resistance will likely to be different than anyone else's. You could alter the resistance by making it longer or shorter, not to mention your choice of material to use may be a different thickness to start with. I choose the page protector because it was on hand and durable. Using something made from paper is probably a bad idea.

06 lens ?

I've had mine about 3 weeks, even though I pre-ordered. Had issues with the 1st, severe electrical failure. The replacement has been working fine, and it's a great lens for the Q. I wish it shared the build quality of the 02 zoom as far as the barrel construction goes. I really don't like the flex in the focus ring, feels cheap. I shimmed mine with a couple strips from a plastic page protector, and it's much better. Doesn't flex anymore and has just a touch more resistance during MF than the 02. Shimming also fixed my second complaint about it, If you use the MF (2X/4X) feature on the Q you'll notice that while zooming it will jump into the magnified MF assist view. Even if your being extra careful not to touch the focus ring, any damping of the focus ring just isn't there and turning the zoom ring will at times cause it to move just enough to trip the MF assist. The shim isn't a prefect solution, but it's at least removable and doesn't require taking the lens apart. I really don't think it would have cost that much for Pentax to build that part of the lens the right way.

Over-all I'm happy with it, and you can't beat it's size for what it is :)

edit: Red Text are 24Nov updates

Results from some testing today.

Parameters, Camera was setup in AV mode, SR Off, Power Save off, Shut Down Off, AWB, Natural Custom image, No SD card, everything else was off or at the minimum allowed setting. Room temp 67.7d(f). Camera was configured this way because I was testing the batteries, not the camera. Except the SD card, forgot to bring one but it wasn't needed anyway.

Charge Time test, battery was depleted in camera and then placed right on charger with no recovery time allowed.

Aftermarket 1- 38m 42s (charge #2 38m 12s), Voltage after charge 4.12vdc, stabilized at 4.06vdc
Aftermarket 2- 1h 19m 10s (charge #2 1h 16m 54s), Voltage after charge 4.15vdc, stabilized at 4.09vdc
Pentax OEM- 1h 41m 46s (charge #2 1h 42m 24s), Voltage after charge 4.17vdc, stabilized at 4.15vdc

Things are looking bad already.

Run time test. Camera aimed at the same target in each test and timed start to depleted message.

Aftermarket 1- 18m
Aftermarket 2- 44m
Pentax OEM- 2h 13m (ran twice to validate the extreme difference, 2nd run was 2h 9m)

I did one more test, same settings except this time with SR on mode 2 (full time). I put a water bottle on the desk, then set 300mm tripod shoe on top of the bottle, and hand held the camera (imagine an 8in monopod with long glass). An effort to keep SR actively working. This test included 1 more power on cycle after the first depleted message to insure the battery was dead.

Aftermarket 1- 4m 7s :lol::lol::fedup:
Aftermarket 2- 28m 29s
Pentax OEM- Based on the aftermarket 2 test I choose not to do this one. I didn't want to work the SR system for what should be over an hour straight.

Clearly Aftermarket 1 is a bad battery. I don't know if Aftermarket 2 is actually bad, or just a flat out lie in labeled rating. I don't have a 2nd OEM battery (yet) to validate the tests for that battery, but I plan to re-validate the run time test. It scored a lot higher for only 20m longer charge time, ran out of time today.

I think I've shown that camera and the charger are ok. What makes me mad is that I didn't buy $3 aftermarket to avoid all this. These were priced at half the OEM battery, but they appear to be $3 batteries. Needless to say they will be getting a call tomorrow or Monday if closed weekends.

So there you have it, all those hours charging and draining batteries and not a single picture taken:( what a waste of a day. But. I got my answer.

Added so you don't have to search all the replies. They were purchased from bestbatt.com @$10 each. I'm sure there are good aftermarket batteries out there. Just be mindful of your source, I thought I was: but wasn't mindful enough it seems. These are nameless batteries imported from China with no manufacture info, pictures of them are a few posts down. But they don't mean much, the labels could change tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there are only a couple of companies that make these. Best of them become OEM, next best group becomes Named aftermarket, and all the sub-standard ones go to fleebay and websites like this one. Just like the sub-C racing packs, you had pushed, matched, retail pack and lastly sperate cells that were (20yrs ago) a crap shoot.

and the nice images keep rolling in! Nice work everyone.

So, yesterday I got my Pentax Q2K adapter. This morning we had frost, so I grabbed the Q/Adapter and DFA/WR 100mm macro and tried to get a few test shots at the minimum distance without the aid of a focus rail. It didn't take long to realize I'm not having a good camera day. The first two are at min distance, an hour or so apart if that tells you anything. Then after getting throughly fustrated and cold, I backed off a biit and manually focused. All 3 three are shot with the adapter aperture set at 2. The DFA 100mm isn't at it's best wide open and the Q isn't at it's best closed down alot (as we know), so with this lens you kinda feel caught in the middle. Frost does look kinda cool (no pun intended) close up.

The 2nd one and this 3rd one the frost was just starting to melt a little.

Thanks Barondla, it came this afternoon applied all the updates. First impression, crap... I think I might like it  I think a small part of me was hoping I wouldn't for some reason. Start up time, focus speed, shutter lag all seem good to me, I read a few posts about these after I ordered it and they had me worried a bit. So far I'd consider all these non-issues. I am glad I went white (first white camera), the 3 shades go well together and adds a touch class to it -but's that's all personal opinion.

I told myself I'd post the first image from it, reguardless of how bad. It's with the 01 prime, starting to lose stuff to shoot in the yard as we reach the back-end of the season change. My luck we're having wind gusts to 30mph today, but at least the Tigers are going to the World Series Wahoo:D To bad I'm not a bigger baseball fan. ..

I'm having major color management issues (not Q related, K5 also since I installed lightroom 4.2 along side PSE9). This is all lightroom (which I'm new to), if run the Edit In then choose PSE9 from within LR, when I save it as a jpeg (from PSE9) it's all washed out even with it set sRGB. Anyway, here it is, full frame with a little post work as it was shot raw.

Wow.. Really? Thank-You! I feel so much better now knowing the lens I sent back that was $880 wasn't worth that much, Will now cost me $1400 to try a another copy should I choose. I'm happy for you. Must be nice being raised sucking on a gold tit and could careless about value, most of us of born into bronze or less. That doesn't make us cheap asses, all I expect is value for the money. If the value isn't there at $880, how is it going to be there at $1400!? Mind you this lens was around $600 at one point. Nothing about the lens changed, and yet they ask $800 more for it. If being Value/Quality driven is being a Penny Pincher, then sign me up. I'm the biggest frigging penny pincher you'll ever meet.

Trust me I'm wide awake.

K-30 vs d5100

The problem is that price premium gets out of hand fast. The DA*300mm as an example. Nikkor doesn't have a true match for it (that I could find), their 300mm f4 lens isn't a VR or WR lens and it's about $300 more than the DA*(new). To get a VR 300mm you'd be forced (in the Nikkor line) to go with the 300mm f2.8 VRII, which is $5700... So now your forced to sacrifice SR&WR and pay more, or sacrifice about $4600 for VR.

Not bashing you, just pointing out that people really need to look at what they want system wise, then see which is affordable. It's nice to dream about a system, but you can't mount a dream if a (whichever) system is out of reach.
