and now, back to our regularly-scheduled speculation-fest.

Or 23, then it would be prime, wide (on K-1), and ~35mm equiv on K-new.... Win win win.

I'm not sure why you responded to my post with this - I wasn't complaining about planned obsolescence nor waxing nostalgic.

Generating FOMO is a big part of marketing, and it seems that the higher the level of technology in the product, the better it works.
When was the last time you upgraded your hammer? Mine still works fine and I have no desire to upgrade it. The same is true for my photography gear - my skills as an amateur photographer are certainly overmatched by the quality of my gear. But that doesn't change the appeal of new gear. That new camera or lens might be the one to take my photography to the next level, or so the marketers would have me believe.
(These comments don't apply to professional photographers for whom better gear can actually improve their productivity.)

The sensor (and ibis) are great. I was referring to the `form-over-function' design of the outer shell. I also feel compelled to add that until Pentax improves the contrast-detect AF (hardware and algorithms) in their cameras, their DSLRs will not be very useful MILCs.
(Perhaps some of this will be addressed in the K-new :))

Mirrorless cameras have had two clear selling points - smaller size and weight and the wysiwyg aspect of the EVF/back screen. While the small size thing is giving way to bigger and heavier cameras in some cases, the EVF technology has only improved. Moreover, the disadvantage of slow focusing contrast-detect systems is mostly a thing of the past, at least with the major mirrorless contenders.
I think that Pentax can get a foot in the mirrorless door with a hybrid viewfinder and (significantly) better contrast-detect (or even hybrid) `live view' focusing. Pentax cameras are already on the small size (though heavy) so there would be no need to introduce a new lens mount. They could do this in one, two or all of APSC, FF and MF.
I would buy one.

I've even managed a little out of focus blur (real, not a.i. manufactured) with the 50mm equivalent lens on the iPhone 11pro.

Aren't they all? And not always in a good way... ;) ---------- Post added 12-18-19 at 05:17 PM ---------- Our cats like to lie on me in the evening... All of them at once.
Comment: this was taken with the 50mm equiv. lens on the iPhone 11, from very close to the closest cat, so the `bokeh' is real (not a.i. generated). |

I agree. What I was thinking (but did not write) is that they focused on the form (by hiring Marc Newson) and almost not at all on functionality. As for the price... I bought mine when they were selling for about $300. The sensor is still excellent, so the photo quality with a good lens is too.

If I recall correctly (always a questionable assumption), the most valid criticism of the K-01 was the fact that
Pentax let an industrial designer (Marc Newson) with no notable photography cred design the camera.
It is fun to use under the right conditions (I have one), but it does not have great photographic haptics.

I have a similar problem in reverse - I have to keep reminding myself that I have more than enough camera gear for my needs (and skill level), and I don't
need that very attractively priced x-t30+18-55 combo (with 35 f/2, for good measure).

The 20mm is a great all-purpose lens - great for capturing an entire scene, great for portraits close up and great for everything in between.
