Do DSLRs need periodic CLA

In ancient times 35 mm cameras needed a periodic CLA to keep the speeds and mechanical parts in top condition. Do speeds in a DSLR stay accurate indefinitely, and do the fewer moving parts in the DSLR not require lubrication? Should we keep using a DSLR till it breaks down and then toss it? What say ye learned Pentaxions?

Focus problems DA 18-135

I had a similar problem with my DA 18-35. I bought it new and used it only lightly since it was used mainly while I went on vacation. One day it developed a problem in which it would not focus in auto or manual mode when used on my K70. I tried my DA 12-24 on the K70 and it worked perfectly, so I knew the lens was the issue. I posted my problem in these Forums on 8/31/20 and received advice from a number of respondents but I could not fix the problem. I sent the lens to Eric and he returned it saying that he could not get parts from Ricoh. One of the Forum respondents offered to buy the lens if it was cheap enough, and he would try to fix it himself. I sold it to him for $20 but I never heard if he fixed or not. I liked the lens a lot so I bought a used one to replace it. As others have mentioned, I believe there are a few lemons in the DA18-135 stable and you and I found them. Good luck in your quest to fix the problem.

Hi Richard, those are really great photos from the 12-24 mm Pentax lens. I bought mine new and am always pleased with its performance. It is a big lens with a huge lens hood. I wanted to use it as an ankle bracelet but it keeps falling off. I hope that others will "discover" this great Pentax lens and add it to their collection.

I have a Pentax DA 12-24 mm zoom which I use infrequently. But it is sharp and I like it a lot. It also has very good reviews in this Forum. However, I'm always surprised that it seems to be a forgotten lens. It never seems to be mentioned, not even in this thread. Is there a general consensus that this lens is not worthy of consideration?

Faulty Menu switch on K100D

Hi Photogem, your solution to my Menu button malfunction is probably correct but I would be afraid to attempt disassembling my camera. I would definitely end up with a basket case. It's not a job for the faint of heart. Right now, the camera is functioning normally and I'll keep my fingers crossed in the hope it will stay that way. Thanks for your advice though.

Thanks Kypfer for your advice. I will definitely keep my batteries well charged and use the K100D periodically. Pentaxes seem to keep working if they are used frequently.

Faulty Menu switch on K100D

The batteries were Eneloops which were fully charged according to the camera display. By clicking the Menu button repeatedly, the display gradually became stable and did not shut itself off. So I don't think the batteries were the problem. The camera now seems to work perfectly.

---------- Post added 11-23-21 at 04:34 PM ----------

The K100D has never been serviced. It was the K50 and K70 that had the solenoids replaced, I don't think any cables in the K100D were loosened during the long period in storage. I think that clicking the Menu button on and off must have revived something in the circuitry, but I don't know what. I guess I will periodically pull out my Pentax bodies and get them to do a few calisthenics in order to keep them fit.

Faulty Menu switch on K100D

I pulled out my K100D from hibernation the other day to play with it. I seldom use it since I upgraded through a Kx, a K50, and my current K70. I've replaced the solenoids for the last two bodies, due to the aperture block problem, and now have four great cameras to use at will. That's what I thought till recently. When I pressed the Menu switch on the K100D, the screen on the back of the camera lit up and then almost immediately shut off. During repeatedly switching on and off, the screen finally remained lit and I was able to select from the menu. Occasionally, however, the screen would still disappear and I would have to switch it on again.

I'm wondering why this happens, and why repeated switching seems to gradually fix the problem. Does the button switch have metal contacts that could be slightly corroded during months/years of inactivity and then become "cleaned" after repeated switching? Or is this an electrical problem that is not due to corroding metal contacts? Can anyone enlighten me?

Is fine tuning the focus of my lenses necessary?

I think the majority of the Pentaxians who responded to my post must be pros or advanced photographers who demand the very best from their lenses and cameras. Most photographers like myself are satisfied with the quality of their shots without wanting to carry out the complex procedures of fine focusing using charts, tape measures and bottle surfaces to do the necessary adjustments. Jatrax said above that to fine tune his lenses it takes at least half an hour to to fine tune. In the K50 manual the fine tuning procedure seems to be a quick one that one can used. However, the manual states that one should "Be sure to use fine adjustment only when necessary. Care should be taken as adjusting the auto focus may make it difficult to capture images with the appropriate focus" whatever that means. I did attempt to follow the quick Pentax procedure. with my K50 and a Pentax 18-135 mm lens and saw no sharpening of the image, but maybe I didn't carry out the procedure correctly. In any case, the warning given in the manual was enough to discourage me from fiddling with fine adjustment. I think I'll forget this adjustment since, as I said above, I'm basically happy with the sharpness of my lenses for the type of general photography that I do. Nevertheless, the advice given by the responders was an eye opener and I now believe that fine adjustment is not for the faint hearted, like me. Thanks for all your comments.

I agree. If you opened the bottle beforehand you probably wouldn't be able to see straight enough to do the fine adjustment.

From your many comments in these Forums I believe you should not be using the Av setting. Av stands for Average Photographer". You belong in the M category. Don't you agree?

Yes, I'm happy with my photos but maybe I could even happier if I found that fine adjustments made them even sharper. :)

I normally use Pentax lenses on my K50 and K70 and note from the user manuals that it is possible to apply "Fine Adjustments" to my cameras to get even sharper images. I have never bothered to use the complicated procedures to correct for front and back focussing since my images seem quite satisfactory for my type of photography. The fine adjustment procedure on the Pentaxes seems straight forward but II want to ask if any of you experienced Pentaxians bother to fine adjust the focus on your cameras. Is it worth the trouble for a "general photographer" like me? Of course I could give it a try but any comments would be welcome.

Problem with Pentax 300 mm, M* F4 lens

AHHA!! You have solved my problem. I just set my K50 to a fixed ISO and lo and behold I can now adjust the shutter speed. I would never have guessed that this was the solution. I was beginning to think that the problem was not fixable and that I would just have to use the lens on my K70. However, it's nice to have two camera bodies in use, instead of switching lenses all the time. I sometimes use the 300 mm lens to photograph the moon and I find that the speed adjustment feature gets me quickly to the best exposure for a very bright small image like the moon.

Thanks to all respondents to my post, you've been a great help.

Hi. When I set my K50 to M, the top left screen shows Av. When I set my K70 to M the screen shows M. Does this give you a clue as to what the problem is?

Also, I have the camera set to auto ISO but I still can't manually change the shutter speed. I'm confused.

I did use the M setting on the K70 and I can alter the shutter speed on my K70. I was wondering why the M setting on my K50 did not allow me to alter the speed. I would expect that both cameras should behave similarly

---------- Post added 09-24-21 at 09:38 AM ----------

I did have the aperture ring enabled. I always leave the camera at this setting. However, I still can't get the K50 to allow speed adjustement when the camera is set to M.

I need help to determine if I have a problem with this lens. When used with my K70, I am able to change the shutter speed using the front knurled wheel when the top dial is set to M. Any other setting such as T, TAV, or AV does not allow the speed to be changed. However, on my K50 I cannot change the speed when using any of the M, T, TAV, or AV settings. Why the M setting only works on the K70 puzzles me. To check to see if the problem is specific to the 300 mm lens I ran tests on my Pentax DA 18-135 lens and found that both cameras behaved similarly and the speed could be changed as long as the top dial was set to M. All other settings did not work. I might add that the cameras were always set to manual focus, but I don't think this causes the problem, if indeed it is a problem.

I'm sure you're right. I often hear people talk about the SMC coatings on Pentax lenses and I believe they refer to the warmth they give. Since I usually use Pentax lenses it explains why I like images I get. If a camera adds to this richness you get an extra benefit.

I find that the photos I've taken over many decades with Pentax cameras are very rich in color, which I like. Sometimes when I use a non-Pentax lens on a Pentax the lack of rich colors is immediately noticeable. Is this feature a result of Pentax lens coatings or because of the rendering of the image by Pentax software? Do other brands of DSLRs produce similar rich colors? What say ye learned Pentaxians?

I think this makes sense. The extreme curvature of the front lens element makes it act like a prism which disperses the white light into its component colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). Raindrops in the sky have the same effect and act like mini prisms to break up sunlight to form rainbows.

I'm with you Lesmore. I prefer the auto-focus on my lenses since it is quicker for me to focus compared with manual. However, as I said in my original comment, a modern auto-focus lens may be many times more expensive than a vintage manual one which may be optically as good. If one is willing to go manual and buy a vintage lens, he or she could save a ton of money.

NIce sharp photo. I'm sure the high shutter speed made a positive contribution. I can see a little graininess but that doesn't have a negative effect. In fact it make the shot more interesting.
