Hi Ryan, general stuff, but a lot of indoor, low-light stuff which is why I like the mark II for its rumored improved low light af performance. I like the idea of the smaller camera for portability, but the pentax ticks a lot of other boxes, such as sensor performance and the ability to shoot in dng. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply, and thanks for sharing your experience with the em5 with me. I actually like the small size of the em5 for portability, but your not the first person I've heard say that the ergos were greatly improved with the addition of the grip.
I've only briefly handled the oly so I can't really form an opinion at this point. What did you replace the em5 with? One concern is that there isn't a lot of info on the af performance on the mark II, but it's said to have better low light performance than it's predessor. The oly has proven too have a pretty good/fast af.
Thanks again for the advice.

Thanks for the link. Someone posted a video in that thread, apparently he has the k5 and the k5IIs, he said to go with the s as moire will show up in 1/2 % of the shots unless all you shoot is fabrics. I do like the idea of more detail.

Gooseta, is moire something that can be fixed in post processing by a novice? I read that the IIs might not be the best choice for overall/general photography due to the lack of a/a filter. Also, how do you find the jpeg engine? Oly is legendary for it's jpeg output. Thanks again for the advice.

Hi gooseta, i really like the idea of sharper images with more detail, but I'm a bit concerned about moire. Do you think this will be an issue with the s?

Hi gooseta, i was under the impression that the oly had good low light af? To be honest with you, there is no technical reason I don't like the k01, but it honestly looks like a toy compared to the other options.

Hey everyone, thanks for the informative replies, this camera would be replacing my ageing eos 10d, which has been an awesome camera. The logical upgrade would be the 60 d - but it's not a very compelling camera when compared to the competition. I only have one canon lens, a tamron 28-75 which is quite nice, actually, but I'm not overly invested in canon, which has me seriously considering alternatives.
As far as the k5 goes, I'm sure it's a great camera, but I'm after the better low light af of the mark II. This is the kit I was considering: Pentax K-5 II Digital SLR Camera with SMC DA 18-55mm 12027 B&H
Here's the omd kit: Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera V204045BU000
This seems like a very good deal for the k5, what do you think? The IIs also seems really intriguing, but I'm not sure if moire will be an issue.
I've read a bit about qc issues with pentax lenses, and them being manufactured in vietnam? Is this something to be concerned about?
This would be a homecoming of sorts as my first slr was a pentax, which I still have - and although it's seen better days, it still works, for the most part.
Thanks again for the advice.

Hey everyone, I'm a newbie here, and am here seeking your wisdom/advice. I was set to pull the trigger on an oly omd, but kept reading about the k5 ii, and how it is the best value in a dslr. Now I'm re-thinking my decision to go with the omd, it appears the only thing I'm gaining with the oly, is a smaller size and possibly better/faster af? Although, from what I can gather on the net, the mark II has greatly improved low light af.
With the kit lens, they are identical in price, which really plays in favor of the pentax. So, I guess it all comes down to lens selection/cost, and other things such as build quality, and pentax after sale support, should I ever need it.
Something I really like about the k5 is the ability to shoot in dng, which makes post processing a bit easier as my old copy of photoshop doesn't recognize many of the new cameras and it's been a nightmare to update it.
I sure would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

I kind of noticed the same thing, it all starts to fall apart above 1600 (g3), but the g3 is better (to my untrained eyes) under 1600. Still, nothing to complain about with any of the camera's mentioned here.

I've been looking for a camera to replace my aging eos 10d. After lots of reading, I narrowed it down to the nex series, the new k01, and then the omd/em5.
I'd have preferred it had the sony sensor, but oly has always had a knack for squeezing the best out of whatever sensors it uses. Excellent jpeg quality means less post processing (raw). I am buying a camera to take pictures NOW, not at some time in the future when/if lenses are available, so I ruled out the sony.
I really like the k01, but to be honest, the oly presents the complete package including the evf, as well as an established lens base. Pre-ordered the em5/12-50 kit as soon as it became available. Still anxiously awaiting the reviews of the k-01, as it looks like an outstanding package.

I'm new here, actually seeked this forum out to learn more about this camera. I'm looking to upgrade from me ole EOS 10d, and since I only have 1 lens, I'm not tied to Canon. Was thinking about the Oly EP3, maybe the new O-MD - After seeing the K-01, added that to the list.
The only negative's that I can see are that it's not really much smaller than a slr, and no EVF, although that may happen in the future. I'm not keen on the design/looks, but in the end, I'm more concerned with image quality than camera style. Judging from the sensor/lens selection, image quality should be outstanding.
I'm still hung up on the size thing, though.. The main reason I'm considering straying from canon is the dslr draws too much attention...I'd rather have something a bit less conspicuous...Dunno if the k-01 will accomplish this...still, very excited to see/handle one in the flesh.
