K1 pixel shift processing

Blue cast is a known bug in LR and will be fixed in a future release. It ONLY happens when using .DNG format. If you switch to .PEF, there is no blue cast issue. At least that is what I have read online :)

After reading the updated article on PS at dpreview, Adobe's response on PS was that there implementation was "final" implying they would not implement MC functionality. That said, I think Olympus's approach to this problem is better as they provided a LR plug-in to process there PS RAW files. That said, I think we should get the word out to Ricoh to develop such a plug-in!!

As I shoot primarily landscapes and do not prefer swapping primes in the field, I would love a couple compact F4 zooms. Just finished a weekend rental with the new DFA 24-70 and there is no way I am lugging that thing on long hikes. A compact F4 equivalent on the other hand, sign me up!! Plus, landscapes often have less need for fast lenses...

Pixel Shift: bigger files? B&W results?

This line should read Pixel Shift MC (motion control) as ACR does, indeed, support pixel shift files with no movement. Also, Ricoh would need to provide the motion correction algorithm and/or actual source code to Adobe and then it would be Adobe's job to incorporate that into ACR. Like you say, we have no way of knowing what, if any, collaboration was done between Pentax and Adobe. From what I have read on Adobe forums, their response is that motion correction is not supported at this time with no mention on whether they will include it in the future.

If we can learn anything from Adobe's support of X-Trans, we should not hold our breath...

I heard a temporary work-around for the blue-shift problem is to shoot in PEF then import into LR. Adobe has the blue-shift issue as a bug and will fix in a future release of LR.

I heard someone else notice this. Is this problem unique to K-1 PS images? Because I never heard of this issue on K-3 II pixel shift images.

Best Wide Angle Lens for Pixel Shift

I am contemplating the K-1 for purchase and am renting one in a couple weeks. I am looking for an ideal wide angle lens for the primary purpose of shooting landscapes in pixel shift mode. It would have to be able to use filters with no special extras. I am looking at starting with a budget wide angle and eventually save for a more premium lens.

For pixel shift, the sharper lenses appear to yield the best results.

That said, I did a bit of research and read through the other wide-angle thread. The DA 35 2.8 Macro lens would appear to be an ideal candidate for a budget option. From what I have read, on the K-1 and at some apertures, you will have corner issues. I am hoping someone weighs in that has done some testing. For landscapes, my bread and butter apertures are F8-F16. Other budget options, maybe the Samyang 16 or 24?

For non-budget options, perhaps the Sigma 35 Art lens (though heavy), FA 31 limited, or the upcoming 15-30?

Did you crank up the sharpening amount in LR after you imported the PS Raw? An amount of between 100-150 is what is needed to bring out the pixel shift effect. At least that is how it works on the K-3 II...

Keep in mind, when you import a Pentax Pixel-Shifted RAW image into Lightroom, you need to crank up the sharpening amount to very high levels. This adjusts the amount of the pixel-shift blending... If you do not adjust this, it will appear identical to a non-Pixel Shifted version. Just an FYI.

Yes, that is also where I found the lattice artifacts in my waterfall shots, right on the edge between the moving water and static rocks. Hard to correct with cloning and such, easiest method would be to use layers with a non-PS shot. Perhaps the new algorithm in the K-1 will improve on this?

I have been reading up and some of Olympus's new MILCs have both Focus Stacking (in-camera) as well as Focus Bracketing options which appear very interesting. In addition, their implementation of pixel shifting (8 shots shifted by 1/2 pixel vs 4 shots shifted by 1) seemed to yield better results than the K-3 II. The drawback being the extra time needed for 8 shots vs 4. This was from a imaging-resource test here :

Yes, sounds like an issue with PDCU. I wonder if the issue is just constrained to long exposures w/PS and motion? For my waterfall shots, it was better at removing artifacts than the in-camera engine. My exposure times were fairly short though. LR appeared to do no artifact correction which does not surprise me at all.

I have not tried using PEFs in PDCU. All my files are DNG. I tried turning off PS and saving to TIFF and it works fine without crashing. Just an FYI.

I shot both RAW and JPG and only posted the JPGs for reference (no modifications).

I have not, my plan was just to blend a Non-PS with PS image in the artifact areas using photoshop.

Thanks for the tip, I had not considered it.

That would be perfect, just wish my budget allowed for that!

Speaking of Focus tacking, I see in the latest Olys they are implementing a Focus Bracketing and Focus Stacking (in camera) feature which sounds great. Do you think Pentax will ever introduce such a feature?

Great tip on turning off PS then saving a copy for blending. I will try that out soon! And I agree that your workflow starting with PDCU then exporting to TIFF and work in LR/PS is probably best at this point. And a must if there is any motion,

As for buying a K-3 II, it is lacking one must have feature for me and this is an articulating screen! I have been spoiled shooting Fuji for the last couple of years and could not live without one. I think I am going to give serious consideration to the K-1 though lens cost and increased weight are big concerns for me. Another possibility is waiting for the next gen flagship Pentax APS-C and hoping it as a flippy screen. I am also gonna consider the upcoming Fuji X-T2 and maybe evaluate the next gen Olympus EM-1 (Mk 2) though I have my reservations on its smaller sensor. What prompted me to consider the Oly is a test at imaging resource. They compare the pixel shift mode in there latest Pen-F to not only the K3 II but also the Canon 5DS R. The results were rather surprising to me and would be interested in what you thought of that test.

Here are 100% crops of bark. This test is just to show the 3 different pixel shift processing (left to right : 1-In Camera, 2-PDCU to merge then finished up in Lightroom, 3-All Lightroom). I used settings in PDCU and LR that would minimize artefacts. In PDCU's case, using FS slider to stop before oversharpened. In Lightroom's case, with this image, it took max sharpening of 150 and looked acceptable to me. In fact, in this test, the Lightroom version shows the most detail. They are all pretty close though.

That is also what I found testing out this feature recently. That said, do we have a feeling whether the K1 motion correction is an "improved" version of the K-3 II one? Or is it the same?

I am finding PDCU a bit harder to work with if I try and fully post-process an image compared to LR (I mess up the tonality). I find it much easier to just use PDCU to do the pixel shift combining via the FS slider. Also, I have been changing the image tone mode from my in-camera setting of Landscape (way too warm) to Natural. I then do all other adjustments in LR. It works pretty well. On my second test shot, my attempts in PDCU and LR are getting much closer. The biggest difference I find is that PDCU's pixel shift fine sharpening is a bit harsher and digital looking if pushed too far. If you push LR's pixel shift sharpening too far, you get what I would call a textured grain (noise) in some areas. The second shot I processed, I was able to crank up the LR sharpening to 150 with minimal grain but it brought out a great deal of detail. I will post some 100% crops of it. I am hopeful because it means I might be able to use LR for my entire workflow. Though I wish they took a page out of Fuji / Adobe (collaboration) book and included the Image Tone Modes in LR.
