That's from the Pentax camera actually taking the shot. The GXR A16 in the pic is just the object being photographed as an example of how lighting affects a subject.

PS. It's at the 18 minute mark in the video to save time viewing the whole thing.

A remote LCD is pretty much a standard feature with all new cameras now with WiFi and a phone app.

I just did a rough overlay of a K-3 with the Pentax logo on the front of the prism housing the same dimension as in the teaser image. So it appears this new FF model is larger than the K-3.

8. Whatever will be. WIll be.

#5 raises more questions than it answers. It infers a redesigned mirrorless K-mount 'K-02'. Does this mean those supposed new lenses projecting into the camera body will eventuate? But does "from Ricoh" mean Ricoh-branded? So not a K-02, but a GXR successor, maybe M-mount? Maybe that supposed LX-D new 'A-mount' after all?

Actually, Apple's success was founded purely on geeks. The Apple I was just a DIY circuit board. The Apple ][ which made Apple rich (the first time) was also a geek's dream with expansion slots and programming and Apple ][ users had the top off and wires and cables coming out of their machines more than even the most avid PC hacker has the casing off their gaming towers.

What you're talking about is actually Steve Jobs' dream to make computers easy to use consumer devices as commonplace as TVs in every home - which actually almost led to Apple's destruction and ruination (the first time). And got Jobs fired from his own company due to the poor Macintosh sales.

The problem was the computer in those early days was tied to production rather than consumption. So Macs were successful selling only to those non-geeks using it to create stuff with it like graphics or desktop publishers etc. He eventually achieved his dream wth the G3 iMac (+ iTunes) in 1999 and the accompanying iPod, using music as the main 'consumer' driving force. It just wasn't possible without that consumer content, so his real achievement was actually getting the greedy and conservative music industry on board to start his revolution, not actually any piece of hardware Apple could make. And so on it all goes now with more consumer products like the iPhone and iPad etc, it's all driven now by content and consumption.

So now the tables are completely turned and the production (as opposed to consumer) computers are the ones not selling as well any more. The new Mac Pro due to be released next month is actually the first new piece of workstation hardware from Apple since 2007, and it's almost like they're just doing it for old time's sake. They'll even be making them in the USA like the Apple ][ used to be, as they don't envisage they'll be selling that many to be needing a large production line.

Ricoh-chez..

The Ricoh name replaces the Asahi name as the manufacturer of respected Pentax D/SLRs. So Pentax users should still remain Pentaxians.

I'd actually take that as a good sign that by announcing they are absorbing the company completely under their own umbrella now that Ricoh is officially committing themselves to it for the long haul. Perhaps before they were in a process of still assessing the viability of their acquisition as 'Pentax Ricoh' at arm's length until they decided one way or the other. Now they've announced what they've decided - they're going to keep the baby. ;)

Sorry, the question of colours made me assume the Q7.

Technically black and white aren't colours so the Q doesn't actually come in any variety at all. ;)

And thanks again, LeRolls! :)

Tabbakh, I'll do you one better and draw you a diagram. :D The single light source was natural sunlight through a window in an otherwise dark room just to camera left. You could replicate this setup with a strong flash side/backlight with some softer frontal diffuse fill light. The key I think was raising him level with the window so the light is coming from directly behind and to the left instead of from above if he was down on the floor. And then extremely heavy vignetting in post (Aperture) to exaggerate the chiascuro effect.

Ricoh announces company name change - no more Pentax Ricoh Imaging, just Ricoh.

People seem to be forgetting that Ricoh only purchased the Pentax brand and intellectual property (and accompanying staff and infrastructure) in regards to imaging products. Hoya continues to retain ownership of the Pentax brand for the more lucrative medical products.

In light of this sharing arrangement and Ricoh not actually owning the name Pentax outright, it never made sense for Ricoh to commit to naming the company itself Pentax for the long term. Just as it equally wouldn't make sense for Hoya to name their company Pentax now either.

But both corporations know the value of the Pentax name as a brand. That's why Hoya wanted to keep it and Ricoh wanted to buy it.

PS. And for all we know, this change now after a fixed time period may actually be a legal requirement of the original sale by Hoya, ie Ricoh can only use the name for products not entities.

Macro lenses for the Pentax Q

Multiply the SLR lens focal length x 5.8 to get the focal length on your Q, so a Canon 50mm will give you the equivalent of roughly a 300mm telephoto lens on your Q.

I thought I'd test out the Sigma 24mm F1.8 on the GXR this morning (via a K-mount adapter). Apart from its hefty size and weight on the GXR, I must say I'm mightily impressed and I'm wondering why I never tried it before - can't take close ups like this with my rangefinder lenses!

New Ricoh GR Officially Announced

I just can't fathom this constant comparison with the Fuji cameras. The Fuji X100s is twice the mass of the GR. It's a much bigger camera. One X100s weighs as much as two GRs. Why do so many people not seem to get this? Do you think they are actually similar in size/weight or something?

The only similarity between the small discrete pocketable GR and the twice-as-heavy much larger loud silver X100s on a neckstrap is they both have APSC sensors and a fixed prime lens.

Why stop at the larger X100s' OVF? Why not include a proper mirror and prism from yet even larger cameras as well while we're at it to rectify the GR's 'mistake'. ;)

This is a B&W JPG from straight from GRD III:

It's cropped about 50% to turn it from a full-body shot to a portrait, so from a JPG original the fine hair detail is not as sharp as I would like so it's one of those shots I wish I had shot RAW. But stll the JPG holds the dynamic range shadows under his chin for example quite well.

Compare it to this similar shot from the K-01 shot RAW and post processed B&W. The K-01 APSC sensor is the same as in the new GR so I'm really excited about that.

This is a colour JPG from the GRD III:

And a GRD III RAW image tweaked for a bit of sharpness and level adjustment and a vignette added:

K-01, a very misunderstood camera

It's not the camera which is polarizing, it's pictures of it.

The camera itself wins most people over who actually handle/buy/use one. The strong negativity I notice is most often from judging purely the pictures of it and not the camera itself.

And maybe Pentax's biggest mistake was simply forgetting it's not 1979 any more. I often think the K-01 would probably have fared much better in the pre-internet days where the only place to see one would probably be the first time you actually handled one in a store - and likely conclude how nice it actually looks and feels, and even more likely conclude that the cheap all-plastic EOS next to it on the counter is in fact the toy camera in comparison. Maybe that's what the Pentax marketing gurus thought by assuming that once people actually compared them in the hand it would justify the high initial price. Except most people made their strong negative judgements before any of that could even happen purely based on pics on the internet.

The term I like to use is DSLnR for 'non-Reflex' to keep as it sounding as much SLR-ish as possible because the K-01 uses existing SLR lenses, as opposed to NEX or other MILCs which use totally non-SLR lenses.

Pentax actually tried to sell that aspect of it with the hundreds of existing lenses availabe for it but they failed to differentiate it enough from the more compact MILCs which all the review sites kept comparing it to.

That's why I think inventing a whole new term like DSLnR would have helped them greatly to get across it was a whole new category of camera, not just another MILC:

Glue a Hoodman loupe to a K-01?
Posted By anthony mazzeri

It doesn't for me. From the right your shutter hand is blocking the light. From behind your head is blocking the light. From the left your other hand is blocking the light. Only at direct midday above you is there possibly a light issue if you want to shoot at high noon in harsh sunlight. Not my type of shot so never a problem for me but baseball cap should easily sort that out, or move your left hand up just like shielding your eyes.

I'm actually flummoxed by the whole point of using a K-01 with such a large and cumbersome hoodman permanently attached to it. Why not just get the more elegant inbuilt viewfinder solution of a K-30 instead?
