Poll: GR III wish list

The first and third iterations are the major sensor and lens upgrades, GRD I, GRD III, GR I, GR III, so I expect something interesting.

The GR I upgrade from the GRD IV was the doozy with the APSC sensor. So unless they do another doozy with full frame, the GR III upgrade will likely be a little more modest like the GRD III, so I'd say up the pixels to 24MP along with a slightly faster lens, maybe F2.4 or even F2.

I believe like much of their overall business the mainstay of Ricoh's digital camera business is actually industrial not consumer - their FA series of CCTV and security cameras and lenses etc and even stereo 'eyes' for factory robots. This commercial camera division is still a part of Ricoh corporate whereas the consumer cameras have been separated out into a subsidiary.

DPR Interview With Ricoh

Too true. They already have the excellent (equivalent) 28mm and 50mm macro and the 24-85 zoom plus leaf shutter technology and firmware from the GXR/GR so it's not a big leap at all to split them off into 3 distinct lenses and a new body for any new (APSC) MILC system. Add in Pentax's sensor stabilization which also already exists would allow them time instead to develop other additonal new lenses from scratch too.

Perhaps it's because the GR has become primarily a pocketable discreet camera for street shooters who won't go to the trouble of attaching a teleconverter on such a camera. But they would a wideangle when less discretion is required for interiors or landscapes.

As JPT mentioned, Ricoh used to offer a 40mm converter on the GRD I & II at first but didn't bother with the III & IV and now GR. Yet they've always offered a specific wideangle for every model, so maybe it's simply because one sold well while the other didn't so they just stopped making the one that didn't.

DPR Interview With Ricoh

I think it's still important to differentiate between Ricoh and Pentax when it comes to mirrorless, because Ricoh did indeed have a well-received mirrorless offering before the Pentax acquisition - the GXR Mount A12 which used the Leica M-mount. Which they have since abandoned... for what? They're certainly not been working on any Pentax models because there's not one iota of Ricoh DNA yet to be seen in any Pentax camera yet, not even a glimpse of Ricoh's excellent firmware.

The fact remains that the entire Ricoh team previously responsible for the ongoing GXR A12-28, A12-50, A-16, P10, S10, Mount A12, G700, GRD, CX and PX series before the Pentax acquisition have so far only come up with the single, solitary GR since. As good as this one camera is, they've gone from a rate of 5 complete cameras a year to just this one in four years so it does raise the question of what else have they been doing with their time these past several years? Obviously it must be some sort of ongoing 'project X' that's requiring all their efforts.

My prediction is a Ricoh MILC, likely a KAF bellows-mount.

That's from the Pentax camera actually taking the shot. The GXR A16 in the pic is just the object being photographed as an example of how lighting affects a subject.

PS. It's at the 18 minute mark in the video to save time viewing the whole thing.

Ricoh's typical 24 month release cycle means you can expect a GR II announcement some time around late March to mid April 2015 with actual shipping some weeks later.

Their inclination would probably be to make crop-mode automatic whenever such lenses which don't cover the required circle are attached, but they should include a menu override so you can still use any of these lenses in FF mode by switching SR off.

They indicate it's the green button but the Imaging Resource preview says it's actually the more rearward Wi-Fi button which automatically changes to a shutter button when the screen is faced forward.

Have you not read about the supposed K-mount 'bellows' concept?

If true, it means the FF will not be a conventional DSLR but a K-mount short-flange mirrorless with EVF and new lenses instead which can also natively mount all the long-flange K SLR lenses as well.

I call it the MIL-K. ;)

I've also noticed that if they aren't working on something they just come straight out and say so. It's when they're vague iwhen asked about future plans is when they are actually working on something so as not to give away any perceived advantage they may have over competitors.

For example their answer to a possible GR Zoom model:

Q: GR zoom lens is scheduled?
A: Some of the people who request from the fact that the product concept of GR also to be involved because it is not good idea. Specifically, at this time there are no plans.

Compare to their answer for a MILC system:

Q: APS-C size or full-size sensor for mirror-less camera Ricoh Imaging How did you do that?
A: I feel very high market potential. However, whether or not we are doing is different. I would like to level but not the level of research, but we still have.

There's that vague word 'research'.

Yes, I've noticed Nikon also uses words like 'studying' and 'researching' when asked about possible future models, even when the camera appears two months later.

There's much to expect this year compared to previous ones:

The GR 2 is due around Feb/Mar based on the usual two-year life cycle.

The K-3 is due a replacement soon too, as is ditto the MX-1 as well.

And they've already sneak-previewed those two FF lenses so they'll be on show again as well, which means questions about what camera body they fit on, so...

Edit - PS, the irony of Ricoh being next to the video area for professionals considering video's always been their weakest spot. May be a sign.

I'm a bit relieved actually. Another typical DSLR like this appeared to be isn't what they were talking about being unique to compete against Canikon.

I'm personally looking forward to the FF K-mount mirrorless 'bellows' design, which I still expect to see announced very soon before CP+!

Edit: could be a K-5 or K-7 - this is what I mean about using an existing model image to do a quick fake.

Okay, I'm curious to hear where he got it from originally.

I believed it because it scales to a full frame DSLR rather than just somebody using an existing APSC camera image as the backdrop if they were doing a quick fake. Thought and effort has actually gone into it.

Yep, the Pentax logo on the 645 is completely different. This is definitely a more typical DSLR instead.

This new teaser/reveal also having a similar look and feel to their previous successful Z one but with a new different 'join the dots' idea actually tells me it is from the same marketing/PR people and is genuine.

---------- Post added 2014-12-27 at 09:03 PM ----------

CP+ is 12-15 Feb. Like other makers with big announcements at previous shows they will be wanting to launch it BEFORE the show opens to hog all the pre-show publicity and press and build anticipation to come and see it, so I'd say in about four weeks or so by end of January.

So after all these years, just a month or less now.

And if I use the dot/line as a guide to match the sensor/mirror on the D750, the Pentax FF prism logo is slightly higher so the camera is probably between D750 and D800 in size.
