Shooting at 28mm - which lens to choose

I'm with you on this. Also, more often than not, the chosen composition may not be all that far off to the side from where focus was established. And not all lenses will have a field-curvature issue, even true of some wide-to-long zoom lenses. For example, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, otherwise quite good, was shown in OpticaLimits testing to have a very large field-curvature issue, while their test of the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM proved to have virtually zero field curvature- a remarkable finding for an f/2.8 zoom lens of this type.

Yep, I too tend to carry what I will need for the situation. I too am not fond of carrying larger lenses than needed. I am another who has found the D-FA 28-105mm DC WR often has been the best choice, and an excellent performer on my K-1 II, and it is also quite compact. When I need f/2.8 in a zoom lens on my K-1 II, I too have an oldie but very goodie Tokina 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 ATX Pro II, which I bought from B&H in their last batch of new stock, since it was being discontinued. It was bought for use on my 35mm film Pentax PZ-1p and I loved it. Now since getting my K-1 II it has found new life! The FA 31mm Ltd is a fine choice, but of course does not go as wide as 28mm. It is also subject to vignetting at its largest apertures. But that might not show up in many scenes, and it does tend to disappear when stopped down just a bit. I have used it for low light and night scenes, where the vignetting is very often less noticeable. Here, I've had best performance from the HD version. AF seems better, and there is not that glowy or bloomy effect around lights.

If landscapes are your primary use case, I'd go for the DFA 28-105 over your other two options, mainly for the versatility of the long zoom range and reassurance of weather sealing.

You'll probably be shooting stopped down most of the time, so the wide aperture and brighter viewfinder with the other two are somewhat moot.

As a user of K-1 , and as owner of FA 31, K 28f /2 , K 28 f/3,5 and A 28f/2 , and looking over my archives, I can tell that my most widely used in such focal lenses have been FA 31 and both K28. In my oppinion , the A 28 f/2 isn“t really at the same league of the other three. Its only advantage is the "A" position. The best of all is of course the K 28f/2 , as regards clarity, bokeh, sharpness , colours,... everything. Of course , it is an all manual lens that performs very well on K-1 , but needs the use of the green button .

Since I have a Pentax 28mm that I've not used very much (not even sure which one, and I haven't even listed in my equipment list for the forum) I am interested in this thread. I did a quick "DuckDuckGo" search and found the following opinion in a DPReivew thread ("What is the Best 28mm Lens for Pentax K-Mount - Pentax ME Super") from 2011:

"SMC K 28 f 2 is the best for bokeh and everything.

smc M and A 28 f 2 not so fine, bokeh is pretty terrible in fact.

SMC K 28 f 2.8 is very good.
SMC K 28 f 3.5 very good sharpness but show strong vigneting

smc M f 2.8 - two versions, first very good, second good.
smc M 28 f 3.5 OK

smc A 28 f 2.8 so-so good

smc F 28 f 2.8 good but not mutch

smc FA 28 f 2.8 better then F but not very good, and rectangular lens hood is recomanded, not just for flare resistance, but for contrast too.

Pentax 28 is in fact 29 mm

SMC K 30 f 2.8 is very-very good, but warmer/yellower in rendering.

FA 31 f 1.8 LIMITED show fantastic gradation rendering, but at f 1.8 is too creamy for my taste on full frame 35.
Is very good for APS-C...."

OK here is my two-pennyworth...........

The old manual focus wide angle lenses all had a distance scale number (10feet/3 metres) and an f-stop (f8) etched in red, instead of white. This was a quick way to set your lens up for hyperfocal distance focussing. Set the distance to 10 feet and the f stop to f8, and everything in your image from about 5 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus. This will work well for wide landscapes and closer scenes. There will be an argument that if you use an aps-c sensor the f-stop should be one stop slower (f-11). Give this a try when you next go out shooting and you don't have to worry about focussing at all !

For scenes where you want to use a wider aperture for subject isolation there are two methods I suggest which should be better than using your eyesight to judge through the viewfinder with a manual lens.............

1. Set the camera to AF. When your subject is in-focus the green hexagon should illuminate, and the camera will beep if you have that set up in "sounds". Remember you are using SPOT centre AF point only, so this needs to be over the subject.

2. Use the Live View mode on the camera zoomed to 100% I find this works best if you use a tripod. You have the ability to examine the subject on the zoomed image before you take the shot. The subject need not be central, as you can move the 100% view around. As you turn the focus ring you can clearly see your subject come into or go out of sharp focus. This is my preferred method for manual lenses when subject isolation is important.

was a good show. Unflrtunately one camera that was supposed to do a time lapse malfunctions & didin't fire. Two others (including the infrared I was excited about) are just enough out of focus they're useless and can't be salvaged.

On short notice we planned a grill out and eclipse watching party at my daughters place on the west side of Hamilton, Ohio. This is at the southern edge of the eclipse path. Turned out to be a decent day so I took along my K-s2 and borrowed my daughters tripod. One photo shows some lens flare, but I've started the rumor that its actually an alien spacecraft, most likely a Romulan invasion transport craft!

Thanks, it appears to be blooming a few weeks earlier over there. In the Netherlands the fields are only barely turning yellow.

After three minutes of totality behind a dense cloud, the sun and moon emerged long enough for me to snap this picture of the "Diamond Ring." The lingering cloud on the left provides depth and context for an interesting day chasing open skies for the eclipse.

When would you use AF-S (Discuss)

Not specifically related to the K3 III but I only ever use AF-C when tracking a moving subject (runner/car/dog). For most of my other photography I will always use AF-S.

If you are using a focus/recompose method to take a shot of a static subject, AF-C will often focus on the wrong spot. I know a number of photographers like to use back-button AF only, and so when focussed on the subject will release the AF button and then any recompose will not affect the AF. I prefer to use shutter button half-press for focus, so AF-C would not work for me in this situation.

This nails it. I would also add that even when not recomposing, sometimes there are other things like leaves moving in the wind, birds flying through that could cause refocusing in AF-C. I have user modes set up with both methods, the one with AF-S has a single focus spot, the AF-C has multiple. But of course sometimes situations make me change on the fly, which is pretty easy.

Thank you to all, this has been a great response this week. Twelve submissions... perhaps beaches make for popular images for PP tweaking, who knows. ;)

Just a few comments on those I particularly like, that caught the eye of the old Kerrowdown.

Andy58: "I can remember plenty of sunny days in Scotland as a kid!"... I think your memory may well be playing tricks on you, as traditionally that's not the way, well certainly not here in the Highlands.:lol::lol: But your PP imagery seems to beg to differ with this fine Summer feel.

todd: You and I have similar views on our images, as you'll see at the end with my version. But not quite so sure about the introduced Cyan highlights here.

Mutters: Very nice indeed, I'm quite partial a little Orton myself. ;)

tuggie76: Very worried about the whole population of Scotland... appearing on this one beach all at the same time.:lol::lol:

Boundless: Now that's a great image, like this a lot. :)

MSL: Flare and sunstreaks make for a quite different vision.

Now to the winner... Boundless (non textured version) wins with such a clean and simple image, which catches the scene perfectly for me. Mentioned in Despatches go to Mutters and tuggie76

I played too, so here's my take on this scene...

So many thanks to all who submitted and viewed... it's now over Boundless to set and judge the next one.

I would do as suggested, then read and implement the recommended settings:

Pentax K-1 Review - Recommended Settings | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Or at least review them. The firmware updates might change recommended options a bit and personal preference also should be considered.

I would reset the camera first, then immediately do a firmware upgrade. Remember to have full batteries for the upgrade. There were several useful functions added after the 1.5x series. Then you can continue with the various modifications such as user modes and folder names, etc. It will soon be *your* camera. You made a good choice in acquiring a K-1. - Jack

Congrats on the purchase, you now have a perfect pair!
I don't think the order matters, but the full battery is important indeed.
Additionally, I seem to remember that the reset option still keeps a few settings, I don't remember which but it will probably be worth checking all submenus after the procedure.
Alternatively, there is an option in the hidden Debug menu to fully wipe all settings, but I don't recommend going there unless you're fully comfortable with it...

+1. Yes, reset the camera first. I recently bought a used K-1 as well, and did a reset. I think one of the only things that didn't get cleared out was the Copyright info and photographer's name, so make sure you dive into that menu and take a look so you don't have someone else's name in your EXIF data. I recall everything else was reset to factory default though.

Enjoy the camera - it's an amazing piece of kit. I love mine.

PS - Jack, hello from Tumbler Ridge. We're practically neighbours. I work there, but live in Ontario...back and forth....long commute....
