Thank you all for the comments! I'll have several days off between working and classes in a week. I'm going to try and organize a shoot in addition to finally building a "macro box", so stick around this thread and i'll post some more soon!

Picture.com, "Endless Journeys" Coffee Table Book Scam

I just wanted to post this so that everyone would be familiar with this scam. I found it browing Facebook.com, where an ad was listed for a photo contest through Picture.com in which you could win $10,000. I figured what the hell, might as well send in a picture. Well about two weeks later I get a letter in the mail claiming that my picture was selected to be published in a coffee table book called "Endless Journeys". It also stated that I could order a copy for $80. A quick google search shows some threads dating back to 2004, where the "Endless Journeys" scam was still being used.

So, picture.com is just A BIG SCAM. Here's a good thread about just such a thing

I've tried long exposure shots before with cars that are running, the engine vibration is just too much for the camera and you get a bad picture. Just about all the long exposure car shots you see out there where camera rigs are used are usually slowly pushed cars.

And yes, it was about 1-2 ft of standing water. If you saw the layout of the asphalt behind the store, you could easily see how it could happen with 3 days of steady rain. No need to argue about this, what's the point?

Wow those are all very great shots. I am very fond of the last picture, the colors really stand out.

Which lens did you use to shoot the two landscapes with? I am in the market for a good prime lens to use for landscapes and am hoping you can help me figure out which lens to buy.

The car in the water is a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. Its a high performance model that is popular among enthusiasts. Because it is known as the Evolution, it is commonly referred to as an EVO here in the states (and probably elsewhere as well.)

And yup i was in about 1.5-2 ft of standing water when I took that shot. I've been accused of photoshopping the reflection onto the picture many times, but if you look closely at the front bumper you can actually see the point where the bumper is touching the water. Not that I'm accusing you of accusing me of photoshopping  :)

The 2nd shop was taken in a Target parking lot. I took out my fisheye lens, set it at full wide and placed it on my tripod in the interior of the car. I set the camera for a 10s exposure I believe. I was actually behind the car, pushed it while my friend held the steering wheel at an angle, and remotely triggered the shutter when we got up to a slow and steady speed.

Help with selecting a portrait lens

MSM,

I have owned both the Canon and Pentax version of the 28-75 tamron (althought the Canon was an older model). Both lenses produced the same results. I loved the lens so much on my canon that I had to get it for my Pentax. I have to say that it can produce somewhat soft pictures at 2.8, but otherwise I can't find a single gripe about it.

As for the Lens dilemma, I wish i had experience with each so that I could chime in, but I don't. I would get the prime over a zoom though, for the aforementioned reasons (build quality, faster lens). Yah kids need a zoom sometmies when they are flying all over the place, but as they get older, they become more obedient, right? (well, some of them anyways) :p

I have the Tamron 28-75 and I must say I am very impressed with the lens for what I use it for, mostly outdoor automotive photography. It can be a little soft at 2.8, but only relative to itself at smaller apertures. I definitely reccomend this one!

Thanks for the info! An end of january release sounds appropriate, especially when considering that the current Pentax DSLR Rebates being offered is only valid on purchases through January 30th.

Now just have to hold off and see if the K10D Successor will be worth the extra quid!

Thats a great series! For some reason I absolutely love the picture of the little leaf popping up out of the snow (the landscape version). My favorite of the series.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments!

A little about the EVO shot: It was a super cold january night at about 2am. We were behind a local grocery store and found a huge puddle of water where it had just rained. Needless to say, the water was super cold, but I stood about 2 feet deep in it for that shot! Then the cops came, thinking we were vandalizing stuff and were so impressed by the pictures that they decided to stay and watch for a few minutes!

My gear currently is:

Pentax *ist DS acquired 2 years ago (can you believe I only have 2,000 shots on the body? shows you how much i get out and shoot :( )
Pentax 10-17 Fisheye
Sigma 105 macro
Tamron 28-75
Pentax 360FGZ flash w/ external flash accessories
Bogen tripod and ballhead

I'm hoping that the successor to the K10D will be announced before the DSLR Rebate ends. That way I can figure out if I'd like to go for the K10D while saving $100 or pony up for the "K20D". The *ist DS will be retired to backup duty.

Thank you for the nice comments! I wish I had more time to devote to taking pictures. Between working and studying I have little time to do so :(

Gotta love the EVO though, wish I had the money to afford one

Hey all! I've been meaning to sign up for the forums for a while, but just got around to it. I'm Chip, a 21 year old student in South Carolina, USA. I enjoy photography and have been a pentax user for about two years now. I just wish I had more time to do it! (working 35 hrs a week and taking 19 hrs of classes a semester just doesn't leave much time for shoots)

Anyways, I like taking picturesof just about anything, but most of my stuff seems to revolve around automotive photography. I'll post some samples to the forum when I get home from work.

My gear is:
Pentax *ist DS
Pentax K10D (on the way)
Pentax 10-17 fisheye
tamron 28-75
Sigma 105 macro
Pentax 360 flash
bogen tripod/ballhead

I also have external flash accessories (essential for macro stuff). All my editing/processing is done on a mac (dedicated mac user here!)

Anyways I hope that I can learn more about the world of photography from everyone here, and also be able to fine tune my photographs and make them as good as they possibly can be.
