No stains on mine, fired off many frames from F11 - F22, all clean, except that this camera resolves so much fine detail that I want to re-finish my walls!

Serial# 382407X
Purchased today in Metro Vancouver.

Hopefully the AA filter stain issue was just a small # of early production units.

Why buy expensive tripod?

I used a $25 tripod for a number of years, too many years actually, and everytime I had to adjust it, I would curse myself for being cheap. A good tripod will last a lifetime, and it will be easy to use, and the easier it is to use, the more you will use it. When I only had a $25 tripod, I would avoid using it at all costs.

I bought a $250 tripod and head, and its good enough for what I use it for, and should last me for a long, long time.

To me, it seems that SR locks quicker, which is nice. AF seems about the same, but I plan to test it more thoroughly tomorrow to know for sure.

Raise of price DA*50-135 in Canada : I feel I want to cry

Wow, 1700 for a DA*50-135 its a nice lens, but damn. I'm glad I bought mine when I did, based on the 1700 CAD price tag, I've had a better return on my DA*50-135 than I've had in the stock market, and my RRSP's.

Congrats on the new lens. The DA35mm is a very nice lens, and I love mine!

Even though you are planing to use it as a normal, play around with some macro shots, you'll be amazed at how close it can focus, and its a lot of fun when you are bored :)

K20D - memory card problem

Sounds like a crappy SD card. I'd try a card from a major manufacturer (sandisk, Lexar).

Pentax warranties vary depending on country.

I know that Pentax Canada has a 2 year warranty on Bodies and Lenses, not sure about flashes, but I *think* it may be 2 years as well.

Actual RAW file size and recordable image number

The .PEF files out of my K100DSuper are pretty consistant at about 10MB in size each. My K20D on the other hand has files that range from 13MB to 20MB.

It looks like its the "lossless" compression of the .PEF files, but it seems to average out to around 160-169 images per 4GB CF card for me. It depends on what I am shooting, if I am shooting landscape, my images are larger as there are more colors, and things going on. If I am doing night shots, my filesizes are quite a bit smaller.

I live in Surrey, BC, a suburb of Vancouver and I have found that most of the camera shops around do not keep any of the good stuff in stock. Future Shop and Best Buy have pushed out all of their Pentax cameras, London Drugs definately caries the bodies, lens selection varies depending on the store, I have seen a FA50/1.4 and a DA*16-50 at one location.

Most places that have any pentax lenses seem to have the 18-55, 16-45, 50-200, 55-300 and that's about it.

When I was in Toronto last year Aden Camera had lots of Pentax lenses in stock, I was told that they try to keep all of the current lenses in stock.

PhotoLife, a Canadian magazine always has Pentax Ad's in it, BC Outdoors usually has a Pentax ad as well.

I do see a lot of Pentax shooters when I am out around Vancouver, especially in Stanley Park.

I keep hearing that Video will be the future must have feature on all new dSLR cameras, but frankly, I have no desire for it, and I don't get all of the lusting for it. I have a JVC Everio camcorder that we almost never use, and it has nothing to do with video quality, etc. I like still images, and my family would rather have me send them photos

To me, the video on an SLR is a sales tool, something to pull users in with, but in reality, most will not use it.

The Canon shooters that I know are always in awe of my DA 35 Limited macro. Most of my friends are gearheads, and there is something magical about a lens machined out of aluminum.

Most of the Canon shooters I know use Rebels, and they don't understand the "extra" features that my K100DSuper has over the Canon, never mind the K20D and its weather sealing (why would you want to shoot in the rain?) :)

I agree, the DA35 Limited is an awesome lens. I wish I used mine more; however, now that spring is here, providing that we get nicer weather here, I anticipate using it a lot more.

I do find that I use my DA35 more for walking around as I really like the FoV on digital. When I do use it for a macro photo, it always impresses me at how sharp it is.

FA 20-35 vs FA J 18-35

When I got my K100D Super, the first thing that I did was mount my 20-35 on it, the kit lens stayed in the box for a couple of weeks.

The 20-35 has a good close focus range too!

I have a set of images from the 20-35 on flickr:

I'd go for the 20-35/f4. I have it, and for a long time it was my most used lens. (until I got the DA*16-50). I still use the 20-35 when I want a wide-normal zoom range, and I want to travel light.

Some may find the zoom range limiting, but I haven't found it to be a problem personally.

Good luck finding one, they are hard to find, and treasured by those that own them!

Purchase DA70 or keep using my DA*50-135?
Posted By apeman

I don't think there is an easy answer for you. It sounds like you are going to have to get the DA70 and see how much you neglect the 50-135, and at that point, you'll know what you want.

I'd like to have all of the limited lenses, but I've been trying to build a "most bang for the buck" kit, which is why I settled on the 50-135, sharp, fast, and very nice focal range.

Either way, I think you'll be happy with whatever you decide to do. Both are excellent lenses, it simply comes down to what works for you.

Are you satisfied with the SDM?

I'm satisfied with the SDM. Its not as fast as the screw focus mechanism in some lenses, but its dead silent, which is nice for taking candid photos.

The 16-50 seems to focus very quickly, the 50-135 is slower, but it also has a large throw.

I did not purchase these lenses based on SDM, I based my decision on the sample photo's that I saw from both, and I would buy them again without SDM.

Received 9013471 as a replacement from Pentax (first copy did not focus, faulty SDM). And it seems to be really good. Lots of detail just like my 50-135.

Too bad I had to send the original copy back to Pentax for service, and wait a month to get it back after shelling out my hard earned money.

What's your backup strategy?
Posted By apeman

My backup process involves the following:

1. Copy Raw images from the memory card to my main PC which doubles as a file server. (Ubuntu Linux)
2. Edit images on my Macbook using lightroom. Lightroom doesn't touch the raw files.
3. Automatic scripts on my linux box rsync my images folder to Amazon S3 (15 cents per GB!)

I also backup my macbook to Amazon AWS as well as using Time machine with a usb drive to keep a copy of my system available. I do this mainly as a convience if my laptop is stolen, I simply buy a new macbook, and restore the time machine backup, and then rsync any missing data files.

The best backup is an automatic one, set it and forget it. The benefit of Amazon E3 is that I can access my files from anywhere, and I can backup my laptop while traveling.

Thanks everybody.

I'll have a look at the Kata bag. I think I'm going to head down to the Crumpler store in Vancouver with some of my gear.

Thanks!

Hi All -

I'm looking for a new camera bag/backpack that can fit my K100D Super with the DA*16-50/f2.8 attached, my DA* 50-135/f2.8, a FA 50/1.4, and my AF360FGZ flash unit, along with my 13" macbook. I'd like to hear some suggestions based on your experiences with carry-on camera/laptop combo bags.

I'd prefer to carry just one pack, and it has to be carry-on sized for WestJet in Canada. I've been looking at several bags online from Crumpler, Lowepro, etc. but most seem to be slightly larger than the dimensions allowed: 55cmX23cmX40cm / 21.5"X9"X15.5" and a second bag: 43cmX16cmX33cm/16.5"X6"X13"

The less it says camera bag, the better :)

Thanks!
