Is Pentax done in Medium Format?

Yeah, but the only modern full frame MF lens is the 25mm D FA (less common version vs. DA), so I highly doubt they'd go FF either, due to needing an almost entirely new [modern] lens line-up.

I've been shooting with the Pentax 645D, then the 645Z exclusively since 2012, but I'm looking very hard at the Fuji GFX 100S for the extra MP, better wide angle options, smaller footprint, and the likelihood of continuing to upgrade their MF mirrorless camera systems. And YES I print very large, sometimes 10'+ and I'm a professional landscape photographer, so it makes sense for me.

Before divorcing all my Pentax camera gear, are we all pretty sure Pentax is done with upgrading their medium format cameras? It would be a shame, because they make some excellent lenses and user-friendly cameras.

Camera Repair: Pentax 645Z & 28-45mm

I recently dropped my 645Z + 28-45mm lens on pavement, badly denting the filter ring and leaving several dents on the body. I've made a claim with my insurance and naturally the adjuster is making things as difficult as possible and is requiring I find out if someone can repair it first.

Is there anywhere in the U.S. that could potentially repair the lens + camera?

On a separate note, make sure you zip your camera bag shut before you swing it onto your shoulder, SMH.

I'll touch base with him later and see how much the repair would likely cost...I just bought a mint 645-FA 150-300mm with original soft case for under $300 w/ S&H on eBay. If his repair is significantly less than that maybe I'll have him repair it and you'll see it for sale on this forum :)

Exposure Issues (due to 645-FA 150-300mm or 645Z?)

I put both my 28-45 and 80-160 lenses on and had no issues, so like you said it may be an aperture issue with the lens, which was also my original suspicion (and what I'd hoped for, instead of a camera issue).

---------- Post added 04-09-20 at 10:20 AM ----------

I just compared my 150-300 lens to one that I know has been working normally...I'm pretty sure it's a sticky aperture because when I stop it down manually using the aperture ring and then move the little lever (or whatever that's called) it opens back up slowly, instead of instantly like my other functioning lens.

Now, the question is...can I get it repaired anywhere? Or does it just need some lubrication and can I do that myself?

Here's an image, they were all shot with identical exposure settings, but they're totally different exposures when you look at them:

These were all shot with the same camera settings and shot in rapid succession, so I'm sure the exposure difference wasn't due to changing light.

Exposure Issues (due to 645-FA 150-300mm or 645Z?)

I just started noticing some exposure issues with my 645Z where despite having the exact same camera settings, the exposure varies widely from image to image. For example, let's say I'm shooting at 1/60 sec, f/8, ISO 100...I don't change any settings, but from image to image the exposure varies widely.

So far it only seems to do this when using my 645-FA 150-300mm, so I'm hoping it's an issue with the lens (this wouldn't surprise me as I dropped it a while back and cracked the lens hood) and not the camera.

Any ideas on troubleshooting this?

645Z vs. Fuji MFD Mirrorless

My business is based around selling artwork (I have a gallery and also sell work at art festivals) and it’s important for me to be able to print images very large (like 8’ wide and sometimes larger) when needed. I’ve found that in order to make a living at selling photographic artwork I need to be able to cater to higher end clients.

It would also be nice to have the option of cropping while still keeping sharpness.

When I looked at the weight and dimensions of the Fuji 23mm vs. the Pentax D FA 25mm and also the Fuji 32-64 vs. the Pentax 28-45, the Fuji lenses were smaller and lighter.

I can’t speak to the usability of the Fuji, but I may try renting one eventually before I make any sort of decision. For now I’m still pretty happy with the Pentax, except for the size and weight. I have a feeling I’d take the camera out on more hikes if my camera bag wasn’t so large and heavy.

Guess I should have done a quick search on B&H before asking about adapting the Pentax 645 to Fuji MF G mount: FotodioX Pro Mount Adapter for Pentax 645 Lens to P645A-GFX-PRO

There are only two reviews for it and those are for the non-pro version. One review said the lens can easily fall off if you're not careful, but again that's the non-pro version, so maybe that one is better.

Thank you, that was one of the more important things I was wondering.

Yes, I'm happy with the 645Z and my lens set-up, but eventually the system will need to be updated. It's not about bragging rights or anything, it's just that the 100mp sensor is something that I know would benefit my business. The Fuji pricing on lenses is also very good for MF.

645Z vs. Fuji MFD Mirrorless

Hey all, I've been shooting with the Pentax 645D and then the 645Z since 2012 and have to say I've been pretty pleased.

However, the idea of reducing the overall size and weight by moving to a mirrorless MFD is also tempting. Adding on the fact that Pentax no longer seems serious about pursuing a new version of the 645Z or new 645 digital lenses and with Fuji releasing a new 100mp mirrorless sometime in the future (and supposedly their lenses that resolve well enough to take advantage of the sensor) I'm not really feeling all that loyal to Pentax anymore. Plus, my understanding is that Fuji's customer service is much better than Pentax (I've never had any equipment issues with Pentax, but have heard horror stories of 6+ months to get a sensor or lens repaired). I shoot landscapes and often print very large (I've sold a number of 8'+ wide prints), so the 100mp sensor would actually make sense for me, especially if I decide I need to crop something or am in a situation where using my pano head isn't an option.

So, some questions for anyone that may know...

Can the Pentax 645 lenses be adapted to work on the Fuji mount? I love my 28-45mm, plus have ten other Pentax MF lenses for that system. The Fuji lens line up is more lacking than Pentax, which is also something that may hold me back, but if the lenses could be adapted that opens up more options.

Or, could the Fuji 23mm be adapted to work on my 645Z? I often find my 25mm to not quite wide enough, plus it isn't as sharp as the 28-45mm.

Also, has anyone done a comparison between the 645Z and new mirrorless Fuji MF cameras?

2018 Pentax Survey

I started to fill out the survey, but then found that whoever created it doesn’t realize that Pentax makes medium format cameras. I am a professional landscape photographer and have no interest in the smaller Pentax formats. What I’d like to see is an update to the 645Z and new lenses introduced in that format. Please update your survey to include MFD.

Considering moving to medium format 645D or 645Z

If you have a D810 already I wouldn't go to the 645D, as it's not that much of an upgrade and is much more limited in ISO. I owned a 645D first and now a 645Z and loved them both, but now that I have the Z would never go back. There's a good jump in quality there, especially considering the greatly improved ISO performance with the CMOS 50mp sensor. As far as walk-around-ability with the 645Z, I'd say that depends on the lens. If you have the 28-45mm (GREAT lens BTW) then that's a pretty bulky and heavy set-up. If you have the 35mm or 75mm primes then it's not so bad.

25mm vs 28-45mm comparison on 645Z

I own both the D FA 25mm and 28-45mm. The 28-45mm is a bit sharper at all apertures (by far the sharpest lens I've ever used), though the 25mm is quite sharp from f/10-f/14 (I don't often shoot with it at wider apertures). It starts to fall off just a touch at f/16 and more by f/22. The 25mm is a great lens to have...that 3mm makes a big difference in the wide angle. I'd love it if Pentax came out with something even a bit wider.
