I tend to think women argue on the internet about many things other than photography gear and terminology. :)
Seriously though, I get why PF has so few women. I'm part of a subscription-only, all-women photography forum. When I need encouragement, support, or constructive criticism on the technical and aesthetic aspects of an image, I go there. When I want to get smacked in the face with cold hard opinions or have a laugh, I come here. I'm used to the latter because I get it all the time at my mostly-male jobsite (with surprisingly more sexual harassment than here on the web) so I guess I can take it a little better...at times.

Haha, NicoleC!
For reference though, I had the same issues with the last contest and I owned all of the major products given. I'm trying to be very impartial here with my critiques and suggestions for the contests. :)
I would like to see random entry contests and maybe a scavenger hunt type contest.
Photograph a red car, 3 birds, and a couple holding hands and submit the photos. EVERYONE who meets the requirement for that day is entered.
next day
Photograph a block of cheese, the sunrise, and a yellow flower. Again, everyone who meets the requirement for that day (photographs all 3 and submits) is entered in the contest for that day.
etc
ANY type of voting/liking produces popularity issues and photography is subjective to rate as it is. As NicoleC mentioned, if you don't have that current trend look you're not going far here. So just include everyone who meets the requirements for that day. It would be fun to include EVERYONE in the community. Instead of the regulars or fluff posters. :)

Fair enough, and free >is< free. I really don't wish to be seen as complaining. All the same I think you should consider
options other than mass posting. For example, Digitalis posted a lengthy comparison of two lenses earlier today/yesterday.
I'd say that one post was worth 10, 20 perhaps even 100 'average' posts on the forum in terms of quality. And yet, he will
only receive one 'post' for that effort, plus any likes received.

Hmmm.
Should I go outside and take pictures or sit in front of the computer and post stuff on the internet?
Yeah this is another contest I won't be winning.

I think so too. The way the current giveaway is defined will lead to extra hot air being transferred with no guarantee of any else. This was proven last go around and, if anything at PF, it is the one thing we already have abundantly.
How about an old fashioned 'random' giveaway? ..all can enter and one name drawn. voila.
Or even a 'find the secret word one a webpage in the site and submit it' type contest... Last time, people were posting junk and having friends like their posts.. you could see the cliques here.
In any case, fantastic prizes this time around. :)

The likelihood that I will win this are astronomically low. I just don't have that much to say and I don't say it that well. I think I'll just keep saving my pennies for the FA 77.
You should have a contest for those of us who are incompetent.:)

Relax! IMGP5153-700 by Rupert2009, on Flickr
Squirrels favor Pentax 10 to 1 over anything else, and as long as there are squirrels there will be a Pentax to shoot them. Any other thought would be nuts...and squirrels do know nuts, they see them here all the time!

Well I may be the oddball but a big selling point of the K-01 for me is the Marc Newson design. Straightforward with just the right amount of buttons and dials, easy for my big ham hands to grip, and so damn cool. I really think it shares the philosophy of Leica with a cooler edge. Flame away!

When I first handled a K-01 (preview dummy body, actually), my first impression was "meh, the green button's in the wrong place". Now I don't even think about it. I've had trouble with the LCD a couple times, I guess, but I don't really think about that, either. Likewise for the rubber flappy door. My biggest nitpick these days is the lack of an electronic level.
I wasn't really interested in the K-01 when it came out, and I read a review that said the only people who would buy a K-01 were eccentric artists, camera collectors, and Pentax diehards. I have a box full of old Pentax bodies, so I'll plead guilty to all three, and it's obvious now that Pentax built the K-01 just for ME. I struggled with it for a couple weeks, but when I threw away the neck strap and stopped trying to force it to be a DSLR, it really bloomed and pushed me to work more creatively. On long shooting days, switching from a DSLR to the K-01 feels like a breath of fresh air.

I think calling it an "absolute piece of garbage" is just wrong. I mean, it has many great features. The sensor is great and it has a very weak AA filter, so the photos are very sharp. The AF isn't as fast as a DSLR, but after a firmware update it is acceptable for my uses. Of course, some types of photography need faster AF, but most don't. Its just a matter of patience. And really, the firmware update changed it significantly, the original firmware had very slow AF.
Button placement.. meh, I don't see the problem. It has plenty of buttons, as many as any entry DSLR, plus green, plus red button. I find them to be completely functional, and I use many old manual lenses that require green button metering. And I set the red button to be focus peaking (or DoF preview sometimes). I can't complain about these buttons. But sure, it takes some getting used to, just like with any new camera. I think its buttons are still much better than many entry level cameras, bridge cameras, P&S cameras, etc. But of course, it doesn't have as many dedicated buttons as some more advanced cameras. Because it not meant to compete with the D3 and 5D, its meant to be below the level of the K-5.
Oh, and of course there are features and elements of the K-01 that could be improved, but a) it was the first of its kind b) it was an experiment and c) any product could be further improved. I think the main mistake Pentax/Hoya did was the initial price of the K-01 being too high.
All that being said, the titular line is just an opinion, and I won't stop watching their videos just because of this one line. There is a difference between the reviews and this type of "debate" or "discussion" video. And we owners of the K-01 are used to harsh comments from the photographers community - and many more compliments from everybody else ;)
Seriously, with no camera before did people genuinely look at it and say it looks good. And then when they see the photos they are surprised that its not just form over function, but the good-looking camera also produces good photos.
To each their own. Enjoy your gigantic black box with edges everywhere and a big angry mirror furiously pumping inside. :p

Thank you Chris for having the courage and open-mindedness to come and respond.
I was actually immediately attracted to the marketing images of the K-01 (though I had to find them on the Canada and Europe websites since Pentax USA refused to market the camera). I bought a K-01 during the pre-order period for a light, walking camera to use with small primes, and I posted here. That was the first and only time I've bought a new camera pre-order.
Very few people understood then, and though a few now get it, very few understand now. I didn't want a K-30. I didn't want an EVF. I didn't really want video (I still don't see the point). I didn't want a skinny, shiny hipster plate like all the other Holly-wood people were buying. I didn't get another new dSLR until the K-3. I retired my K10D and used my K-01 exclusively.
Supposed rational reviews don't matter to me. I liked it then and I like it now. I just like it.

Frankly, the deal is still quite good with everything being thrown in. The internet mob mentality that leads to masses of people jumping on typos (even when the thread is actively discussing that the price seems too good to be true) and then acting entitled makes me a little bit sick.

Now $170.
Apparently the US distributor of Hong Kong Nest Photographic's tripods has a few too many of the 62" tall, 4-section, monopod-convertible, carbon fiber models (Nest 6294C) as they 30% off on eBay. The seller is OEC Camera, a well-known, US-based shop that specializes in Marumi filters, Sunwayfoto heads, and Visico lighting equipment.
Normally I don't post deals like this, but I currently have a Nest tripod in-house for review, and it's very well designed and constructed. The 6294C is the size of a Gitzo 2-series (29mm top tube sections, holds 20kg), but weighs less and packs smaller. It's frankly built better than anything even close to its normal price of $250 (Horusbennu, Weifeng, Dolica, etc.) and is more on par with the largest Sirui and Feisol tripods, and better designed than the Benros and Manfrottos I've compared it to.
At $147, this is a no-brainer if you currently need a light, but solid tripod. The only caveat is that it's matte grey and sky blue on the aluminum bits, so you need to be confident in your style: ;) |

I was just in the same boat and decided to get a desktop for my main processing needs. I didn't want to spend a lot, so I did a LOT of research, and I am pretty confident in saying that for $499, this is the very best deal there is anywhere: Amazon.com: CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra GUA880 Desktop (Black/Blue): Computers & Accessories
I've built my own computers before, so I wasn't afraid of that route, and I still couldn't do it cheaper. Key specs are: - AMD FX Quad Core 3.6GHz (4MB Cache)
- 8 GB DDR3 RAM
- 1024GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- Dedicated 1Gb NVIDIA Graphics card with DVI, HDMI, and VGA out
- 24x DVD RW
- 6 USB slots, 2 on front of case
- 1TB 7200rpm Harddrive
- 2 PCI slots expandable on motherboard
- Sweet looking case that runs SUPER quiet and has a blue light through its window
I can confirm that LR4 runs ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESSLY with the K-5 IIs 14 bit images. There is no lag - it's entirely seamless which is something I am not used to at all coming from my 8 year old laptop.
For monitors, this is what I have (well, the older, non LED version). $269 for a 23 inch 1920x1080 widescreen IPS screen. http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-VP2365-LED-23-Inch-Monitor-Black/dp/B0053YKE...dp_ob_title_ce
And it also rotates the entire monitor into portrait orientation which is a nice touch and great for processing.
Hope this helps :)
