Cactus V6 Flash Compatibility -- Profiling Successes and Failures

This is an old thread, but Cactus V6's and old flash guns still crop up every week on eBay, and given that they cost a fraction of the latest gear, there may still be people interested in what is possible.

The V6 is able to profile an analog TTL flash with a minimum of 3 different power settings. I have owned Centon FH95's since they were new. These have a guide number of 36 and swivel heads. Two have the Pentax non-AF module attached and one the Pentax AF module. Both support TTL. The difficulty is that they only have two manual power settings, full power and 1/16.

The first point to make is that although the V6 fires them, they are rejected out of hand by the V6 profile learner if I describe them as Pentax. However, it is happy for me to describe them as Canon, and it 'tunes' itself for 1/16 power.

In order to get the third setting point, I left the flash on 1/16, moved the flash head back from maximum zoom to minimum, and claimed the power was now 1/64.

This was enough to get the V6 to save the profile.

I tested the settings using a Jessops 'Portaflash' flash meter. It seems consistent at least down to 1/64, so I account it a success.

So how do they work in practice?

Very well, but with one caveat. The FH95's timeout and switch off automatically, and the timeout can neither be adjusted nor disabled. So after any sort of pause in the shooting, I have to go round them all and check they are still switched on.

Does anyone have any idea whether such commands exist? It would be handy to be able to do this via a tether.

Dear Admins

The Tamron SP MF 90mm F2.8 MACRO 1:1 (72B)

and the

Tamron Adaptall 200mm f/3.5 Auto Tamron

are both Adaptall Primes. I have had to load them into Tamron Legacy Primes. Please could they be moved to Tamron Adaptall Primes.

The
Tamron Adaptall 35-80mm f2.8-3.5 (QZ-35M)
Tamron Adaptall 38-100mm f3.5 (CZ-38M)

Tamron Adaptall 85-210mm f4.5 (QZ-210M)

are all three Adaptall Zooms. I have had to load them into Tamron Legacy Zooms
. Please could they be moved to Tamron Adaptall Zooms.

Although it wasn't me that loaded it, the

Tamron Adaptall Z220 (PZ 370) 70-220mm f3.8 constant

is also, you've guessed it, an Adaptall Zoom, so may I take the liberty of suggesting that it, too, be moved to Tamron Adaptall Zooms.

The

Tamron SP 35-210mm F3.5-4.2

in Tamron Legacy Zooms is also an Adaptall Zoom. However, in this case, it is already present in Tamron Adaptall Zooms; it is model 26A. It would make sense for the reviews to move across, any extra information details against the entry in Tamron Legacy Zooms to be added to the data for 26A, and the entry in Tamron Legacy Zooms to be deleted.

Yes. See Using KM, KA and M42 lenses on Pentax (and Samsung)DSLR's for an in-depth discussion of how it works in theory and practice.

I have been corresponding with Marcus about this. My K-X doesn't behave the same way as Kozlok's.

For me, pressing the Green Button has no effect at all when an M42 lens with adapter K or a Pentax K T-mount (with either non-conductive surfaces or a lens whose mount does not touch the contacts) is on the camera.

However, touching the Exposure Compensation Button (as indicated on the Pentax support Web-site) when the camera is in M mode mostly does what I would expect pressing the Green Button would do; it adjusts the exposure according to the current aperture (when it works; sometimes the camera chooses an exposure of 0.3 seconds instead).

The non-intuitive behaviour, and the different behaviours of different Pentax (and Samsung) cameras, look to me to be evidence of software bugs, especially as the foil trick can lead to the camera displaying a bogus aperture value, which it clearly shouldn't.

Perhaps it would help to build a table of observed behaviours, camera models and firmware revisions?

which MF 200mm f3.5 on a K10D?

The best 200mm f3.5 for image quality wide open I have used is the Komine-made Vivitar. It is outstandingly sharp and almost fringe-free. Images only lack a little in saturation. However, it is exceedingly heavy, and doesn't work well with any of the Teleconverters I have tried (and I have tried lots ...).

The Tamron Adaptall-2 200mm f3.5 Model 04B is almost as sharp, and is much lighter, but in demanding conditions exhibits obvious fringing wide open. However, if you're interested in f3.5 for low light situations, this shouldn't be a problem, and I would expect that this lens will be much easier to source, and cheaper than the Komine-made Vivitar. Copies of the 04B crop up on e-Bay UK pretty much every week.

The Chinon 200mm f3.5 handles well, but the image quality is a bit behind (but only looks poor in comparison with the above two). It seems to be 210mm rather than 200mm, which may be of interest.

The Tokina-made VivitarTX 200mm f3.5 feels great in the hand, but the images are obviously inferior.

The Korean-made (so Samyang?) Mirage 200mm f3.5 is horrible. I use it on a night-vision scope ...

None of the Tamron Adaptall, Adaptall-2 and Adaptall SP zooms I have that cover this range reach f3.5 (though the 52A claims to at shorter focal lengths, it does not). The sharpest/fastest that I have that goes to 200mm is the 46A, which is f4. Don't be put off by Adaptall.org's sneering at its 'cheap-looking hard plastic grip'. After 25 to 30 years, this has lasted much better than the rubber on my 02A, 03A, 04B, 20A, 23A, 103A and 104A. The 46A with a Pentax K mount can be bought for less than £20 on a camera shop Website or on e-Bay. I wouldn't bother with the PK/A adapter rather than the PK; I have three of the PK/A mounts and none of the three now work as they should. You are unlikely to be able to buy a PK/A for less than £20, and they have obviously not lasted as well as the glass, whilst ordinary PK mounts usually go for less than £10 on eBay UK.

The Kiron-made Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 also overstates its maximum aperture. It is in reality f3.8, it is obviously better at the short end, and it needs to be stopped down to f5.6 to give acceptable images, in my opinion. However, the great weight of this lens seems to mitigate camera shake, so without a tripod I can shoot with slower shutter speeds than I can with any of the other lenses listed here.

The Sigma XQ Zoom 80-200mm f3.5 really does seem to be f3.5, the 200mm is actually 210mm, and in terms of size it falls between the Tamron Adaptall/Adaptall 2/Adaptall SP Zooms and the Kiron-made Vivitar Series 1. I really wanted to like this lens. But I don't. I find it hard to focus (lack of contrast?), the images to my eye look flat and lifeless, and unlike with the Series 1, the images don't look better when I stop the lens down.

"Card locked" problem on ist DS

Dear Leo

In a response above that you wrote back in 2008 you mentioned in passing accidentally breaking the "Card Locked" detector switch when you opened up a K110D.

I have recently bought a second-hand K110D on e-Bay whose body and screws have marks, and a visible repair, that indicate that a previous owner opened it up.

This camera displays the "Card Locked" message with an unlocked card.

However, the camera is still able to read the card, since I can see its contents when I connect the camera to a PC.

So I wondered if you could share how you fixed your problem?

Best regards

DA lens on a FF camera?

I have the Samsung equivalent of the DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II (which is marked missing in the above thread). Its image circle gets larger as you zoom in from 18 to 55mm. I have never shot film with it, but I have mounted it on film cameras, (a P50 and a *isT), and the image circle fills the viewfinder without obvious vignetting from about 21 or 22mm (somewhere between the 18 and 24 inscribed on the lens).

The viewfinder on the P50 covers 92 percent of the film area, so it appears that the lens would function as a 23/24-55 mm zoom were it to be mounted on a camera with a full frame sensor.

In contrast, the image circle size on my Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR LD Aspherical IF SP does not change as the lens is zoomed in or out; there is appreciable vignetting in the film cameras' viewfinders at all zoom lengths.
