Duuuude, it's just a little debate I thought would be interesting. I believe I'm allowed to do that on a forum, no?

No doubt. I'm not arguing that. The K20D is definitely better than the K10D. I just think Pentax didn't make enough improvements to make the camera profitable (but, according to the length of this thread, I may have been proved wrong! ;))

That's definitely good to hear that Pentax will (probably) soon have a pro-level camera. Definitely something to dream about ;)
I'm not 100% sure what you meant by "compete with Canon, Sony and Nikon" but in a recent interview with Ned Bunnell, he said he was not going to try to take over the top two brands. But if that's not what you meant, then nevermind :)

And wow, your lens collection should definitely prove that point...

Ah! Good point!!
The thing is, for me, I never use a P-TTL flash. I always use my dandy old Vivitars 285HV or 4600, so this doesn't really benefit me :)

Honestly, I didn't even think of that when I wrote it. Definitely a good point!

:p

Yeah, FPS isn't a gigantic deal to me, but it's certainly nice to have >4 or 5 fps. The main reason for posting this was to shake up the pot. I love challenging what somebody may think is a great thing, or a great idea, because then it really shows why somebody likes it. Maybe I should join a debate club or something ;)

And, although I'm slightly ashamed of this, I bought my first Pentax DSLR because it was CHEAP. I was on a tight, tight, tight budget. $430 for camera and lens. It has served me 2 years 99% flawlessly, and I LOVE it! I like Pentax and being able to use my 1967 Takumar 300/4 :)

Does that answer your question?

Hmm! Good point, I never realized that with Sony. And yes, specs do sell. Which is a shame for the K20D. :(

Yeah, I was debating in my post, D300 or D80, but I chose D300, because the D80 is (I think!) equivalent of the K10D. But I think the D300 is more comparable to the K20D than the D80 is.

YES. YES YES YES. I loathe c*non, too. I also feel the exact same way about Nikon. I will exaust all Pentax options before I resort to switching to another brand. (Which would be Nikon if I had to)

You have some good points! I think I'd rather wait until the next generation Pentax high-end camera comes out (be it a K30D or K3D or whatever it will be). Thanks for your comment!

I understand what the camera does, sir. But not 100%, because I haven't owned it. And I have no intentions of switching systems. Because Pentax still rocks, and I have a huge investment in Pentax glass/accessories

Oh yeah, if I wanted superb IQ with absolutely no problems, I'd get the K20D. I do not at all doubt the IQ of the camera. Some people demand 14mp. I personally would rather get a great picture from the start, rather than cropping. But I must admit, sometimes I did wish for a larger picture to work with. But I still think it does not justify buying a whole new body. This camera is just not for me, that's all :)

Okay, you are an exception ;)
You do actually use all of those 14mp, and doing magazine covers and jobs on assignment that demand A++ IQ, so I don't even question why you use the K20D. And if I had your job, your assignments, and such, I'd get the K20D without hesitation. I just thought I'd throw in another opinion to the forum :)

Although I must say, I have a feeling I'll get the K30D when it comes out. Or the next generation high-end Pentax, whatever the name will be.

And yes, this post was just to stir up the pot a little bit. There were like 20 posts in a row that said how much everybody loved their K20D. :)

Definitely. It's good to see somebody else thinks the way I do! :) I can definitely relate to inaccurate metering with manual lenses. I can't use Av on my Tak300/4 because sometimes it's more than 2 stops wrong!
I agree with you, sir :)

Yes sir, I am a Pentax owner, and proud to be :) haha. I will stay with Pentax as long as I can. Hopefully they can produce a top-line pro camera comparable to the D3 or 1D mkIII soon, because I see myself going there in a few years. I still love Pentax, so don't get me wrong about that :)

I just think that this camera could have had some better improvements. The IQ is fabulous. Crystal clear pictures, I realize this. If I had a need for billboard-size pictures, I'd jump on this camera ASAP ;)

As for high ISOs, yes, I did not mention that in my post. I hate...nay...loathe ISO noise, so I always stay away from high ISOs. Nevertheless, 3200 and 6400 are worth mentioning, regardless of how I would probably never use it. And I must say, for an APS-C size 14mp sensor, it handles ISOs very well, regardless of whether or not I would use it.

This is true, and this is also not true. When the K10D came out, I wanted one SO badly! But when the K20D came out, I said "meh.."

I don't mean to be a jerk with crappy arguements, but does "being cool" justify spending $1000-1400?

Yeah, I said it! I just don't understand why somebody would pay $1000-1400 for a camera that isn't THAT much improved from the K10D.

Yes, it has a very nice sensor. I'll give it that much.

-Live view? It's been discussed. Some will use it, others will not. Some say they will use it, but never will.
-PC sync socket? A hot shoe adapter costs $20 or less.
-Dust alert system? Tiny improvement.
-Expanded Dynamic Range? Okay, this may come in handy for picky photographers or portraitists, but for the majority of us, there's Photoshop, GIMP, Aperture, Corel, etc.
-Custom image functions? This may just be my opinion, but whoop dee doo! Again, IMHO this is just for a picky photographer that doesn't want to post-process his/her pictures.
-Still sync speed is 180.
-2.7-inch LCD. Almost all the others are 3"
-Shake reduction system still anything but extraordinary.
-AND still only 3 FPS

Now, don't get me wrong. For the photographer who demands perfect IQ and huge-sized images, this is a great camera. But that's not everybody. The Canon 40D, Nikon D300, and Sony a-700 are all SO much better, judging by specs.

PLEASE note, though, that this was written by an owner of a K10D, not a K20D. I've never owned one. I do not mean to offend anybody by this; I'm only sharing my opinion, and starting a debate. :) People keep saying what they love about this camera, but IMHO it's not that big of an upgrade from the K10D. Good luck against 40D, D300, and A-700.

New Pentax Flash?

I asked Pentax this same question about a month or two ago and they said they had nothing planned. But I don't blame them, they have a pretty good supply of flashes; very comparable to any other brand. And the 360 and 540 are very advanced as it is. What do you think they could improve?
