I don't have any pictures currently, but I just picked up a Pentax K1000 last week when we stopped by our local recycling company. They had recently given us some server hardware and we needed a few more parts that they sat aside for us to pick up. While we were there, I noticed the camera sitting in a pile. I picked it up and was looking at it and they said it was mine if I wanted it. The mirror was stuck up so I wasn't sure what condition it was in, but I wasn't going to pass on a free Pentax camera. When I opened the back when I got home, the mirror decided to drop down and other than needing cleaned, it seems to be working perfectly. Came with a Craig Optics 35-70mm Macro lens and Hoya Skylight (1B) filter. Not sure if I'll try shooting anything on film again but we'll see.

My uncle's K1000 is the camera that made me want to get an SLR instead of my 35mm P&S. (Sadly, my K-7 that I got myself in 2019 was my first SLR camera.) I still need to try again to get my uncle's K1000 and assorted lenses at some point as well. (Gonna keep bringing it up every so often when I see him as my goddaughter went Nikon instead of following in his Pentax footsteps but he's been holding onto it in case she wants it.)

One of our shipments of computers we bought for a couple computer labs at work came with standard QWERTY keyboards, but were the slightly funky ISO standard layout. This puts almost all of the keys in the right spots but has the weirdly shaped enter key and moves the keys around the enter key to accommodate this, such as the \ key, which as someone in IT who uses it a lot and is a touch typist, really screws with me.

While I am almost always on a QWERTY keyboard, I used to also be a touch typist on a Dvorak layout. (Used a standard QWERTY keyboard, but just changed the layout. Have often though of buying a keyboard with the Dvorak layout printed on it, but never have. There was one years ago that had a hardware switch to switch between QWERTY and Dvorak at the hardware level so you could just leave the computer set to standard QWERTY.) I was surprised at how quickly I had picked it up, If I only had to use my work and computers, I might go back to it, but as I'm IT and constantly sitting down at other peoples computers, it's easier to stay with one layout.

Not really a new acquisition, but I just came across a Pentax-M 50mm lens that I apparently had in a storage box. Had no idea it was there/forgotten about it. Might have to see about finding it a new home as I prefer my Pentax-A 50mm over the Pentax-M. I also need to check my bag with my K-7 as I thought that's where my M-50 lens was... Perhaps I have two? lol

Closest I have to these trucking experiences was one of our RR stone arch underpasses. They're technically one lane and you're supposed to yield to oncoming traffic, but most just zip through because it's only really a 1 lane underpass if there's a truck coming through that needs to travel the center to make it under the clearance. I came up behind a guy that almost stopped too late. The truck was already halfway through the tunnel and he had to slam his breaks to avoid the truck. Then in the process of backing up, he did it crookedly and backed his car into the walls outside the tunnel and busted his tail light. Doesn't help that the road curves into the tunnel right before it, so in the day, you can't tell if anyone is coming from the other side.

And this is why you should always slow down before heading into one of these old tunnels when you can't see the other side. I've had a few times where I've had to hit my breaks more than expected, but because I do slow down coming up to it, I've never had an actual problem.

I'm not sure what magnet you are referring to, is this on the wrist strap or hand strap?

After doing another look, it seems my memory was a bit off, as I don't see anything resembling what I was picturing in my head. It must have been a different company's product. They have the wrist strap which isn't really what I want, and "the clutch" which looks to be a pretty basic hand strap. Neither is as robust as I was thinking, it seems I'd have to go with a different brand for a more secure version that is more of a combination wrist and hand strap.

Since it looks like the clutch has to connect directly to the strap lug, I could possibly use the clutch and wrist strap together which would make it a tad more secure, the wrist strap would catch it if it slipped from my hand. But I'm not sure it would work like other more secure hand straps where you can relax your hand and not hold the camera while walking, but instantly grab it and bring it up for a shot whenever needed. (Though the one picture on their site seems to imply that the base plate can have multiple anchors attached as well as it shows a camera strap attached to the other lug and apparently the base plate while the clutch is also attached, so I could keep it secure with the neck/shoulder strap and can probably slide my hand into the hand strap quickly or just grab overtop of it if needed.)

EDIT> Nevermind, a little further reading on the wrist cuff explained the magnet that is used to wear it as a braclet.

Just stopped by the post office and picked up a Tokina 500mm f/8 mirror lens and a Peak Design strap with a set of 4 anchor points. Both received from kind members over on the marketplace.

This brings me one step closer to actually buying a wrist/hand strap as I know Peak Design also makes those that work with these anchor points.

Nature Mango or Tango (I'm not sure which Toucan was which.)

I don't see an animals category, so I'm assuming Nature would be the correct category. Doing a quick glance through my photos while offloading my SD card during a few spare minutes at work and thought this one looked rather lovely. Straight out of the camera with resizing on the computer being the only PP. Luckily, I did get a screw-on metal hood for the F100-300 shortly before the trip which probably helped as well.

While I did pretty well with my F100-300, I wish I would have taken the DA55-200 as there were a few times I wished I could get a little wider and while I did get a few at a full 300mm, I could have managed with a max of 200mm.

This was taken handheld at 100mm.

I still randomly keep an eye out for an Evengelion Type 01 (the purple one) but finding anything for a reasonable price seems to be a lost cause. (Cheapest I've seen recently I think was around the $800 mark which is too rich for my blood for a Q10.)

A little late getting back to this thread, but in the discussion of heights, I have a weird (in)tolerance for heights. I had no trouble when younger, climbing out onto my parents roof in the middle of a thunderstorm if the downspout was clogged causing the water to overflow the stone gutters and hit the roof of the bay window below my window. Would drive me crazy, so I'd go up and unclog it. On the other side of the house where it's closest to the ground, it's about 40' or so up. On the corner that I'd be unclogging, due to the house being on the top of a hill, was the highest corner of the house probably around 50' off the ground. I'd go out barefoot without a care in the world.I'd free climb cliffs and rocks and whatnot without any harnesses or anything. (Granted, these are at most 25' or so on some of the taller cliffs I've climbed.) Done a few chimneys when spelunking with no idea how far up I was as shining a light down doesn't reach the bottom. But get on a roller coaster, and I'm freaking out like crazy on that first rise. (I love roller coasters, but that first rise always gets to me. There was one I believe it was in NJ that had signs along the way saying things like you're now as high as this or that and whatnot, naming different things.)

But anymore, I get rather nervous when climbing a ladder. Granted, this is 100% probably due to falling off my roof a couple years ago when the ladder slid out from under me as I was transitioning to the ladder from the roof causing me to come down all wrapped up in the ladder. Luckily, I didn't break anything but I was pretty sore and had trouble walking for a few months afterwards. I can't blame the trouble walking on the fall though, that was more an issue from the previous day when I was changing the oil on my car and went to stand up and my knee just completely gave out causing me to just lay on the ground for a good 10 minutes until I could attempt to start trying to move again.

And a side note on the jury duty, my boss is out today because he had to report for jury selection. He's got his fingers crossed he gets picked. Only person I know that looks forward to jury duty. He was the foreman for the last trial he was in. Learned all about how to make meth on that one. Think he's been selected 4 times now, but the defendant plead guilty for one of them so he didn't get to go. He was a bit disappointed. Think that one was actually a murder trial.

My newest acquisition has been dropped off for shipment today and should be here by the end of the week! A mint DA 18-55mm WR lens that I picked up from an ebay listing from Roberts Camera. This will pair nicely with my DA 50-200mm WR lens I picked up last summer. Though I am questioning myself if I should have picked up the DA 18-135mm WR instead for a walk-around lens. Maybe next time. (And if I do pick that one up, it lets me pair the 18-55 & 50-200 lenses with the K-7 if the kids want to borrow it.)

I've almost finished Tin Cans and Greyhounds by Clint Johnson. One of the places on my bucket list to visit is Baton Rouge where they have a Fletcher class destroyer in WWII configuration, which is what my grandfather would have served aboard. (He was on the USS Albert W. Grant @ Layte Gulf, among other places.)

To be honest, I'd like to be even more nowhere than I am, but I don't think the wife would like that. I might compromise and try my hand at building a cabin on the edge of the property with a deck to look down into the woods below. Might cheat and run power from the house to it. But it's a pipe dream that will be years before I get to it, if I ever do. (Still hoping I hit the jackpot on one of the random lottery tickets I buy so I can speed up some of these pipe dreams... lol)

That's essentially the fisherman's knot I tie. I wonder if that's how I actually tie it or if I'm just thinking in my head that I tie it slightly different than that. I don't have any cord handy on me right now to actually tie it and see if I'm doing it right or wrong.

That method of tying a bowline does look a heck of a lot easier and faster. I'll have to try and teach my youngest that way when he gets to the point where he needs to learn to tie a bowline for Scouts.

Many years ago, I picked up both my skis and boots plus a snowboard with step-in bindings and the boots to match at a local ski club here had a swap meet. I haven't been skiing or snowboarding since before kids, so it's getting close to 20 years now. I thought about going out again, but unless someone else is going to buy my lift ticket, I think I'll have to pass for now. My dad's been getting a season pass for the past several years as it costs I think less than a single lift ticket, or it might be 2, for him as he gets the "Super Senior" discount since he's over 70. He still makes it out a half dozen or so times a year. He's actually going either tomorrow morning or afternoon.

While I have done cross-country skiing a time or two in the past, and didn't really like it overly much, I think I'd rather enjoy a pair of backcountry skis. Being able to easily switch from cross-country to downhill to uphill to whatever seems like it'd be rather enjoyable. Especially if I can find/make some nice trails through the woods out back. (All the ATV trails should be good for something right?)

This reminds me of a story about my mother. She was a substitute teacher for many, many years. The district I now work in was set up a bit differently back then, but she was called late to come and cover a class at the high school. Because of the drive, she said she wouldn't be able to make it there on time and would be a little late. They said that's fine as long as she can come in as soon as possible. She got there right at the end of the pledge to hear someone throw a handful of BBs at the blackboard and the assistant principal making a hasty exit from the room as he was covering until my mom could get there. She told them, that the only way she was going to be able to do this was if they came down hard on the first person that she sent to the office.
One of the guys in the back of the class started doing Old MacDonald in a singsong voice in the back. She asked him to stop several times and then sent him to the office. He came back with something like 5 days of detention or suspension, I forget. Word spread through the students like fire and she never had another problem. After she was there for a while, the students realized she's more than willing to have fun and everything as long as they were respectful and whatnot and didn't get too carried away and could stay on task when they needed to. She ended up being one of their favorite subs and was one of the only people that would come in to cover that one particular class because no one else could handle them.

Sorry about replying to posts from a few days ago, but I've been busy and not on the forums (what am I thinking?! there's a giveaway going on. lol) and am trying to catch up. I wonder if this includes the fisherman's knot, which is essentially 2 square knots that are sort of tied as slip knots so that the two knots end up holding against each other and IIRC is supposed to be stronger than a simple square knot. (It's one I learned back when I was a Scout and what I tend to always use to join 2 ropes together.)

I'm not sure which I learned first, the fisherman's knot or a noose. I learned both in the BSA, courtesy of some older Scouts.

Sadly, due to the lack of knot tying that I tend to have, I've forgotten many of the knots I used to know. Oddly, despite almost never making one, I can do a bowline just fine thanks to that little bunny that hops up out of its hole to run around the tree and back down into his hole...

It's an excellent book. I would like to re-read it again, but I'm not sure where my copy is currently.

While all books turned into films are different from the book, this one is practically a completely different story. It's also one of my favorite Miyazaki films.

You won't be disappointed. It gets fairly regular watching in the house here, as do most Studio Ghibli films.
