Home now. Camera isn't acting up anymore, even with the Chinese battery. Could long term exposure to heat have caused a temporary electrical derpout?

The use of the doll attached to your tripod is...creative, if a bit disturbing. Lens seems interesting, to say the least! (Enjoy the free bump for your creativity.)

Try new angles. Get down low or stand on something to adjust perspective slightly, it makes for a drastic shift in some scenarios.

I'd recommend either picking up a used K-5 for cheap, or getting one of the K-30s before they run out of stock. Use the money you save (Around 300-500 USD) to buy a better lens. Bodies come and go, but glass is forever.

That's just photography. As a general rule, don't expect others to have your high(er) standards. I still don't like Instagram as a means of "Art through photography", but that's due to me seeing through the editing and realizing it's just a bad picture with Sepia or B&W conversion done. Take it as a badge of honor if you disagree with judges, that means you're pushing the envelope, rather than just accepting what's "Good".
I really don't understand why they'd disqualify for Dodging and Burning...at all. Of all the photographic editing, it's the longest lasting, most tasteful means I can think of.(My personal policy is - If it can be done with film, it's acceptable in a digital image. Typically, one doesn't develop color film into Sepia or B&W, now do we?)

"You have a great camera" "Thanks, I taught it everything it knows."
^Read that somewhere.
It's worth noting, DSLRs on the entry level are just a current "Fad" to grab in people who want to "Take Better Pictures". Canon and Nikon seem to love telling people that their deprecated tech is worthwhile, almost as though they're using the public to get rid of some of the old sensors. Canon is insanely bad for this, it's like they generated WAY too many 18MP sensors(Debuted in the 7D), and over three years passed it along to FIVE DSLRs. Nikon had a bit of a love affair with a 12MP a while back, but as of late, they're sticking to Sony and Toshiba sensors across all entry levels, removing some software restrictions with each step up, and perhaps adding better build quality.(Though it's nothing compared to Pentax, the D7100 could be smashed to bits by a K5, and the K5 would still function fully, and probably not lose too much paint.[Albeit, it might have some peeling of the rubber grip, as they tend to over time, and this would be a length process])
Honestly, if Pentax wanted to be a winner in the market, they'd revise power zoom systems, thus allowing on camera controls to adjust zoom AND focus. Surely wouldn't be too complex, just coding, as the contacts are still there in current Pentax DSLRs.

I missed a shot of lightning in front of Aurora Borealis one night because I forgot my camera...that was a really strange event, to say the least...

My adapter does this with all my lenses, strangely enough. Genuine Pentax, never caused any issues either. Just a weird manufacturing issue I suspect.

Personally, I'd consider the weather sealing of the 16-50 worth any number of (Fixable) flaws. Sharpness wide open never seems to be an issue other than in tests.(And in reality, I'd think it just makes itself a *better* portrait lens due to the sharp center, but softer edges wide open)

Pentax isn't going to announce a FF camera. Tamron is, it's going to feature the K-Mount, use Pentax technologies, and after 6 months, be rebadged and sold as Pentax.

Yes, the K-R's battery will work for the K-30, and vice versa. They've both using the D-Li109. In regards to the AA adapter, it *should* work, but don't quote me on that.
Best of luck with the new camera!

I carry my K-5 almost religiously - Though the times I manage to forget it are when the best photo ops come up it seems...(Like the double rainbow, over the river while there were no cars on the bridge, and the sky around me was crystal clear...)
The 18-135 has a bad string of reviews, however, personally, I find it's quite the nice lens. Great "Walk-around", though not the sharpest(It's a super-zoom, what do people expect?), it proves it's worth by both being WR and good enough for everyday shots. I might suggest getting a feel for it though, if you have a camera shop around you that will allow such a thing. I find it balances the weight of the K-5 remarkably well...almost feels like Pentax designed the two to be used together.
