Ah, thank you so much for the quick reply. I can push on now without buyer's remorse. Headed next to get some batteries for this thing and start practicing for this weekend. Fun, fun!

vivitar vs Pentax flash

I'm leaving tomorrow for the desert and I'm looking forward to some low light and night photos with my new K5. I'm relying on the forum here because I don't have time to learn the finer points of flash photography so I'll just ask and hopefully won't be scorned for not researching first. :)

I just bought a Vivitar flash (285-HV Flash with Zoom Thyristor) along with the Elinchrom EL-Skyport remote transmitter and receiver kit. I needed something quick and found these locally, sort of on a whim even, at a place that doesn't carry any Pentax stuff (Samy's in LA). Now that I'm home I'm researching the Pentax options and I'm wanting to know more about them.

This line on the Amazon reviews caught my eye "First of all for all K10D owners, this flash will work as intelligent remote flash controlled by your camera's flash or in combination with it. It does it simply AWESOME! You have now two flashes and possibilities are endless. For the money I ordered two of the flashed instead of one of their more expensive model and I have complete professional three point lighting solution for about $360!!! In wireless mode it supports advanced functions, allows all adjustments etc. This flash supports superb Hi Speed Sync and I mean it is superb! The flash is so precise it capable of preserving the most delicate shadows if you need it. The wide angle adapter along with white board is so nice to have handy!"

Does this mean the Pentax AF 360 FGZ has it's own radio remote control built in?

I thought this Pentax flash was out of my price range but I just spent over $225 on the Vivitar and EL-Skyport system. It's not too late for me to return this though and if I can get the same setup for roughly the same money, with built in radio remotes (I'd love to have less pieces) then I may consider just returning this to Samy's, special ordering the Pentax flash, and doing without a flash this weekend.

Thanks for helping me understand the pros and cons of the two piece system I bought compared with a Pentax solution.

No worries, buddy. Some of those acronyms aren't exactly intuitive when they're ambigous like that. But I knew what you meant.

Well, jcp5, I agree, no substitute for the manual, a book, and experience.

I've had that chart bookmarked, actually. And now when I look again I do see on *one* of the seven column headers the use of the word "value". It was easy to miss, and definitely not consistent used throughout the manual. Speaking of that chart, the legend shows the meaning of both an "x" and a checkmark but doesn't explain the "-" that also appears in two cells of the table. I'm guessing that means "Not Applicable" but I'm not sure.

I've got a handful of about 10 photography books leftover from my days when I used to shoot my F3, so I've got the "good book" suggestion covered but thanks for the tip, always room for one more in my photography library.

As far as experience I'm at about 4,000 shots taken in less than three weeks. I'm a busy boy, 'eh?

I'm just thankful Pentax has such a vibrant forum to pick up the slack where this manual leaves off--it's adequate *at best*.

Yeah, I was aware that from P we can jump to Av and Tv with the dials (which I think is clever design). I guess Sv just being a button re-assignment away from P keeps things consistent across the board.

it seems, at least in my mind, that "Hyper" means we can jump to other modes. But then what does the "v" stand for in the Av, Tv, and Sv?

..."value"?

I suppose it's anybody's guess.

If that's the case, then can it be said that P and Sv are the same thing? The only difference being in P the Sensitivity is set on the ISO button and in Sv it's set on the Rear dial?

Seems a bit redundant.

Or, am I missing something?

After a few weeks of shooting my new K5 I'm just getting my head around the K5's modes but still struggling to understand some nuances. What is the difference in the Automatic Exposure we'd get in Program Line (which I understand) and the Automatic Exposure we'd get in Sv mode? Is the exposure that adjusts automatically in Sv mode the same as what's set in Program Line?

Anvh That feature in the custom menu is only regarding using Remote with the Bulb, not finger pressing the shutter release.

...unless I'm missing something?

Perfect, I'm headed to Bel Air Camera as soon as they open. Problem solved.

So many replies in such a short time, it's nice to have joined such an active community of Pentax users. I'm certainly digging my new K5, as someone who'll be taking it alpine climbing I really value its weight and size. Is it true that it's the only APS-C on the market that's truly weather proof? I know, of course, Canon and Nikon both have weather proof full frames but am I right in that the K5 is the only weather proof cropped sensor?

Philoslothical, I tried the only remote in my house, to my big screen TV which I just tether to my laptop for streaming and DVD action. This one didn't work. I'm going to try some of these other ideas, the Canon remote that calsan mentioned sounds like it could do the trick. I'm in LA and expected Samy's (our largest local camera retail chain) to carry the Pentax remote and was surprised that they don't. Surely they'll have the Canon one.

Philoslothical, ThonasDay, and others who asked about the batteries: the Pentax branded weather proof remote I bought comes with the battery already soldered to the chip. The manual states that the battery isn't a user servicable part but I took it apart anyway.

rawr, I messed around with Interval settings in hope that I'd figure out a way to set a long exposure. Interval doesn't include parameters for length of shot and Interval is not an option when in Bulb mode.

Tonto, that's a workable solution. How do I program the shutter to stay open after the shutter button is released?

I'm a little surprised with all the bells & whistles it's got we can't just program how long we want the exposure to be.

Baffling, really.

I just got my K5 a few days ago. The Remote WP that I also ordered came in today but it doesn't seem to work. I set the drive mode to Remote and the blinking light comes on but when I hit the button on the remote nothing happens and there's nothing visible (to my naked eye) on the front beam (LED?) on the remote.

Anyway, Pentax is going to give me a full refund so that's not my problem. Now my problem is that I'm leaving in the morning for a week of shooting night shots up in Big Sur and I don't know if there's a way to take long (30 minutes+) exposures without a remote.

Can somebody tell me if there's a way to do this without holding the button the whole time?
