Within one year the leg locks on my $60 Dolica tripods broke, at the worst possible time, ten minutes in to a 2 hour event I was shooting for friends. Never again I said. Bought a Feisol and am very happy with it. Wish I would have gotten it to begin with and skipped that experience.

Any photographers in/around Seattle looking to expand their portfolio? I'm shooting an event a month from now and need another photographer. The gig is unpaid but comes with perks that make it worth it. Challenges include low light, stage lighting, fast moving performers, and tight spaces. For the aspiring pro with some event experience it's a great opportunity.

Message me for more info and include an email address. Include a link to portfolio if you have one.

Good eye. I forgot to set the white balance before shooting so the AWB was going crazy shooting into the lights. I tried to fix in post but it was too tedious. I'll never make that mistake again :hmm:

I shot entirely at 10mm because the space was so tight.
From the balcony I came up with a way of using a regular tripod as a makeshift jib. I put two legs down straight together, like a mono pod, then shortened the third leg and pulled it out wide, and used it as a handle. I'll post a short video of that if there's any interest, worked pretty well considering they were moving so fast, so close, and in dark/harsh light.
Also used a Vivitar viewfinder, and Dolica pistol grip.

Here is a short promo video I shot for a trapeze school here in Seattle, at one of their shows.

https://vimeo.com/98001348

Most shots were taken with a K-01 and Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. A few shots were taken with a Contour Roam and Canon Vixia HFR20. Edited in Cyberlink PowerDirector 12 on a home built PC.

Any questions or comments are welcome!

Italy trip, need your advice

I recently spent two weeks in Italy, had a blast, shooting every day and used less than 80 gb. Shot in raw, no video. But I also had plenty of extra cards on hand just in case.

I don't have any experience with iTouch but have used the Mobi Wi-Fi cards successfully. They send images to your device wirelessly if you can't wait to get home to start sharing.

As for weather, it can't be that hard to look up average temperature and precipitation history online, if you're that worried about it. Earthquakes... seriously? How often do those happen and how would you prepare for one anyway?

You're taking both cameras? In that case put a standard zoom on the k5 and take the 15mm and 100mm primes for the K-01. That will give you lots of options without having to change lenses all the time. The 28 is pretty close to the 35 and if it's raining, you'll be glad you have the weather sealed kit lens on a weather sealed camera covering both those focal lengths and more.

I'd just take one camera (and several lenses) but that's me, I prefer to travel light :) and fast..

New to forum a DSLR with few questions.

Hi Chris, hope this helps answer your questions--

Cameras. Those are both great cameras! I've had the original K-5 for years and it's never held me back. Everything I've read about the K-50 seems like it will meet your needs just fine. It's hard to find a weather sealed DSLR under $800 and the Pentax K-50 is well under. It's the most bang for your buck.

Lenses. For wildlife, you want the PENTAX DA 55-300mm. It's a great lens and it's surprisingly affordable. The 18-135 is a great do-everything, all-purpose lens, but will limit you when shooting wildlife 100 yards away. You'll want a bit more reach. The ability to go up to 300 is just awesome and so fun to play with. Will work great for sports as well.
A good companion to the 55-300mm is the PENTAX 18-55 WR. Don't be fooled by the phrase "kit lens," it's totally legit. Those two lenses together will give you all the range you need. Or get the 18-135 as you suggested and have some overlap.

Filters. If you're worried about lots of dust, mud, and other crap flying up at you while you shoot, then get a UV filter for protecting the front element of the lens. But honestly it won't affect image quality, just saves the lens a little bit of wear. Using a lens hood (all the time) will save your lens more often, and it comes with the lens :)

Tripod. Hands down the best tripods for the money are Dolica. They spend no money on advertising but are top quality. Google "Dolica AX620B100". You can upgrade the ballhead to a pistol grip later if you want but the one that comes with it is perfectly fine for getting started with a tripod.

Keep your K1000 as a second camera. Put the 28mm lens on it and set it to black and white for family fun.

70mm f2.4limited or samyang 85mm f1.4 for portraits?

Get the 70mm limited. Having autofocus, with quick shift manual focusing, is super useful! One of my all time favorite lenses and worth every penny. I don't have the Samyang but other legacy glass, manual focus, and I just don't enjoy shooting it as much.

Macro or Wide Angle first?

Great advice from Hendrickdk.

I think every photographer needs a serious wide angle lens, they're so much fun to use and produce stunningly dramatic images. The Sigma 10-20 mm zoom is also fantastic. Not weather sealed but the kit zooms are perfectly adequate for nasty weather, and sigma's build quality is excellent.

By contrast I rarely use my macro lenses. They're fun and useful when needed, I just don't find closeups that exciting, and I don't have the time to set up elaborate macro shoots.

I'd get a good wide angle lens (15mm or wider) first. Eventually you'll have both :)

First Lens (Need advice)

Have you used legacy glass and modern glass and compared them? I have, and find myself ALWAYS reaching for the modern lenses. So much easier to get the focus and exposure when you don't have a lot of time too frame the shot! If you have a modern DSLR, might as well enjoy all it has to offer. I guess everyone is different and maybe you have more skill than I focusing a moving subject on the fly. It can be hard! But the cameras you listed can do it very fast and very well ;) IF you have modern glass. I'll manual focus in certain situations like low light, buy still, AF is a wonderful tool that you shouldn't be without.

Why get a camera that powerful, then go out of your way to not use some of its capabilities?

For lenses... Pentax's DA and FA limiteds are incredible quality, small, lightweight, and one of the main reasons to invest in a Pentax system. They also hold their value, but you won't want to sell them. These are my faves and recommended to start:

FA 43 Ltd.
DA 70 Ltd.

And for wide angle it depends on what you like to shoot. Everyone needs a wide angle lens!
DA 21 which is maybe a little more versatile, or
DA 15 -more wide, more dramatic

I also use zooms and can recommend some of those as well but for just getting started, the primes are fantastic.

K5+? for vegas trip

Francis- You obviously have figured out how to get brilliant photos at the wide end--don't give up on the narrow end! Vegas has lots of great characters and you need a little bit of reach to get them. Bring a medium telephoto, like the 70mm Ltd. and just play around with it, I think you'll be really surprised. Great for capturing faces and details you won't be able to get with a 35mm. Useful in nature, too! And it will challenge you a bit, giving you a different perspective to experiment with. I fell in love with the 70mm focal length on my trip to Italy and take it everywhere now. Especially when traveling with friends, I get intimate portraits from a distance they don't even know I'm shooting.

Re-purposing the K20D (but not as a bookend)

I was inspired to try this with my K-01 and am really enjoying it. With mirrorless you get the bonus of seeing the image in BW live view. Also can set the aspect ratio to 1:1 which has been awesome, since I'm mostly shooting street and portraits, and sharing to Instagram. No cropping! :-)

Also no viewfinder, obviously, on this camera but I can't help but to say #poormansLeica

Thanks again Arjay Bee

Get the Sigma 10-20! I have it and also the Limited 15mm prime. Both are fantastic but I prefer the versatility of the Sigma zoom and also the wider angle--down at 10mm you can get some really dramatic shots! That's where all the fun is. Still really nice to be able to zoom to 20 without changing lenses.

The only reason to get the 15mm Limited over the Sigma is if size and weight is an issue, but since you already have the DAL 18-55, I'm guessing you're ok with chunky zooms.

Here's an example of what you can do with the Sigma 10-20mm:

The sequence at 1:32 is STUNNING!
I would add one more to your list of what makes the K-01 great for time lapse:
It's square shape means the sides are flat which is nice for setting on a flat surface without a tripod (not so common in the wilderness as in town.) Basically gives you an easy vertical option for shooting.

Whoa! Awesome shots dane.dog. Be careful with increasing sharpness... it tends to make an outline around the image which can make the subject look "photoshopped" onto the background.
