Pentax 18-250 is a 18-180!

Both pictures were taken from the same distance, so it should not make much difference. I will post the picture with focus at infinity as soon as I come back home

Pentax 18-250 is a 18-180!

Hi guys,
While trying my Pentax 18-250 lens, I found out that the advertised focal length does not correspond with the actual focal length. The lens is something like a 18-180 (which is still quite amazing, but not what I paid for...).
Here are some quick and dirty shots that prove my claim. All pictures are taken with a tripod, f/8, about 5m far from the subject. The height of the crackers box is about 30cm.
The first one is taken with a Quantaray 100-300mm (which is a rebadged Sigma lens) with a focal length of 250mm.
The second shot is taken with the Pentax 18-250 at the same focal length, while the third is again from the Quantaray but at 200mm. Note that the size of the subject in the third picture is still bigger than the size of the subject taken with the Pentax lens
At 100mm the differences between the two lenses are not so evident.

Of course the advertised focal length of the Quantaray lens may be wrong, that's why I'd like to hear from other 18-250 owners if they can reproduce my measurements.

I did not alter the Exif data in the pictures and I can provide more examples if anybody asks.

New Pentax SMC 18-250 problem

Don't worry :) You've been so kind answering me so quickly :)
Anyway, I cleaned *VERY* well the contacts of both the lens and the camera and now it did not give me the "select focal length" problem and the lens name appears almost always in the exif metadata. I wrote "almost always" because it appears on something like 80% of the pictures, and I didn't change the lens taking all of them... weird...

I cleaned the contacts but it seems strange to me that it is the problem. The contacts were clean and none of the pictures I took reported the lens name correctly but all the other metadata were fine. I often change lens so if it is just a contact problem it should not show up every time. Moreover, if the camera does not recognise the lens, I just switch it off and on and it works. Not very bad, but being a new lens (10 days old) I expect it to work properly...

I wrote to Pentax. Here is their answer:

Sounds strange to me, anyway.

So, is there anyone with this lens who was able to produce images with the lens name in the metadata?

Hi guys,
I bought the new Pentax 18-250 lens for my K10D a couple of days ago. I am not sure it is working well, so I want to hear from some of you that have the same lens if yours is like mine.

Sometimes when I switch on the camera - let's say once every 30 - my K10D does not recognize the lens and asks me for the focal length.

When I look at RAW or JPEG metadata, both in Lightroom and with exiftool, the lens name is not shown: Lightroom just says "unknown lens", while exiftool reports

Code:

Lens Type : K,M Lens

Lens Codes : 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

This happens for all the photos I take with this lens. If I use my Pentax 18-55 lens, exiftools reports

Code:

Lens Type : smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL

Lens Codes : 28 d6 15 82 84 46 90 66 74 78 7b 38 01 3b 50 03

I use a K10D with firmware 1.3, Lightroom 1.3.1 and exiftool 7.13.

Do you think I have to send the lens back to Pentax? :(

Thank you for your help

Hello everybody! I'm Mito, aka Paolo, and I'm an amateur photographer who likes to take a lot of shots with his Pentax K10D :)

This is not my first camera, and not even my first Pentax. The first camera I had was a 1978 Pentax MX -- I'm not that old, it is my father's camera :)
I had a lot of fun using that camera with the 50mm f/1.7 and the 200mm f/4, all manual. Then I bought a Canon EOS 3000V with a 28-90mm zoom. It's a very cheep film camera, but autofocus and auto exposure mode (or at least Av mode, which is the one I prefer) make it much more usable in all the circumstances in which you don't have all the time to take a full manual shot. I also bought a non-reflex camera, the sony DSC-U30, which is the one I always take with me when I cannot bring my reflex.

Then I bought a new Pentax K10D with the kit lens. The Pentax was my choice because I liked a lot the features of the camera body for the price and also because I could continue to use the old Pentax lenses I have.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Cheers!

Mito
