K-5 to K-3 Upgrade / Focus or SR Issue?

Hey dubyam,

You have described the same issues I feel I have. I think it will take a little while to adjust. With the K5 I was comfortable shooting ISO100-400 on a cloudy day, whereas with the K3, I found that I needed to be between 400-800 to get the shutter speed high enough to get photos that weren't blurred. Hopefully with time I can improve technique (steadier hands?) and get the ISO back down to around 100.

K-5 to K-3 Upgrade / Focus or SR Issue?

I've just upgraded from my trusty K-5 to a second hand K-3 (very good condition, looking at the body etc) and haven't yet had much time to stretch its legs. While further testing is required, from what I feel so far, it seems the shake reduction on the K-3 isn't working at all, or the focus is off, or both. I haven't had enough time yet to do detailed testing, but took some photos:

135mm 1/125 f4.5 ISO 200: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

135mm 1/50 f4.5 ISO 100: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

50mm 1/8 f4.5 ISO 100: Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

50mm 1/25 f4.5 ISO 100 : Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online.

I can hear the shake reduction motor when in bulb mode with the shutter release depressed, so I'm guessing its a focus thing? I did a reset to start with and assume that the focus adjustment configuration is a per-lens setting (based on serials?).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you.

I had a feeling it could be just as you said. Guess I'll have to learn to live with it :)

Thought I would check the metadata to see if anything else changed. Seems the CPU and DSP firmware was also upgraded when they checked the camera.

Before:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.11.23.15
CPU Firmware Version: 1.11.23.15

After:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.12.23.20
CPU Firmware Version: 1.12.23.20

With new firmware update:

DSP Firmware Version: 1.13.23.23
CPU Firmware Version: 1.13.23.23

What version are you guys using? (PhotoME is great!)

Took it to Pentax Forums in Tokyo. They told me the camera was backfocusing (not the lens) and they changed some software settings in the camera - not the fine adjustment. Also not the firmware - they said "Deeper than firmware"

Seems to have resolved the issue though I have yet to fully experiment. The focus chart test are showing up correctly however, and I do not need to use fine adjustment for my Tamron 90mm macro anymore.

I would then have to pay for shipping and possibly more tax when it arrives back in Japan. Ill show it to Pentax and see what they say.

Pentax Japan have told me they do not replace lenses. Sending it back to B&H would cost more.

Looks like I will have to do just that. Haven't even had the lens a day and it needs to be sent off for repairs. Not much going for Pentax quality control these days.

I have the exact same issue with the same lens I just received today. I posted over at dpreview. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the situation.
