I¨am pretty sure that the shutter is stepless in auto mode. The 645N manual shutter speed can be set at half stop at service. I had it done on mine. Otherwise the NII is the best bet as it has it as a custom function. It also makes possible to shoot only 15 frames per roll avoiding film flatness issues....

The Minolta 7000 was the disruptive event that hurt all the other manufacturers. Pentax (along with the rest except Minolta), after beeing a pioneer in AF SLR, had at that stage apparently decided that AF was not going to happen anytime soon, and released the very expansive A-series of manual focus lenses. At the same time causual SLR users went to more advanced P&S cameras. Pentax followed as they were among the most popular SLR brands. They were very sucessful with their zoom P&S but their SLR line suffered and never really recovered.
Canon was probably hurt the most; Minolta effectively killed the FD mount and the T90 had a short life. The T80 is probably the biggest flop i SLR history. Canon apparently thought that AF was strictly for P&S so they did away with all manual settings, and advetised that the camera displayed none of the confusing numbers other cameras did. The EOS system was quickly developed and the rest is history....

Not once in 45 years have I missed a rear screen. All the images below where shot from ground level and I had no problems with an optical finder (the last one due to strong wind). Actually, the first three were shot with a camera that didnt have a rear sceen at all (film). If you prefer to use a rear screen for your phoptography, a DSLR is simply the wrong choice. |

You should manual focus on a light source at infinity via the screen in live view to assure sharp photos. Most lenses focus past infinity, and infinity on all lenses is dependent on temperature.

This is just semantics. Like saying Pentax cameras werent "real" pentaxes when they where made by Asahi Optical; only when they were made by Pentax corporation. Pentax is just not a brand name in the sense that the only thing Ricoh bought was the rights to the name. Pentax cameras are still designed by the same engineers, asembled by the same workers, and made in the same factories regardless of who actually owns it. It is a product line that continues and develops under different owners.
There are plenty of examples were brands are reduced to just brand names. Pentax isnt one of them....

I once possesed the production numbers by lens series. I don¨t have them anymore or remember the exact numbers. Once posted on the old PDML list. I do remember that they made about 2 million F-series lenses which is quite a lot considering this series was rather short lived...

Pentax have already been in dialogue with retired engineers. In addition they have something that look like production ready designs that never made it to the marked. This is one of them:
BTW The camera have a traditional interface that in addition provides means to set aperture from the body for lenses without aperture rings.
The mock-up has been shown on events recently. |

The LX is not all mechanical. I believe that the MX is more likely starting point for a mechanical SLR; the LX is way too expensive and complex. No need to reinvent the wheel. New electronics is needed and spot metering option is desireable.

Summer came on Monday with18 degrees Celsius (now gone with 5 degrees and rain). A boat trip to a beach hardly anyone knows about. Generally you get to have beaches for yourselves in this part of the world. There are plenty of them. This one is accessible via boat unless you want to walk for half a day from the nearest road.

Take into account what it cost to make a complete new system from ground up; lenses, lens mount and cameras. It is enough to break any company if it fails commercially. I guess it takes a decade before the company can draw any benefit from the fact that mirrorless cameras are simpler to assemble than DSLR's.
