New K-series DSLR under development to be exhibited

Actually, that side of the camera looks quite identical to the K-1.

Even the two screws to the right of the card door are positioned the same way, the card door is not only the same size, but the same shape and has the same recessed finger grip thingy. The remote connector has the same rubber plug on it - and there is the one slight difference between the K-1 and this unnamed newcomer: card door and remote plug don't align the same way on the right side as they do on the K-1.

The hand grip on the front and the thumb grip on the back are more than inspired by the ones found on the K-1.

Both cameras differ hugely on the top plate, where the various control wheels are located. Quite obviously, since the LCD, the control knob's layout and all that stuff has changed, not to mention the pentaprism cover. No wonder, being an APS-C camera, the pentaprism hiding under this cover is much smaller than the one found in the full-frame K-1.

Yes, it was quite common to early copies sold in 2016. Mine had that failure too, stuck in "M" mode. Warranty repair solved that, since then the camera is as perfect as it is (and no, I won't downgrade to the K-1 II).

Sigma stops K-Mount support

Sigma stopped all Pentax support the moment the K-1 came out. Since that very moment, they just sold off old stock, but no new lenses were made.

A stupid and regrettable decision, since Sigma was the only lens maker that made lenses with optical lens stabilizer that work with the K-Mount.

With long focal lengths that's something you'd want to have, since the IBIS does not stabilize the viewfinder image.

And Pentax cameras do support optically stabilized lenses since the K10D.

As a reason "low revenue" was given, but that was created by Sigma themselves. Until the K-1 came out, they had several lenses in their portfolio, that were of relatively little use for Pentax photographers, as for instance the 12-24. On APS-C, Sigma had two wider lenses, the 10-20 and the 8-16, both in K-Mount. The K-1 is the first Pentax since the days of film that could use the 12-24's potential, because that's a full-frame lens. In 2016, a new version of that lens was released - no K-Mount.
I had to get a used version of the 12-24, couldn't buy a new one since there wasn't any. And Pentax' 15-30 quite obviously is no alternative if ultra wide angle is what you're after.

Sigma never pointed out that their use of optical stabilization on the K-Mount was something noteworthy; there are lots of photographers around who don't even know that optical stabilization does work with Pentax bodies. And it gives users the choice of both systems, which I deem the best possible solution.

This is utterly stupid and very bad marketing. Yes, Sigma did react in a very customer-oriented way with the firmware and mount upgrade program for several lenses that created mechanical and software problems with the K-1, but instead of building on this, they just ignore customers.

I own and use several Sigma lenses, because there are no alternatives made by Pentax and because they're economically viable. The aforementioned 12-24, and on the other end of the focal range, the "Bigma", the 50-500.

> Just out of curiosity, how many of the participants on this thread have purchased a Sigma product for Pentax, new, in the last five years. Don't be bashful.

I've got the 12-24 used, since they didn't sell it new anymore. It still has an aperture ring.

The 50-500 I've bought new, getting one of the last copies made.

Back in APS-C days, beginning in 2008, I've bought the following lenses, all new:
8-16, 10-20, 17-70(OS), 70-200/2.8, 70-300/3.5-5.6(OS) (not in that chronological order, though)

Of these lenses the 70-200 and the 70-300 can be used on the K-1, the 70-200 unfortunately is a bit soft, it presumably needs some "recentering" or somewhat.

Oh, and the "walk-around" lens I curretly use most of the time is a 24-70, also made by Sigma. That one I bought used, out of a whim for less than 100 EUR, but it works like a charm (though it doesn't inspire trust due to it's plastic mount).

So, at least I do qualify as a "Sigma-on-Pentax" user.

DA 16-45 on the K-1?

The DA16-45 is an APS-C lens, thus not really useful on the K-1.

To get the same image angle on the K-1, you'd need a 24-75 lens.

For unfathomable reasons, Pentax decided to create a 28-105mm lens instead of an equivalent to the DA16-85, which would have been a 24-128. The four missing millimetres at the wide end are essential.

For real wide angle, you'd better get the Sigma 12-24 (in contrast to the DA12-24 the Sigma is a "full frame" lens), or a prime like the 11mm irix or the new Samyang 10/3.5 (the widest rectilinear ultra-super-duper wideangle lens for "full frame"). For reasons of sheer and utter stupidity*, Sigma ceased production of the 12-24 in Pentax mount around the time the K-1 came out.

*) No, that's not marketing. That's a dumb decision. The K-1 is the first camera since the end of the film era that actually can use the lens, and they quit making it -- after ten years of selling this lens for uses below it's potential on APS-C.

The FA24-90 doesn't rotate it's front lens, and that could well be considered a "film-era" zoom lens, as it still has an aperture ring.

The FA100-300, the A28-80 and the A35-70 as well are "rotators".

ME Super not rewinding?

That's really not necessary. The problem is not rewinding, the problem is winding. And that can be checked without ruining a roll of film. Check the small window below the forwarding lever. If the orangish lines don't move, the film doesn't move.

You'll just have to check this when spooling in a new film, the first few movements of the forwarding lever (after closing the camera's back) must result in activity in the window. If it doesn't, re-open the camera's back and try to correct the film's insertion into the winding spool.

It's not that difficult, I managed that as a teenager, when the ME Super was spanking new.

The ME Super has a small window below the film forwarding lever (on the right hand side of the camera's body), where you can check the film movement. This helps with loading film correctly.

It is possible to damage the shutter with too much sunlight, so MLU isn't the best thing to do when pointing the camera directly at the unfiltered sun. Even the iris inside your lenses can be ruined.

Does Pentax K-Mount DA 18-270mm work well with Pentax K-1 Mark II

The camera won't hinder you operating it in FF mode, but the image will be severely vignetted, so "cropping" to APS-C either in postprocessing or in-camera seems to be the most sensible solution.

You might gain a slightly larger image than APS-C, but not by much.

Besides, the optical quality of that lens won't be as good to do credit to the K-1.

Most zoom lenses degrade with high zoom factors, the 18-270 is a 15x zoom lens.

More "professional" zoom lenses don't use zoom factors above 3 or 4. The 70-200 range is 3x, the 28-105 is slightly below 4x.

It seems to be impossible to get a f/2.8 zoom with a zoom factor higher than 3.

There is a 10x zoom lens on the market which is some kind of an exception to the zoom factor/crap ratio, that is the "bigma", a 50-500 zoom, which in some markets can still be obtained in Pentax K lens mount. That one does perform decently on the K-1, and it even comes with an optical image stabilizer. Yes, that works with the K-1 (and all other SDM-capable Pentax bodies since the K10D).

More about the "bigma" can be found here Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
and here Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO OS HSM Review - Review | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Be careful if you obtain an older copy, since that lens is one of those likely to scratch the K-1's body. On newer copies, Sigma replaced the bayonet ring with an updated construction.

This lens will give you the most "bang for the buck", but it comes with some weight - it's slightly heavier than the HD Pentax-D FA 70-200/2.8

Would like some lens compatibility info please

The question was about the 70-300, a completely different (and much slower) lens.

If uncertain, check the outer diameter of the lens' bayonet mount. It should not be larger than the corresponding K-1's bayonet mount.

HSM is Sigma's wording for SDM. That's the same, just different marketing buzzwords. Sigma's remark about compatibility refers to very old Pentax DSLRs, that is, those made befor the K10D (which introduced the necessary additional contacts in the lens mount).

With some few exceptions (as for instance the 70-200/2.8 boriscleto was referring to) those lenses do work without problems.

Sigma made a somewhat newer variant of your 70-300/4.5-5.6 that includes an optical stabilizer. That lens works fine with the K-1 and is small enough at the mount side not to scratch the K-1's body. Since your lens is quite closely related to that lens, it can be presumed that your lens will not cause scratching problems.

Be aware that the 70-300 comes from a time where Sigma had massive quality spread problems.

Two copies of the same lens will show massive different results, one copy may be perfect, the other one's lousy as a beer bottle.

My 70-300 with OS is one of the fortunate examples that are surprisingly good (especially given the laughable price this lens can be got in new condition - just 170 EUR), hopefully yours will be in the same range.

An interesting addition would be a similar comparison of a K-1 with pre-1.50 firmware and a K-1 with 1.50 firmware, as there are some hints that the update might have improved things.

Lots of tedious work, I'm well aware ...

I do wear glasses, but maybe we differ in our kind of visual impairment. Being short- or nearsighted is something completely different from being farsighted (that's the one that usual comes with age).

Could it be that the kind of glare you describe is being caused by your glasses? What happens if you use glasses with a non-reflective coating?

Besides that: Your idea of user-settable brightness for the LED backlight used for the viewfinder information sounds like a pretty good idea and should not be too difficult to implement.

The camera already dims the brightness in low-light situations, so the hardware is present. Just checked that with my K-1 -- the brightness dims noticeably when I darken the lens by placing a hand in front of it.

Wait a moment.

Have you noticed this specific behaviour (viewfinder information being to dim) just with your camera, or is that something you notice on other cameras too?

Were it the first case, it could be a defect, which in turn would explain that there haven't been many (if any) similar complaints to yours.

K-1 SD Card Hardware

What leads you to this curious assumption? Are you talking about the camera's connection to a PC, thus using the camera as a card reader?

That's completely unrelated to the way the camera itself accesses the SD cards.

And, no, neither of the SD-card slots is an UHS-II slot. The slots are different, number 1 has two "double contact" springs instead of only single contact spring as numer 2, but this is a mere manufacturing difference, due to the different mechanical properties of the slots. Both might be mounted on the same PCB (printed circuit board), one lying flat on it's surface, the other one with long standoffs and longer "pins".

That's all.

Besides, the camera's write speed (which is limited by the speed the sensor can be read) is much lower than what a decent UHS-1 SD card can deliver.

That the sensor's the "bottleneck" here can be seen when comparing the frame rate achievable with a Nikon D810, which uses the same sensor.

I'm afraid though, that the loss of infinity focus when tilting might still be a limitation, at least for some applications.

K-1 Sensor Artculation

Yes, that would be possible, but somewhat complicated, and you'd lose the ability to focus to infinity with anything but the sensor's edges.

That's somewhat different to what optical bench cameras do. When they tilt the sensor (film, that is), they rotate it around a horizontal or vertical axis that runs through the sensor's centre, thus moving one half of the sensor back from the lens but the other half toward it. The axis of rotaion of the sensor remains in the focal plane.

Your concept would mean a rotation around one of the edges, thus moving the whole sensor back and only the edge around which the sensor is being rotated remaining in focal plane.

Interesting as the idea is, I'm afraid it would be somewhat complicated to achieve, because you'd have to implement four separate axes of rotation (lower/upper edge and left/right edge, though but one of each pair would be used for obvious reasons). That would add to the camera's depth, because all of this would have to happen behind the current plane of movement for the sensor (towards the photographer), thus making the camera even deeper (or fatter) than the K-1 already is.

But having the sensor tilt through the focal plane shutter would also be highly complicated and critical, beginning that the aperture of the shutter would have to be much larger than the usual 24x36mm to accomodate the sensor's outer dimensions ...

That doesn't seem feasible either.

Another approach would be tilting the combined shutter/sensor assembly, here the severest constraint would be the mirror's mechanics which would impede the sensors upper edges' movement towards the lens. That problem might be solved by increasing the dimensions of the mirror box. With such a construction, I doubt that it would be possible to use the tilt mechanism for image stabilization (due to the severely increased mass by adding the shutter) and ... I'm afraid that the resulting camera would be somewhat in the dimensions of the Pentax 67. Good to throw at a stampeding elephant herd ...

Maybe sensor tilt would be something where those evil mirrorless cameras are definitively at an advantage.

Until then, I just use my Samyang 24TS.

So, the major difference is a sligthly different AWB and ... the MK II's image being slightly more blurry (compare the texture on the two armchairs in, say the ISO6400 comparison shots).

And the strange violet tinge the MKII shows in the low-light dynamic range tests.

Maybe Lee should have used a fixed WB preset instead of AWB?

I've stopped using AWB 'bout 15 years ago. Never missed it since.

And I've yet to find a reason to shell out more than 500 bucks to "upgrade" my K-1. No, I'm definitively not impressed.

Lens corrections-In camera or in Lightroom

Well, in-camera lens correction works for just the few lenses that come with embedded lens correction profiles.

For the majority of lenses out there, that won't help.

LR on the other hand uses lens correction profiles you can create yourself, using the lens profile generator. You have to print a specific test target and take a certain amount of images of that target with the lens you want to profile.

The result is an individual profile of the individual lens you've used, not a generic one-size-fits-all profile that is incapable of compensating for variations across individual copies of lenses.

Thus such a profile is to be preferred to the profiles that come with LR, given, of course, that you've been meticulous when creating the profile.
