No crusade. I'm not advocating any action. This whole time I've been speaking for myself. I've been quite clear about that. Also, go back to my very first words. I've already put this in perspective.

Anyway, you anti-K01 people are exhausting me. Your approval of Johnston's behavior is predicated entirely on your reflexive and unfounded dislike of the camera. This is my last comment on the matter.

This is where I disagree. His prerogative as an ethical adult writing about cameras is to give all brands equal coverage. Doesn't like it. He should stand up and say so. Why hide?

1. I wasn't bugging him. I sent a simple short comment, nothing rude or controversial - my second in two months. When he pointedly didn't publish it, I tried to ask again, BUT HE HAD ALREADY BANNED ME.

2. He's so busy, yet he has time to trumpet the X-pro1 AND write a long form article about a gallery show. Your logic doesn't hold. Also, the camera was announced two months ago, during which time he's published dozens of articles - many about competing cameras.

Are you serious? Talking about cameras is his vocation. Among photographers you don't say it's just a camera. He is stubbornly going out of his way to ignore the K-01. Otherwise he would have published my comment and not banned me instead. It's pretty self-evident. HE'S the one making a big deal of this, not me. I'm just pointing that out.

I would guess that Pentax would rather he say something than act as if the camera doesn't exist and stonewall his readers' requests. Plus he made this decision BEFORE he had handled it or seen any results.

K-01 meets all those markers.

Omitting an opinion to please a sponsor? Isn't that the definition of a hack?

I suppose I should have said "shouldn't". Rhetoric! Of course we don't expect a mention of every P&S or every entry-level DSLR, but mirrorless is de riguer right now. Every offering except the k-01 has been mentioned, even profiled. Once you cover the field like that, fair play demands that all such cameras get equal treatment, at least as news items. It's journalistic ethics. Would you be cool if he completely ignored the NEX-7 or X-pro1 while trumpeting everything else? I'm sure you'd find that curious. And curiosity is what's behind my complaint, not entitlement.

Reichmann is a notorious grouch. I expected more from Johnston.

Once again, I'm not talking about what I want, I'm talking about Johnston being a professional.

And you keep using the word "review". We all know he doesn't do formal reviews, but he does mention products as they come out. As a nod to fairness, to his readers, to Pentax (one of his advertisers), could we at least get a mention? That's not exactly an indenture. I guess you need to use extreme words to defend an extreme position.

My point is that a photo editor who takes money from his public (that includes me) can't arbitrarily decide not to show interest. And it's not that there won't be a review, it's that there is no mention whatsoever. Nada. Zilch. That doesn't strike you as strange?

And to me it's screamingly obvious why they do. (Sorry, I'm hogging the thread.)

It's really not that different from other cameras. I'm using it daily much as I would other digital cameras I've owned. Many of its so-called failings are shared by other cameras in its class. Many of the complaints about the K-01 have been pulled from thin air.

What are the two most important things we want in a camera? IQ and lens choice. Then we balance that against price. Shouldn't that make the K-01 pretty compelling?

It's not about me. I was at pains to say not a big deal in the larger sense. And I will continue to enjoy the K-01.

But, a photographic publication ignoring a high-end camera is not a neutral act - it's negligence. Johnston has a responsibility to his readers, many of whom are Pentax users, to rise above his personal beefs. You shouldn't defend someone's professional failings by calling him "a good guy" - the world doesn't work that way. Once again, I don't care if he doesn't like the camera, but I'm interested to know why.

All these things we're hashing out in this thread could have been addressed at his site among himself and his readers. What's the harm in that? Why avoid the discussion? A little controversy, a little philosophizing - why not? Instead we have this aggressive, politburo-like attempt at erasure.

Is that your position? That the K-01 isn't a photographic tool? Because I can prove otherwise.

K-01 IQ is a couple of levels above the GF1. I know this from personal experience.

Not so sure about that - he's posted pix that were shot using the screen.

You're joking, right? The D800 & 5Diii aside, the K-01 is exactly on the level of the others with a few advantages - better IQ than the Oly, better lens choice than the NEX-7, much cheaper than the XPro1.

Whether a major photo editor personally likes something or not, he should act like an adult and say SOMETHING. I don't care if he pans it, but at least bring it into the discussion.

I don't know if this is important in the large scheme of things, but it will be of interest to the community here.

Does anyone here read The Online Photographer? It's been one of my favorite photo websites for the last 5 or 6 years - the prototype of the perfect clearinghouse for all things photographic. Shooting advice, gear news, humor, current events, book reviews, biographies. The editor, Michael Johnston, could very well be the best pure writer working on the web in the photo realm. Lately, though, the site has kind of lost its way. More and more stories about Johnston's personal life, off-topic stuff on cars, food, coffee, music. Not that I really minded. Like I said he's a great writer.

The most curious recent development, though, at least for the people here, is his absolute refusal to mention the K-01. Nothing about the announcement back in February and not a peep since. All the other major releases have been covered, some quite lavishly: the D800, the XPro1, the Nex-7, the Oly EM-5, the 5Diii, the Sigmas. A few of us have asked Johnston about the K-01 via the comment threads with no response, so it's not like he's unaware of interest in the camera.

Today he announced with fanfare the X-Pro1 is now available through B&H, so I sent a short comment wondering again why no mention of the K-01. He refused to post it. (Johnston moderates all comments before they get posted.) So I sent another (by now I was a little exasperated) and he seems to have blocked my URL. Very strange. Feels like an over-the-top reaction to defend a rather extreme editorial choice. Like they said about Watergate: It's not the crime it's the cover-up.

On his blog, Johnston solicits donations and subscriptions. One would expect an obligation from him to treat all brands equally. Also he gets a cut of gear sold through B&H. You'd think he'd want his Pentax lens-owning readers to have the chance to buy the K-01 through his site.

Anyway, not a huge deal, but puzzling.

It's worth mentioning that the K-01 lists for $450 less than the other two cameras. Plus adapter cost.

Or do you have money to burn?

It sounds like you are one of the must-have-EVF crowd (not that there's anything wrong with that). If that's the case, why even consider the K-01? It's too bad because the K-01 makes marvelous images and would be a perfect fit for the lenses you already own & without the adapter kludge.

Happy purchasing.

Post your K-01 Lens AF speed here

Most of the time I use single point AF - half-press on the subject or the desired focus plane (i.e. a crack in the sidewalk in anticipation of someone walking towards it), then recompose and shoot (or in the latter case, recompose, WAIT and shoot). Definitely not perfect, but the failings are mine, not the camera's.

I mainly use 3 primes (21mm, 40mm, 70mm) - so far no speed issues. Occasionally, the camera gets stymied by a blank wall or distant sky, but no more than other CDAF cameras I've owned. Then I aim at a point of contrast or the horizon to get focus. With my 200mm MF, it's focus peaking all the way (which has a bit of a learning curve, I've found).

I generally recompose EVERY shot, then check the screen (I'm an unapologetic chimper) and keep trying until I get it right or right enough (or I bail and move on). Slow and methodical. I also use single-point AE when I'm in manual exposure mode (usually my focus point and desired exposure point are the same). I hit the green button, open up 2/3 of a stop, lock focus, recompose and shoot.

Oops, I just gave away my secrets...

Use wisely.

My guess is you'll need to wait until Adobe adds the K-01 to their list. Strange because supposedly DNG was supposed to be universal - now we find out there are different versions.

Yeah. I'm working on that. Tried already but it looked messy. I'm using four lenses right now and for the foreseeable future: 21mm f3.2 Ltd., 40mm f2.8 XS. 70mm f2.4 Ltd., and a manual-focus oldie, the 200mm f4 SMC. If I can figure out a graceful way to include the info with images, I will, but right now I'm just trying to catch up.

To everyone, thanks for the kind words.

Hi Everybody.

I've started a Tumblr blog devoted to my K-01 images: Stanley & The Revolting Contraption

Some of the images you may have seen here already, others will be new. With just enough text for brief explanatory purposes. In the process of bringing it up to date now, but I thought I'd post a link as I continue updating. Once that's done, I'll be adding new photos every few days.

Click the "About This Blog" button for my mission statement and an explanation of the blog's name.

Enjoy!

I know how DNG works, but I'm not sure if it's as easy as you say, since the OP is having trouble with the Pentax version of DNG that's coming straight out of the K-01. The Adobe converter offers support for the K-5 and K-r but not the K-01 as of yet, so if the OP needs to convert from the Pentax version to a more universal version that Capture One can read, Adobe can't help with that for now.

At least that's my interpretation. Anybody with some knowledge of this area, feel free to correct me.

Good questions. A little Googling found me this page at Adobe's site. It looks as if it may be too early yet for K-01 support.
