I agree with the "what's better about it than the 18-135" crowd. While pentax is not known for very fast glass, this new lens speed is quite useless (IMHO). With very sharp (and fast) glass available from other sellers (looking at you Sigma 18-35 1.4), what motivation will pentaxians have for this new piece of glass from pentax?

I'm hoping that this will be the new "kit lens" to replace the venerable 18-55.

With that, I also hope they will release a companion * (star) version with a constant 2.8. Or even better, a veritable 1.8-2.8 and sharp as hell, k-mount only. That would be a piece of glass pentaxians could brag about.

Come on Ricoh, stop making lame duck glass for us to put onto amazing DSLRs like the K-3. We need both amazing bodies AND amazing glass.

Just my $.02

Would they be able to sell/market a 24mp FF right next to a 24mp APSC for $1000 less? To you and I, we know the difference (and can make the choice based on our photographic needs). To the layman, they may not. Many people (general consumers) still only see the Mp count. All that being said, would Ricoh even be marketing the FF to the unknowing consumer masses. My guess is no. What is your thoughts on this?

I agree with you all. The 645z is an amazing rig (just watched a few videos about it) at $8500, the Z will be excellent. As for the fabled FF DSLR, you are all right. It needs to be $2000-$2500 (or perhaps cheaper).

I voted yes. There are two reasons (three really) I think it will happen:

First; The mysterious "* tele zoom" 70-200 lens on the road map. On last years road map the projected * lens was clearly identified as a "DA* Zoom". This year, the DA is "conveniently" missing. This focal range is ideal off a FF and is, I believe, a hidden signal as to an imminent FF release.

Second, a 36 mp FF would fit perfectly in their top end body line up. 24mp APSC, "36 mp FF", 51mp medium format. MSRP Pricing could fall out as $1200, $3500, $8500. At $3500 (+/- $1000) a pentax FF would be very competitive against the CaNikon offerings.

And third, I have hope. Ricoh seams to be injecting life and vigor into the pentax name and line much more so than Hoya did.

Here's to hoping. 👍👍

True Full Frame 36x24, 24.3Mpix sensor (same or similar as D600)
2. High RAW color depth and Dynamic range of 14.4 EV or better
3. Fabled automatic "crop" for DA Lenses (1.4 crop factor to produce a 25x18, 18Mpx RAW file)
4. Two versions of sensor, one with and one without the anti-aliasing filter (like the K5ii and K5iis)
5. Dual SD card slots capable of using SDHC, SDXC and up to UHS card
6. HUGE, Fast and intelligent buffer. (With a huge and fast internal and INTELEGENT buffer, this rig could take large amounts of successive shots without slowing down or skipping a beat. Imagine firing 25 or 30 shots, lifting your finger off the shutter and instantly being able to shoot more shots, NO WRITE WAITING).
7. High frames per second, at least 6 FPS. (The large buffer would help with this)
8. Of course a strong magnesium (or aluminum) frame/chassis.
9. Fully weather and dust sealed (even tighter than the K5ii)
10. Still have Sensor Shift shake reduction. (level, composition adjust ect)
11. Built in GPS (with automatic location Metadata tagging).
12. Built in WiFi? (kinda torn on this one, but still think it's good for wireless tethering possibilities and WiFi location tagging)
13. I would like to see Pentax embrace their past. Include all the exposure data for all K-mount and M42 lenses within the camera to be called out on demand. For example, You put on an old m42 135mm 2.8 super takumar and "select" it wit in the internal database, set the Aperture ring, select the same aperture on the body and BOOM, the body start giving you exposure information for ISO and Shutter (even auto Exposure in Av mode!). Imagine how much easier all those old lenses would be to use. (Exposure wise.)
14. Focus peaking during movie mode and Live view
15. Better Movie mode option (Or any would be a start. How about H.264 for better usability)
16. Keep K-mount, and mirror, continue to improve AF in all lighting condition;
17. Removed AA filter and include in-body moire removal, and CA removal;
18. Full manual control on video (at least have 1080p 60fps);
19. Interchangeable use of AA and lithium battery like K-30/K-50. Allow user select APSC mode or FF mode (not auto select based on lens attached, so you can use apsc mode on FF lens) *See #3
20. Allow all sort of customization with buttons (raw button, green button, LV button, would like to add a SR button) and menu (borrow from Ricoh experience), these are just software;
21. Open up API to allow all sort of creativity to use the camera hardware and software.
22. Do not let Marc Newson design the camera (kidding!).

K-5ii/iis is .avi. For some reason the K-30 is the only Pentax DSLR that is NOT .avi

And Yes it would be worth all of $2,000- 2,500. That is a good price point for first showing. It would settle out at about $1,800-$2,000 after a few months directly competing with Canikon FF offerings, but haveing more "pentaxian" features.

Carrrlangas;

Not sure how you can "not care for any items" on the list and want to "keep using the same body as K-5". Most of the items I put on the list were carryovers from the K-5. I love my K-5. However, if Pentax simply slapped a FF sensor into a K-5 body and did nothing else I believe it would be a total flop. Pentax has been know and is trying to be different then the rest (Canikon). The Q line is a testament to that. Their DSLR line up (K-5ii/s K-5, K-30, K-50, k-500) is BEGGING for a Bigger better flagship. I don't think a simple FF K-5 will do it. There needs to be more. I was hoping this Thread could tap into ideas of the shooters for what that "More" could and should be.

The larger sensor is harder to source. Think about it, they have been using the SAME Crop sensor for a while now in nearly all of thier DSLR models.

We can all dream right?

I wanted to start a thread where we could list and share some ideas and "hopes" as to what Pentax could and should put in to their future flagship Full Frame DSLR. I would like to keep this kinda realistic, so nothing so obscure that it's not even logical or relevant, like "wireless charging". Wireless charging is cool for a phone that only sips battery power, but not for a large DSLR. Also, try and "quote" the previous post's ideas and then add yours. This way we can hopefully avoid duplicates. This thread should be fun and interesting.

Here are a few of the "basic" ones. If they hit this or something close, they will have a very competitive product:

Here are some more "crazy" ideas.

2. Focus peaking during movie mode and Live view
3. Better Movie mode option (Or any would be a start. How about H.264 like the rest of the world)

What else would you like to see?
