Hi again ... and thanks for your further comments & suggestions. To Lars: Thanks for making it "open" - I'll get back to you when I know what may be feasible to do ...
@Kozlok: Hmmm... sounds interesting - If lucky I might stumble upon one then while travelling ...
@ripper2860:
I think I will stay with the K55/1.8 for now and then when back in Denmark (and not on a wireless connection) I may check pictures of both to shape my own impressions ...
Have a good day ;-)

Hi all,
First thanks for your prompt and helpful replies ... it's warming :-) ... as I was actually quite put off by what happened yesterday with my lens.
As it is I'm currently travelling in Europe and will continue to do so for probably another month or so - which besides emphasizing the ... of what happened - also makes it tricky for a possible new/replacement lens to get to me. Taking shipping time into consideration the most likely place to pick up another lens would be Budapest but reading about poste restante in Budapest on the internet I get the impression that it's not an entirely fool proof arrangement, so ....
@LaHo: Hi Lars ... Thanks for your offer - I think I would like to buy your lens, however, another forum member has sent me a PM about a lens available from somewhere in Europe - and if luck is with me it could be that it's close to where I will travel. So I'll prefer to first clarify with him which lens it is and also where I could pick it up, if feasible. Can I reserve your lens in the meantime? In Denmark I live in the north-western part (around Limfjorden) so I will have to ask you to send it, if possible, when I get back - or some kind of reliable poste restante/similar arrangement can be put in place while travelling (will pay in advance). Is that ok with you?
Thanks again to you all ;-)

Hi Pentaxians,
... I'm posting this thread in a "state of sadness" as today I happened to drop what I consider my best lens on asphalt - and now the focus ring is locked and the lens basically useless :(
It's not an expensive lens (Asahi Opt. Co., Japan; SMC Takumar 1:1.8 / 55, S.No.: 7936380) - and it is old, and with manual focus ... but getting it a couple of years ago I have become very fond of its sharpness, the color rendering and not least a slight degree of magic that I don't find to the same extent with my other lenses.
So I'm looking for a replacement (could also be the 8 element 50 mm f 1.4 manual focus) and hope one of you here may have a suggestion as to where I may buy such a lens at a fair price - and preferably in Europe so that customs & shipping are fair as well. I have a K5 camera and it should mount on this (K mount is a vague memory ...)
Thanks for any suggestions & help!

@Kayaker-J: Thanks for your reply some days ago now. Admittedly, I've had to take a bit of time to look up your various suggestions on the internet as well as visualizing the various solutions ... But I'm now considering two possible solutions inspired by your suggestions: One is a DIY woolen felt pouch whereas the other one is a modified ebay pouch. So thanks for outlining your suggestions to such a degree ;-)
Have a good day,

@colonel00: Hi, it's partly something like you link to - inspiring!
Yes, you are correct in reading my post this way - yet I'm also looking for a protection that just covers the most exposed parts of the camera body (to protect against accidentally hitting these parts against something) while keeping the most used control dials free to operate.
The lens covering part of the cover you link to could be what I'm looking for but if possible I'd rather have a camera-body-part-cover that can be removed easily over the shutter button and the program dials only ... Hope you can visualize this (?). Maybe there can be some small cloth pieces that normally covers these controls and is fixed to the rest of the camera body cover e.g. with velcro so that they can quickly be opened ...
Cheers and thanks again for your reply ;-)

Hi Pentaxians,
I have a K5 that I am quite satisfied with, however, I have for some time now been looking for a camera cover/"bag" that will cover/protect the edges of the K5 while still allowing me to instantly/quickly take photographs with the camera.
I'm thinking something like:
- a relatively thin (rain/protective) cover, where the part that goes over the lens may quickly be released to an extent where the lens adjustments can be accessed. I will be using relatively short lenses - a standard zoom & fixed 55 & 24 mm lenses.
- the other normally used controls are also immediately accessible (shutter control, the dials associated with the top right side display & maybe the program dials).
I've searched for this on ebay but haven't found anything suitable ...
As it is I already carry a bag and I would like this camera cover to allow for a very immediate use of the camera while still protecting it. To this end I'm not looking for a camera bag as such.
Thinking that some of the K5 users here may have had a similar need and hoping you have a suggestion ... Accessibility in Europe would be preferred.
Cheers & thanks for any help :)

Hi Steve,
Thanks also for your feedback. As it is I guess I'm rotating the lens so much that the aperture is no more influenced by the actuator mechanism but "permanently" set to any of the f/2.8-22 values as dialed in on the lens. I noticed, though, that when I rotated the lens somewhat less the available aperture depended on how much I rotated it. But not so now ...
Again, a bit unsettling but I prefer the resulting extra sharpness.
Greetings for your day ;)

Hi Adam ... thanks again for replying and suggesting. However, I actually am able to use the "P" mode if I mount the lens but don't quite rotate it so that it is fully locked in place. When looking from the outside onto the lens it is also visually apparent that the aperture is variably "closed" depending on the aperture setting. So, it's ok with me in this way ...
BTW: When you suggest the "A" series lenses do you then mean these: Pentax A Prime Lenses - Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
or do you mean the FA lenses?
Cheers ;-)

Hi Adam,
& thanks for your quick reply. The thread you link to is very helpful and so now I know how it can be done. However, I admittedly would prefer to be able to use the camera with the lenses in "P" mode so will consider using them not mounted and locked ... The thought of it is a bit unsettling, though ...
Anyway thanks again for helping out :)

Hi Pentaxians,
I have a K5 that I am very pleased with, however, I can't make the aperture settings on my 24 mm/f2.8 (manual focus) work when the lens is fully mounted on the camera.
I can, however, make the aperture settings work if I don't completely mount the lens on the camera (that is don't rotate it all the way until it clicks to indicate mounted & locked), however, this is less feasible in the long run :( So I wonder if there could be a setting that I need to set to make the aperture work when the lens is fully mounted?
The camera is otherwise set to manual focus & "using aperture ring" and works fine.
Any insights appreciated ;)
Jesper
P.S.: I found this link here on Pentax forums but it doesn't look as if I can use the 24/f2.8 lens with aperture settings e.g. in the K-5's "P" mode ...? https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/54-pentax-lens-articles/110657-how-use-me...ml#post1140019 |

Hi all,
& thank you very much for your replies. To make sure that nothing inadvertently happens that could lock the mount adapter onto the camera I've decided to remove the spring and screw altogether - and now it seems to work :-) The adapter twists onto the camera mount and the slight distance that I had previously noticed between the adapter and the camera mount is now gone. The adapter doesn't, however, seem to lock onto the camera mount - i.e. I don't have to press the lens release button to unscrew the adapter - but since it's firmly fixed anyway it doesn't really matter (I think ..). I somehow have an impression that you've saved me quite some trouble with your replies - so thanks! And best wishes for the days to come.

Hi - & thanks for your quick reply. Surprising though that you can't see the adapter when clicking on the link I gave ... when I click it I go to the "end of auction" webpage and if I scroll down just a bit the adapter can be seen.
I don't know if it's a no name adapter but on the top side - the side that points towards the lens when screwed into the lens - it says "M42-Pentax Japan".
Anyway I'll see if I can take some pictures tomorrow and post them here
Cheers,
Jesper

Hi Pentaxians,
I've recently bought an M42 to P/K adapter on ebay, however, I have some issues mounting it on my K-5 and not wanting to press my luck I now hope one of you can help clarify what could be the issue. The adapter I bought can be found here: Adapter für M42 Objektive an Pentax Bajonett | eBay
(Please scroll down a bit to see the ebay auction ad).
The "challenge" is that even if I can get the adapter to slip in through the K-5 mount it is as if the adapter is maybe still half a millimeter from being all the way into the K-5 mount. Also I can't rotate the adapter in the K-5 mount.
I'm rather reluctant to use any kind of force - and wonder if maybe the adapter could be faulty or I have to set the lens' or the camera's controls in a certain way to make it lock into the K-5 mount?
Hope one of you can help - and Christmas Greetings to you ;)

Hi all,
& thanks a lot for your replies & suggestions ... what a fine & very useful feedback from you :) I'll just consider what to do - the main thing was to find out if there were any known driver or other issue with either the camera or the software but it doesn't seem to be so. Great! .... BTW it seems to be a very special camera ...

Hello All,
I hope one of you can help with this as I can't quite fathom why it happens ... I recently got a fine K-5 and now am trying to connect it to my laptop via USB, however, the laptop doesn't recognise the K-5. Is this normal & if so might one of you know of a solution to it?
Help is appreciated ;)

Ooups - looks like "Not a Number" answered my question while I was writing my last post. So it looks as if it will be possible to have the camera do the shutter speed calculation - great!
Thank you both for replying ;-)

Hi drypenn,
& thanks for your quick & helpful reply! I wonder though what this means in practice:
Does it mean that I have to manually adjust a scale of some kind to make the shutter speed fit with the light available or can this be done automatically? What I would be fine with doing manually is adjusting the focus and aperture values but I would prefer the shutter speed to be automatic. Do you know if this is possible?
Greetings,
Jesper

Hi Bobpur,
Thanks for airing your caution, and as it is I yesterday was able to gently squeeze the surfaces that hold the lens into a slightly less firm grip on the lens. So it works now and even well so.
So I sense being pleased ;-)
Thanks again both of you!

Hi both,
You are magnificent! I did exactly what you suggested and off the adapter came - no trouble at all :-)
As it is the adapter didn't come with any kind of instruction so I didn't know if the knob was for locking the lens on the adapter (tightening it) - and I didn't observe it moving towards the camera while rotating it - but now it works. Yeehaaaahhh - appreciated :-) Will send you a friendly "thank you" tonight before sleep comes my way ;-)
BTW the lens came off quite easily now - might be due to the olive oil - but mounting other lenses is tight again so will try the sandpaper. Thanks again!
Greetings,
Jesper

Hi Pentaxians,
I'm really frustrated and hope one of you can help with this ... It is so that I recently bought an SMC 24mm f2.8 lens and mounted it on the adapter I had bought for my Sony NEX-5 camera. Mounting the lens on the adapter was a tight fit (something I also noticed on the Pentax ME Super camera that came with the lens) but I added just a tiny bit of olive oil on the metal parts and then slid the lens onto the adapter. This worked and at the end of rotating the lens onto the adapter I noticed a low "click" and then the lens was there.
However, now I cannot get the lens off of the adapter again :( .... The lens is not mechanically "locked" on the adapter - it can be moved ever so slightly relative to the adapter - maybe ½ mm - but it is as if there's a mechanism - the "click" - that somehow prevents it from coming loose. And besides the knob on the adapter, which doesn't appear to make any difference in this context, I can't see any release mechanisms on either the lens or the adapter I bought.
I've attached a couple of pictures so that you can see what the lens + adapter looks like.
And - help is really appreciated!
