No hard figures I dont think. I havent seen any decent test shots from any users or any of the major reviews either.

I really really want to see an extensive EDR image test in multiple environments because I need to decide between the K20 or the A700 =\

Well this lens doesnt have an aperture ring at all, so Its pretty much always at an 'A' like setting I guess.

I have of course taken the lens off and inspected the little bar/spring mechanism and the aperture blades and all seem to move freely and open/close just as they should... Im stumped.

Those are some good points, and yeah its becoming apparent that M mode will generally be better.

But Im still trying to figure out why both with and without flash I am getting brighter pictures at a smaller aperture like 7-8 than I am at 5.6 and under...I cant seem to find any info on why this might be happening...

I know that using a smaller aperture sometimes yields sharper photos..but I dont think thats it.

I agree, my 'insane' might be totally ridiculous to you or someone else. And youre absolutely right to say that +.3 EV is a matter of taste...this is exactly my point. Tools like EV comp and such are there to be either creative tools to get a certain picture or a desired effect..but the standards should be just that, a decent baseline with which to start, I shouldnt have to bump everything up just to get to what I think should be a standard.

I've tried every setting the camera is capable of as far as I know. And in my opinion, a new camera and one 3 years old SHOULD have some differences, but they are still both cameras designed to do the same thing are they not? I know its not fair to compare it on every level to the Sony, but I just don't think there should be that big a difference in the baseline quality of the photos. I would definitely like to compare it to a K20 though.

No, I'm only talking about using a new AF sigma lens with nothing but the A setting available to it. Everyone seems to think Im talking about having problems with an M lens..its the opposite.

That looks like a fairly bright photo, what settings/PP were used?

And yeah..most of the problems are probably going to be indoors with flash as far as underexposing. Outdoors shots are less likely to underexpose, or are just easier to fix in post usually. The only other problem Ive had with outdoors shots is getting weird changes to the color of the sky when taking a bunch of pictures at once following a bird or something..same settings and all but sky ranges from deep blue to grey.

yeah..range and not rage..haha.

I'm curious to see some test photos from the new K20 adopters that display the difference between a pic with and without the new EDR feature..indoor pictures using the built in flash and some outdoor pictures would be great. Thanks in advance!

*takes out K10 in normally lit bedroom

*points it at wall, points it at object on floor...

*listens to his AF drive rotate his focusing ring from 1.6ft to infinity about 300 times instead of focusing.

hmmmmmm.

Well thats the thing, I had both a 50mm and a 135mm all manual lens for weeks before my aufocus sigma came and as far as I know I was always coming up with the picture that I wanted and expected with those lenses. It wasnt until I started using the K10s metering, etc with the AF lens that I was disappointed.

Well I agree with that, hence I purchased it. For instance it would kill me to get a camera without weather seals now. Turns out they neglected to mention a feature was insanely dark pictures using any form of the cameras own metering. That or I got a faulty unit..one of the two.

Thanks for the sample photos..I am very curious to see how the K20s new dynamic range feature works relative to not using it (the same frame with it on and off), and compared to other cameras' version of that feature.

Well I wish I could say there were secrets, but after pretty much ravaging every single setting on the camera a dozen times I still can't get what I'm looking for. I had never read that the K10 overexposes...I only saw that it was under...but I never thought it would be as dark as it actually is..after seeing the exact same shots from a sony a700, I'm convinced the K10 is a very basic camera, to put it lightly. I'm thinking the K20 might be a little better with a CMOS sensor and some DRO function, but going to another pentax knowing how the K10 performs scares me. Really wish things were different as I did a lot of research before buying.

I just went through and did some more test shots..still clueless as to whats going on though. I tried some shots with flash +.5 and +1 and couldnt really tell a difference on most. Tried it at the same time as +1-3 EV comp and sometimes got a better shot, other times got the exact same one with +3ev and +1.. Same ap and shutter speeds.. Really don't know what to make of it.

As it is, it would take pretty much the max EV comp in most situations to get close to the shot Im looking for, but thats unacceptable as far as Im concerned for what the K10 is supposed to be.

I have mostly been using center weighted average mode. And as far as the flash being too strong, I again refer to my brothers camera which if anything should be equal or brighter.

I am mostly using AV mode between f3.5 and 8. Without the flash shutter times go to a half second or longer and I am pretty much always in for a blurry picture that way. I believe I even went and did test shots with flash at different shutter speeds and could not tell a difference between the max 180 and something like 20...not sure if thats right either. My brother kept insisting that the K10 has a failed shutter because it sounds like its operating so slow, and I have to agree after hearing his A700 which is pretty much instant, whereas mine sounds the same all the way to 1/4000..not sure if this is a real issue though.

MJB: do you know generally what the difference is between what you end up using in manual versus what the camera would 'think' in the same situation? That would be good info.

Once again, my post really has nothing to do with using an M lens..not the issue here.

As far as the flash, I did try using it's own EV comp and didn't notice much of a difference. The shots were all pretty much taken in a typical room with a light/ceiling fan being the main light...and we were taking pictures of things around the room no more than 8 feet away..if thats pushing the limits I guess I need to take my illusions of digital cameras somewhere else like Sony haha.

I will get some test photos of the aperture anomoly soon.

The dullness cannot just be attributed to the way the camera processes the image..the sharpness and color and all are either already fine or can be tweaked in post. The dullness however is affecting the entire frame in the same manner of just simply being flat and severely underexposed leaving you nothing to work with, and in some cases hardly anything to even see...IE its not an issue of the difference between bright and normal modes of processing.

I was using the built in flash as was my brother. My photos were just simply coming out too dark, which no setting in the camera aside from ISO can fix according to all my playing with settings. Thing is, I don't want to and don't think I should have to sacrifice that much quality using ISO 400 or above just to get what another camera puts out at default settings and ISO100 with no noise. I know I'm talking about a camera that costs twice as much, so I guess I'll have to go at it that way. I just can't see how any camera can be *that* much different. I can go into ACRAW and bump up all the EV and everything, and sometimes that helps. But not only do I think I shouldn't have to do that, it doesn't really bring out the kind of detail and brightness I'm looking for no matter what settings I use.

As far as color and sharpness, they seem to be ok (AWB is sometimes off) and can always be fixed some in post, but I rarely need to. It's the entire exposure of the frame thats just not coming through and cannot be recovered to the extent that another camera records it by default with no PP.

The lens doesnt have an a-ring, its all camera controlled..its a real puzzle to me as to why I get brighter photos with less light coming in. Im guessing it might be a flash timing thing and the way the light reflects back into the lens?

Hm, I think you guys have misunderstood. My results with the M lens have been fine..I can work out the exposure and get the picture I want. My problem is the camera is not doing this on its own with my autofocus lens as I was expecting.

Had my K10 for a month or so now...at first only had an old M lens and was obviously shooting full manual, waiting eagerly for my AF lens. ( sigma 28-200 3.5-5.6 ) Pictures metered this way generally came out fairly decent as expected...but in real life situations I can't always stand there and take 6 reference photos to get the right exposure you know? Thats where the digital is supposed to come in..

I get my new sigma AF lens the day before my trip to Houston to visit my brother who uses an A700. So I've got my new camera and lens and we're sitting around taking test shots with my autofocus lens in Av and different modes and such...and it quickly becomes apparent my camera is underexposing up to 2 stops. I have read this is normal to preserve highlights and what not.. but in my opinion this is just awful. Add to this my brothers camera while being a better one for sure, was making mine look like a glorified single use kodak...

His photos in the same room with built in flash and sometimes using the same settings and exposure and such were coming out..well perfect. There was no over or underexposure...flesh tones and objects looked right on..exactly how I would expect ANY camera to take them honestly.. Now this could be because of a few things granted..most probably Sony's DRO feature which takes dark areas and brightens them up etc.. thats what I'm thinking. I tried literally every mode and setting multiple times and nothing would give me the kind of photo that popped off the LCD or monitor like I would expect. The pics were all very sharp so I am pleased with the new autofocus lens...its the camera I feel is lacking.

Now sure I could go and increase the EV comp and shoot manual mode with an auto lens (impossible alot of the time) and such, but that still didnt give the overall photograph I was expecting...all I got was dullness frankly..not what I was expecting after 3 months of research and deciding on the K10D...because of this I am considering the K20 because of the CMOS sensor and its sony-like DRO feature which I now feel is absolutely a must on any camera..

Also, is it normal when using the flash to get a brighter picture at a smaller aperture? I seem to get brighter photos at f7-8 than i do at f3.5 for instance with my 28-200..which goes against everything I have read on the subject to date.
