Well... it's done.

That was kind of easy... although I didn't have to do much. I didn't even got to the blades. In the middle of the disassembly, they somehow snapped and started responding to the aperture ring.

Now I'm worried they'll get stuck again. But, oh well... time will tell.

Haha, thank you again.

Well, luckily, the lens came with a Pentax MX I bought last week. The lens was, somehow, not having influence on the price of the whole kit. I can now see why. I thought it was just a dumb seller giving it away.

Anyway, I'm going to try the risky solution. I'm good at taking things apart, so... hopefully, I'll be able to clean the blades with some alcohol.

So, just to make sure... it's impossible that this isn't like the Canon FD lenses with the interlock thingy, right?

Thanks for your reply, Rico.

Well, let's see... it is a PK mount. Yes, it has a little tab, I think it's called the diaphragm actuator. But no, the diaphragm doesn't move when I push the little tab.

Hi, everyone.

So, I recently got an RMC Tokina 28mm 2.8, and there's something with it I find kind of strange...

So, let's say I take my Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 and start moving the aperture ring. When you see through the lens, you can clearly see the blades moving, closing and opening the aperture.

However, when I do this with my Tokina, there's no apparent blade movement at all. All I see is a perfect circle, not even some kind of polygon shape.

I've been wondering about this ever since I noticed the same behavior on a Canon Automatic lens.

Is there something wrong with my Tokina or this is just normal on some lenses? I've heard about jammed blades before, so I'm kind of concerned.

Well, tomorrow I'll be shipping the camera to a professional technical service, so it's good to know where the problem might be. Thank you, Tom.

I'm already having some trouble with my camera, people.
Here's the thread I made about it in the General Technical Troubleshooting section:

Just like the title says, the mirror in my K1000 sometimes doesn't quite feel like doing it's job. And I hate that, because I bought it like two weeks ago.

Here's how it goes... I bought the camera, loaded some film in it and then I went out shooting nonsense and taking notes to check how well the meter was working. However, when the negs came back from the lab, any concerns I might have had about the meter disapeared when I noticed four random shots were completely black. At first I thought it might be a shutter problem, but then I saw something that made that theory invalid.

Here's what I saw:

As you can see, frame number 8 (middle bottom) is completely black, however, frame number 4 (middle top) has some exposure on the top portion. Now, if the problem was in the shutter curtains, the exposed portion would be vertical, since they travel horizontally. This is what made me realize the problem was with the mirror. It either gets stuck down and doesn't come up, or it just barely moves, giving the kind of exposed portion you see in frame 4.

Now, I know some (or most) of you will tell me to get it CLAd. The bad news is I live in a small town, and nobody offers that kind of service around here. I already wrote to the guy who sold me the camera to see if he could take care of that, since he lives in a major city (Buenos Aires, actually, which is, the capital).

Anyway, what I need is to see if someone had this problem before, heard about it or knows if it can be fixed.

Comprendo, my friend. After all, the GWC approach never fails, right?

Thank you all very much for your answers.

Jon has already replied my questions about his kit and turns out he's more than hapy with shipping all the way down here.

I'm still thinking about the wool thread method though... :D

Well, the thing is I'm in Argentina, and I think shipping would be not only long but complicated.

I've just checked the light seals and I think they'll need some work done. The ones in the back are very stiff. They are there, but they seem dry.

Now, the mirror damper is very thin and is not thick enough to be "bouncy".

Are these signs of bad light seals?

I've seen a replacing method that involves wool thread... anyone tried this?

Hi Steve.

Luckily my K1000 came with it's original printed manual, inside of it's original box. It even has the receipt from 1980.

I'll make sure to check the light seals, as you say. The person who sold the camera to me said they were OK (I asked him). In case the need to replace them comes up, is this something I could do by myself?

Hey. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I really should trust more in what people say about this camera. It's good to hear about that half-winding thing. I came across that problem a couple of times while testing the camera and I thought it was some kind of mechanical problem. It wouldn't let me release the shutter until I half-turned the lever again. I guess I wasn't winding it to the very end. Now I check the orange dot by the lever.

Hey, there. I'm from Argentina and new to the forums. For a few years now I've been interested in photography, however, it wasn't 'til a couple of months ago I decided to finally get my first "student's camera". So, after reading a lot about photography and recommended cameras for beginners (for which the forums were very useful in providing me with reviews and such) I finally decided going with a film camera, and not just any camera, but a Pentax. I really feel this is the beginning of a long relationship.

So, my K1000 arrived today. I've been testing it and let me tell you, it's like no one ever used it before (I was lucky). It feels really comfty in my big hands (very heavy, though) and obviously, I got to experience that "sturdy" feeling it has that everyone talks about.

However, being conscious about what's inside of this little marvel and knowing how fragile some of it's components are, I'd really like to know what I absolutely MUST avoid when manipulating this camera. I know I must not touch the shutter curtain or the mirror. Is there anything else you could provide as a general rule?

Maybe it's just an impression, but when moving the rapid-wind lever I really feel like I could break something. This leads me to another important question I wanted to ask. What would happen if, by mistake, I turn the rapid-wind lever and then forget about it (maybe because I got distracted by a girl passing by) and then, without pressing the shutter release I turn the lever again. Could something go very wrong by doing this?

Anyway, happy to be here. I'll post results of my first shootings soon.

Cheers!
J.
