K-r Battery Life: AAs vs. Li-Ion?

My charger is a bit slow, rated at 200mAh.
But I suppose to charge 4 2000mAh @ 500 mAh will require more than a couple of hours, close to at least 4-5 hours I should think.

Using "stops" to measure Shake Reduction

Thanks for the confusing welcome :-P My dilemma stemmed from the fact that while experimenting on SR capabilities of the K-r there were times when I couldnt tell if my "shake" was consistent across shots. And I couldnt figure out a way to measure the SR effect reliably.

Any views on how SR compares between say the K20d, K-r and K-5 ?

Hey no offence meant. Agree totally with you. Fact is one cannot and should not comment on what others should be/should not be doing on any forum. I thought the post was more of a "general" wake-up call for many of us who might have digressed from their mission, that of learning photography. And thats the spirit I took it in.

I am sure there are. I have seen many myself. My remark was just in agreement to the OPs general statement that many of us are overindulging the "incidental" aspects of photography instead of concentrating on shooting, which is what we should be doing most of the time.

Using "stops" to measure Shake Reduction

Thanks everyone. The logic is understood. My only gripe is - doesnt that make the measurement of SR very subjective ? I mean in the first place using stops for SR is like using a surrogate form of measurement. Secondly, its very relative (and therefore rather inaccurate) in that the shake will vary from person to person and even with the same person - from time to time. you could try to control the experiment by using a tripod but then there wont be any SR !!

I often come across Shake Reduction/Image stabilisation being discussed in terms of "stops" of light but still cant figure out the connect. Can anyone help me with the logic ?

Oh My, Nikon and Canon ......

Thanks for the suggestion. I have no intention of hijacking this thread or any other for that matter. I cited the example of 'front focusing' in my 1st comment just to show that its one thing to have bugs (which any system can have) and quite another to own them up publicly and do something to rectify them. 'Front focusing' is the kinda threat that can potentially ruin a session and a risk which no one wants to live with. I think this was a problem that required far more attention from Pentax than it actually got.

I do think that for people who "in their heart of hearts, they think they can solve all their photographic issues by switching to Nikon or Canon.", shifting shouldnt be a big problem if they are willing to stand a 20% shave in their investment. I doubt that there are too many such people around.

K-r Battery Life: AAs vs. Li-Ion?

I bought a Pearstone replacement battery for K-r from B&H (@ 20 quid it aint exactly cheap) and it works as well as the original one. Get about 350-400 shots with each of them. Also use eneloops with the battery holder. But will admit I rely more on the Li-Ion ones for the simple reason they recharge fully in 1.5 hours while the eneloops take far far longer (more than a day). So in a pinch you can recharge your Li-Ions in a jiffy which you cant do with the AAs. For many this would clinch the issue.

Yup. I am not aware of the fixes either. Pentax never mentioned this in any of the "fix description" far as I recall. I am on v1.12 and it still front focuses !!

Hi Todd ! I can identify with the sentiment. I suppose things are much the same at other forums - Pentax based, Nikon based or Canon based. Maybe this is so because its probably easier to talk about gear, its price, company policies, etc than it is to take photographs ! Also its kinda substitute for inability/incapability for photography (Freudian angle :-P). And lastly, as Clavius put it, its our obsession with technology and its marvels that makes us discuss more about what the gear can do rather than what we can do.

Thanks for the wake up call anyways.

Bugs are bound to surface especially with Cameras/technology getting more complex every passing day. As long as companies own up and try rectifying the problem, there shouldn't be much of an issue.

I remember when I had acquired the D7000, I used to sulk at the fact that Nikon didnt allow us to use third party batteries. When I got the K-r I was absolutely stunned to learn that Pentax wasnt doing anything to fix the front focusing problem, something which is of far bigger consequence than not allowing third party battery usage. And much as I absolutely adore my SMCPs, I'll admit that some of the Pentax glass is presently preposterously expensive. Compared to that Canon glass looks like a steal !

Question Voting on Topics of Common Interest

Hi everyone !

Is there a way to start a poll/voting on something ?
Example, it would be interesting to know how many of our members used autofocus 99/75/50/25% of the time. Or how many regularly edit their photos beyond cropping. Or similar topics/questions of common interest.

Thanks and Regards

Thanks Rhyan. I'm told Pentax gear is more easily found in SE Asia than anywhere else.

I finally ordered a Vivitar after much trepidation and frustration. Hope it works well on my 70-200 Tamron. Keeping fingers crossed for the Pentax TC.

Hullo Sam,
Nice of you to have dropped in. Yup, Syd Barrett (with a double 'r") was the legendary founder of Pink Floyd.
Hope to interact more on the forum in the coming days.

Thanks for the peep Arn !

Lucky you. The 12-24 seems to be a swell lens from whatever little I have read about it. I like the Tamron 17-50 too, just that it isnt wide enough for my purposes.

Hi baro-nite !

Thanks for sharing the review. That was useful. If the Vivitar TC wont autofocus with SDM lenses, as also with the DA200, its use will be limited.

I might consider the 15mm too. I had zeroed in on the 14mm since it was the fastest of the lot therefore good for landscapes at dawn/dusk. Ideally I would have loved to get the 12-24. Its wide enough for me and has the added benefit of zooming upto 24mm, making it good for street photography. Dont know why Tokina doesnt have a Pentax version of 11-16mm. I loved the lens on my Nikon.

Hi ,

I am from Kolkata and have an active interest in SLR photography. I have been shooting the Nikon F80, the Nikon D90 and the Canon 50D and have very little experience with Pentax. Even though I have heard fantastic things about Pentax and have always wanted to move to it, my much awaited switch has been delayed largely due to unavailability of Pentax in India. Finally however, I have managed to acquire a Pentax and among other things, a Tamron 80-200 2.8 (K mount) with the express intention of getting a fast telephoto (with shake reduction) at an affordable price. Now, I need help with the following :-

(1) I need a good 1.4x autofocus teleconverter for the aforesaid lens. I am open to the Pentax 1.7x and the Tamron 1.4x/Kenko 1.5x but I understand these are hard to come by and rather expensive when they do. With Pentax likely to take another year or so to launch its new 1.4x teleconverter, is there a good alternative thats easily available at the moment ??

(2) Extension to the question above, do the Tamron/other 1.4x autofocus teleconverters, autofocus with manual pentaxes too, just like the Pentax 1.7x does ?

(3) Suggestions on nooks and crannies in Kolkata where I could get Pentax lenses/gear.

(4) Feedback on the Pentax DA 16-50mm 2.8. I was keen on getting one as my walk-around lens, but read that it isnt so good at 16mm. Should I get the DA 14mm instead ?

Lastly, even though I have become a member of the forum only lately, I have been following it for quite some time now. Just want to put it on record that YOU GUYS ROCK !! :)
