K-5 now only $799 at Adorama - ALL-TIME LOW!

I forgot to mention, I also bought my K-5 from Adorama. I jumped the gun and didn't get the Black Friday price, oh well. But I did get a killer price on a Pentax 18-135 WR from B&H, arriving Monday so I guess it's OK. The K-5 is an addition to my first and until now, my only DSLR, a Pentax *istD I bought new in 2003, which I DO plan to keep using, as it's a rock!

My K-5 arrived on Monday, all new and shiny. I only spent a little time with it during the week but had more time today to give it a try, more tomorrow. It's what I expected and it will be a great camera. I'm happy I bought it, especially at the current prices.

My K-5 will arrive on Monday. I wonder if Adorama will issue be a credit for the difference between the $ 798.00 I paid and the Black Friday deal of $ 748.00? I think they normally do on a reduction but for this special deal, I'm not sure.

It's done, I ordered the K-5 body, 16 GB SD Card, extra Pentax battery, and battery grip, all from Adorama. $798.00 for the body is too much to pass up. Thanks Adam, you're right, you pushed me over the edge.

The $ 798.00 price is toying, I might have to think about a mate for my *istD. The K-5 Kit is $ 833.00 including Camera Body, SanDisk 16GB SDHC Ultra Memory Card, Spare DL-I90 Type (not Pentax) Battery, Adorama Slinger Camera Bag, Digital Memory Case. Also the K-5 body and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens is $ 899.00. All of these with free shipping.

*istD & SMC DA 18-135mm compatibility

Julie & Elliott or anyone,
So if I should decide to get a K-30 or K-5 (or rumored replacement) can I assume that all the lenses I now use with my *istD will only manually focus on the new camera? I'm sorry to be such a dummy but it's still kind of foreign to an old guy like me.

Thank you, Steve-Seattle

Is the Pentax SMC DA 18-135 lens compatible with the *istD? The Pentax USA web site says no as it is SDM only and is not compatible with older DSLR's. But I'm getting feed back from others saying it does. I tried a search on the Pentax forum but couldn't find any information. Which it right?

Thank you,

Another K-5 discontinued

Now it's gone altogether! Not shown discontinued or unavailable, disappeared. Maybe I should just suck it up and buy the body and lens separately and pay the $ 60 more. Or maybe better a K-5 and 18-135 WR? But B&H also lists the 18-135 as temporarily unavailable.

B&H has the K-5 body and 18-55 WR zoom shown as Temporarily out of stock instead of Discontinued, price still at $989. They're teasing me!

B&H advertised a K-5 body with a 18-55 WR zoom late last week for, as I remember, $ 989.00, a fairly decent price. Today it is listed but is shown as DISCONTINUED. They still list the body only at $ 879.00 and a couple of K-5's with accessory kits. How long does everyone think the K-5 will be available? I'm one of those on the fence trying to decide to upgrade but I'm not sure to what, a K-5, K-30, or wait. However it will stretch my budget to pay the $ 1,600+ which is what I'm sure the rumored replacement will be. And if the also rumored FF should actually show up, that is way out of my price range. Or maybe I should be a big chicken, dump everything including my Pentax lenses and defect. But that would be hard as I've had a Pentax of one sort or another in my had since the mid 1980's. It used to be a lot easier back in the old days.

As a side note; even though I talk about the Nikon D5100 in my last post, my interest is in comparisons only between it and the K-5. I have no intention of switching as I have a long and successful experience with Pentax cameras. I also have a fairly good selection of Pentax lenses and accessories that I'm not willing to give up.

Thank you all for your input, it is much appreciated. I can easily see that the consensus is that I should take the plunge and upgrade from my *istD to the K-5.

My idea about an upgrade got started when my daughter and I spent part of a day taking the same photos side by side and then comparing the results, she using her new Nikon D5100 and me my *istD. We stuck with totally automatic for comparison purposes, built in flash, similar lens power. When we looked at the results I was shocked to see how much better her photos were than mine. This was what put my mind in motion. Originally I was sure that my *istD was able to shoot photos similar in quality to the Nikon but I was wrong.

My question to you all is would you rate the K-5 on a par with the Nikon D5100?

I’m also anxious to know what Pentax/Ricoh plans to do with their cameras. I’m not interested in a FF camera as I’m not willing to make that kind of investment. As Adam says, maybe I should wait and see what happens in the next six months to a year. But in reading your forum, it seems that that is totally up in the air.

Another issue is that I’m not able to go to a brick & mortar store and look at and touch a K-5 as it seems that during this transitional period there are no Pentax “dealers” in my area (Seattle, WA). For someone who likes to look and touch, it is difficult to deal with on-line sellers.

Thanks again,
Steve

My *istD

Be patient with me, I'm new. I have a Pentax *istD that I bought new in Oct. 2003. I loved it then, I love it now Over the years I have collected a nice collection of lenses and accessories that I love and use regularly. However, I'm getting a case of up-grade-itis, would like to stay with Pentax but I have some questions. I'm considering a K-5 so that I could keep all my lenses which makes sense. But in your opinions, will I see that much of an improvement in quality between my *istD and a K-5? My photos are mostly printed to a maximum size of 8" x 10". Most never go beyond being placed in a folder on my computer. I don't care about "live view" as I don't think you can get much more live than real time through my view finder. I don't care about video as if I want video I woll use a video only camera. I don't care about weather proof as I carry plastic bags and an umbrella. I realize that a K-5 has a lot of bells and whistles but my main interest is the finished product, the photo I see. I love to shoot as much as I can but I admit I'm a dinosaur and have some pretty basic needs and interests.
Any opinions are most welcomed.
