Hi ALL

thanks for confirming my thinking. No one advised just one big cards. On contrary I even got suggestion to go lower on GB and more on pcs - like 32/16MB. Worth to consider.

This was also one of the top 3 reasons also for me ;)

good one ;)

Many thanks again to all contributors ;)

One 128GB or two 64GB cards

Hi

I am bit puzzled: I will go on extensive safari trip and want to upgrade my memory card. I know the model and etc. but cannot decide which way to go: one 128GB or two 64GB. I have K-3 with dual slot, so in both cases I have the same GB in camera at once. normally shoot just RAW with no JPEG copy. I will have access to laptop/transfer in couple of days time to transfer photo if needed.

in two 64GB case I like that I have two cards and kind of more securinty if for whatever reasons one brake down.I also like that I could manage photos better as will have them split by cards not everything in one big card.
for 128GB I like that it would be one card and adding the second card of by 16GB I would get even more memory (but not sure if I need this)

Has anybody had the same choice to be done?

Thanks,
Davis

funny, but I do have this lens even in Brussels Grand Prix version ;) and it is nice, but m42 manual focus fixed lens is not something I am willing to take with me to the other part of the world :D sure, no problem on my daily stroke around the forest. ;)

oh,shure ;) I am now actually quite excited and will have 2-3 month practice time ;) let's see how do I manage

at the end, it was not that bad :D

Hi all who replied ;)

I did my selection today and bought used SIGMA 150-500 mm F5-6.3. HSM DG APO lens. it was quite reasonable on price. now I am waiting for the shipment to arrive and test the real life performance.

Cheers!

Somehow I came to same conclusion. let's see if I keep up with it after some practical experience.

That's spot on ;)

Anyhow, thanks all for you thought and experience. Currently I tend to go for two option and probably my final decision will be dependent on second hand availability ;)

1. Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 with a 1.4x or 2x - this way I could get some extra reach i would need during the trips and also use the lens afterwards for my daily needs.
2. Try to find one of the mentioned Sigmas second hand - with 400 or 500 tele end reach.

somehow i am not too convinced about the contrast, IQ and performance of the cheaper end consumer zooms, including 55-300.

Thanks again,
Davis

I guess not - i have only seen second hand versions.

thanks for such a great input. you have had a lot of testing ;) I am considering thought Sigma 150-500 type as we will be mostly traveling by car and i will have trip with me ;) so the weight is not the main constraint.

interesting option - will need to research a bit more

not really, i would preffer AF in this case. Thanks for the APO hint.

i know, and probably this is were i am more interested to find some solution

Hello

Never thought that I am going to be in the need of such a lens, as on may daily usage I admire and use prime and I am fine with max 200mm range coverage, but due to my upcoming trip to Namibia I need to reconsider a bit and don't know too much about such lenses.

Any experience of which lens did you use to cover long range above 300mm (I guess even 300mm is not enough in desert ;))? What was your best price/value finding?

For me what matter is decent handling and good IQ (especially at tele end). I understand that such lens will not come cheap, but I would like to find price/value best option.

Thank in advance for your advises!

Hi all

I just wonder do you use modern CPL Multicoated filter on you legacy Soviet lenses and if yes, have you noticed improvements?

I have few lenses now to play with during this summer, so want to be prepared?

Thx,

m42 - which?

just got the original one (thought states that made in Philippines not Japan) and am very happy with it. At the end, it was just around 10Euros more than I would have spent for non brand one ;)

tried my 44-2 Helios and yes it wobbles a bit, but that it very little and does not have any discomfort for focusing. so I will never mind this. Then I also tried the Jupiter 37a and there is no wobble at all. It stands strong and firm, so I guess this is Helios not adapter issue.

thanks for the warning, but I could not find such an issue noted in ANY of the reviews in the lens database ;( maybe your m42 adapter was the problem?

Hi All

Just inherited by chance almost brand new Jupiter 37a and Helios 44-2. This is my first encounter with m42 and I was just wondering it is worth to buy Original Penatx m42 adapter or just take whatever cheaper one from China/ebay.

What would be the pros/cons for such a choice? At the end it's just a screw adapter, correct?

Thanks,
superdavis

the same with me and this is what I like, because this is like exercise - see similar to lens rather then trying just to capture anything that could pop in the eye ;)

but challenge is what is nice - I agree you sometimes might miss a shot, but then on the other side - there is also time you win ;)

For me I guess most important is to think and see similar way like the lens on my camera ;) this helps to decide on the lens to put on ;)

I Agree, but can one also say that you should be prepared for what you go out and shoot? Of course, if you just wonder around with trying to shoot what ever comes in eye, then of course - there is nothing better than zoom

Final outcome with one surprise: I did change DA 50 1.8 to FA 50 1.4. trying out in the shop the creamy bokeh and nice blur of FA sold me for it ;)

21mm Ltd 3.2
35mm DA 2.4
50mm FA 1.4
70mm Ltd 2.4

So now I have basic line up primes and let's see how will I manage with that! Now the only thing left is to go out and try to shoot, shooot, shoooooooottt :))

Just an interesting thought:

I started Lend Dilemma threat few days ago swaying between full prime or zoom set up (used to be on zooms) and was mentioning that I was worried when having primes that I would somehow not use them all and change lenses. Then a Veteran Member JOHNX wrote the magic words for me:

You say you're worried about lens change. Why? DSLR's are designed for lens changes

I felt quite silly after reading this because this is exactly why we HAVE DSLR cameras and it is stupid to raise worries like me :D Hope this would encourage someone else and Thanks JOHNX!!!!!

Not to mention that I am now one primes :)))

Yes, this is also what I thought, but honestly I really like the plastic fantastic 35 2.4 - images are sometimes stunning, so looking forward to the same expectations towards 50 1.8 ;)

But you know, maybe I'll fall for Ltds and someday 40/43 would come in my line up

Most probably, i'll also have one sooner or later, but now time for me exceptionally for primes - so I get no temptation to put on zoom and forget primes

I have decided for similar root, so Option 1, but for the begining I would rather go 21-35-50-70 so changing 15 to 21 as initially planned. Then let's see do I miss/need 15 wide.

I am also considering this or even going with WR 18-55 kit lens in case i need zoom. I use zoom mainly for different effect, like zoom blur, color splash etc., so sharpness and F value and not the most important forme.

If initially I have decided to try Prime paths, this is what I should do. I know zooms are always tempting, but maybe it will fade away after couple of month shooting just primes. Otherwise you'll never know until you try.

THX to all!

Option 1 -2 has been considering what I have been shooting so far - my range was 10-70 mm and I was satisfied with it, but Option 3 would give me something new to try ;) Taking pictures are experimenting after all.
But - I shoot a lot inside so need wide (35 mm is ok, but not enough) and also I like city and people. There I agree that 135 mm could be enough for me.

15, 35, 50, 70, 100 is my favorite lengths. This I know, but probably then this is rather dilemma for primes vs zooms.

Not always - if you read reviews then quite often even primes show issues, so no perfect lens at all. They are all compromises.

Hi JohnX

You are very right, because this was my goal and I was deciding between primes/zooms

I guess this is the most difficult choice to decide :D :D

Great quote ;)

Anyhow, thanks for encouragment ;)
