Sticky: Help Us To Help You!

PentaxForums is an amazing resource, a friendly community of users who are ready and willing to help solve problems. But you need to help us to help you, so we’re sharing some tips here for getting help. Responses will be faster, and more useful, if you keep these tips in mind.

You can make life for the volunteering helpers and yourself a lot easier if the very opening post asking for help provides specific information.

Describe everything. The more the better. For example:

Which camera are you using, and which lens? Which exposure settings, which exposure mode?
What was the ambient light like? How far was the subject away? Did it move? Did you shoot hand-held, or with a tripod? Auto-focus or manual?

Please provide a detailed description of the situation where you ran into troubles. Does the problem occur reliably under these circumstances, or is it intermittent? Have you tried changing any settings, what effect – if any – did that produce?

If the problem involves images, no textual description will ever be as clear as a sample image, and the image file – preferably a JPEG straight out of the camera – contains embedded data that’s often useful for diagnosing trouble. So we encourage you to upload a sample or two showing the problem. If you need help uploading an image, just ask!

If the problem is with the camera or lens itself – a control knob or button, for example – it will help if you can show an image of the specific part(s) of the camera or lens that’s malfunctioning. You can certainly upload a cel phone image for this if you only have one camera, or if the camera isn’t functioning.

If you’re looking for location-specific information, such as repair facilities, tell us where you are! We don’t need (or want) your address, but supply some guidelines, please! “Looking for a repair shop in the metro Chicago area” gives us more information than a simple “Help! Who can repair my camera?” Note that we do have a worldwide list of Pentax repair facilities:

Pentax Repair Facilities (Wordwide listing) - PentaxForums.com.

This is just to get your problem-solving started on the right foot. You may have to provide more information to address more specific questions, or to clarify something, but this is a beginning.

Thanks for using PentaxForums!

Cannot take off lens hood for Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 Limited

Carefully put a drop of isopropyl alcohol where hood and barrel meet. Make sure the drop does a 360. Then try again.

When turning with both hands you slightly de-form the hood. Try to put the lens upside down on a grippy sheet of rubber or a rubber mouse pad (hood down) then twist the barrel while putting pressure downwards, forcing the hood into the rubber sheet.

Ricoh GR iiix or Pentax k-1 Ii?

Get a Ricoh WG series point and shoot for walk around use with family, it’s waterproof and rugged, and delivers great images, have owned one for almost a decade, I used it on sandy beaches, during underwater swimming, etc.

Otherwise, get the GRiii if you want great images from a compact form.

I really enjoy my K-1 but it is a larger and heavier camera, not something I would bring along jus in case a photo opportunity arises while out with friends.

K3 III Eyecup Replacement

I had a similar situation with a split eyecup on my K-3 II which uses the eyecup Fs. I was not able to find an economical source for the eyecup Fs. However on Amazon.ca I found a third party (Fanzr brand) version of the eyecup Fr for $10.00 Canadian for a pair. The eyecup Fr is used on K-5, K-7 and several other models that use a slider style diopter adjuster above the viewfinder. Since the K-3 II uses a dial style diopter adjuster I filled the diopter adjuster gap with a short length of a 0.160 inch diameter "screen spline" available from many home repair/hardware stores. The spline material is a closed cell foam that compresses easily and is held in place simply by friction (See attached photo). While light entry is not an issue with the diopter adjuster gap, filling the gap prevents the collection of dust and other potential debris. I used a small pair of needle nose pliers to insert the spline but nimble fingers would also work.

Sticky: Dark exposure problems on K-30 or K-50? Discussion Thread

This morning I realized that I haven't used my K-30 in sometime, maybe 2 or 3 months as my wife was going through a terrible health crisis that required brain surgery in January.
Thank God that was successful and we are getting back to normal. Anyhow I got the K30 out and took some quick shots fully expecting the dark exposure Poltergeist to have returned due to lack of use.
But to my pleasant surprise it's still working fine.

Terrible composition on this photo, Exif: Pentax K-50 (It's actually a K-30 but I did the hack to bring it up to the K-50 firmware), Av mode, F7.1, ISO 400, Pentax SMC DA !:4 16-45mm ED-AL Lens, 24mm, on board flash.
No post processing except to resize, just to show it still works.

I did the non-recommended fix in April of 2020 so it's been almost 2 years. I feel blessed that mine is still working. "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile".
Come to think of it, I will be married 50 years in April too. Yes, I am a very blessed man.

Wow, photogem, quite a lengthy critique.
You struck a nerve with me so I will address a few points:

It's not an inconvenience for me to use my K30 on a regular basis. You're not criticizing that, but I shouldn't make it public? It seems that lack of use is common to those that have reported failures. What's wrong with 'use it or lose it' posts in public? Like this quote from a famous member "It is known and proven that a very regular use usually helps, in a way you could say leaving a car standing all the time unused is not that good for the pistons. Mechanical parts designed for movement are better used." It should sound familiar to you, see your post #347 on pg 24.

The solenoid wasn't dangling on the 2 wires, I had it supported appropriately during the 'procedure'. It's not like it is a boat anchor hanging by a thread.

My post #338, pg 23, explains why I didn't do any soldering. I don't trust my soldering skills enough to wreck a working K100D on a potentially dead K30.
(My post #348 pg 24, indicated my level of soldering skills, you even responded to it)

In my post #340, pg 23 I said that I didn't expect what I did to work. And having working K100D, K20, and K5 IIs I decided not to put any money or any more time into the K30. I also indicated my pleasant surprise that it worked after putting it back together and I also said that I expected it to fail again sooner or later. (see my post #346 pg 24). Why do you seem to imply that I am endorsing what I did as the solution when I said more than once that I expected it to fail again? Does that sound like I am misleading anyone?

Speaking for myself, I know enough about solenoids having worked on cassette and reel-to-reel tape decks that I wouldn't lubricate or sand, I never said that I lubed or sanded. Why do you imply that I did?

Again, I have to thank you for the work you have done, but you seem to be offended by anyone that even 'temporarily' solved their ABF problem without doing it YOUR way, calling them lazy, implying they are misleading others and further implying they did things (lubricating, sanding) that they did not.

I'm sorry that I feel offended by your remarks, I just reviewed the last few pages of this thread and see that you are not singling me out, I guess it's just your style: (see post #345 at the bottom of pg 23.)

Understanding Ricoh/Pentax strategy announcement
Posted By JPT

There has been a lot of commentary on Ricoh Imaging’s announcement that they are focusing on online sales in Japan, but almost all of it has been ill-informed and some of it downright misleading. I want to explain some of the context and why I think it is a confident decision, not a sign of weakness.

I can’t keep this brief, so get ready for a bit of a long read if you have the stomach for it.

The Japanese retail environment

Asahiman on the other site made a brief comment that the retail business is Japan is about 20 years in the past. I know what he means. In the past 20-30 years it has been dominated by some giant chain stores, the most notable are Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera and Yamada Denki, but there are more. These stores put most of the smaller electronics stores out of business in the 1980s and 90s. It seems their time may be coming too, as the internet takes over.

The relationship manufacturers have with retailers is very one-sided as far as I can see. Retailers take their margin (of course - nothing unique there), but they also seem to insist on undercutting the manufacturer’s direct sale price by 10%, even with the margin. By acquiescing to that, all it does is get some space on the shelves, but to get a prominent position in the store there must be some extra incentive (Olympus/OMDS always have prime location, and there is no way they deserve better placement than Canon on sales). The manufacturers also employ sales people and sales assistants to man the sales aisles so the store doesn’t have to. So the stores get a ton of concessions and at the same time make sure that the maker cannot offer a competitive price. The retailers have their cake and eat it. Of course, Ricoh is not in a position to talk about this publicly, but I’m sure it has been a thorn in their side and all manufacturers for decades.

Recently, Ricoh and other makers have been trying to get around this by offering other incentives on their own stores, such as longer warranties and loyalty points to make it more attractive, but the basic price has to remain without discount. Another way Ricoh tries to get around this by selling items as “outlet”, which is refurbished or where the package is spoiled in some way, but they sell without any warranty. It’s the ridiculous game they have to play to sell at a competitive price.

What is happening now is the game is changing:
- The overall sales are falling and cameras have less space in the stores. It’s very obvious that the number of people looking at cameras in those storers has dramatically fallen and the space they devote to cameras has shrunk.
- Internet sales channels have been increasing for a long time, but until now there were still a lot of Japanese people who preferred not to shop online. That’s partly because people tend to live close to physical stores for anything they could want.
- COVID has forced almost everyone to start shopping online and now almost everyone is happy buying from eCommerce sites.
- Ricoh has had some luck with their improved store and direct contact with customers online, but they re restricted, as I mentioned above.
- Ricoh is now quite specialized and differentiated. Customers who want Pentax or GR are going to seek out the places where they can buy them. These are not the kind of cameras that random customers are talked into buying by a salesperson.

So I don’t think the point is to “become Leica” or raise prices above what competitors charge. It is to offer things at a competitive price, while maintaining their own margin. I also don’t think it means their business will shrink because the old model isn’t working for them anyway.

Nonsense estimations of sales

I’ve mentioned this before in other threads, but you see a lot of crazy sales estimates based on different data sources. The most silly one is the BCN market research company. This company collates data from a number electronics stores, but many of them don’t even sell cameras in the first place. Those that do are mostly local electronics stores that only sell a few brands, certainly not Pentax/Ricoh. Then there is Bic Camera, and I’m pretty sure that when you see the 5.8% Ricoh share of DSLRs, that is almost all Bic. Remember that BCN talks up their coverage and only puts these numbers out to drum up business for their paid market research services.

I’m not saying that Pentax/Ricoh has massive sales in Japan, but it is much better than it is in other countries. The point is customers buy Pentax/Ricoh where they are sold, and the sales would show up there, not in the BCN ranking.

Customized cameras

This is a very interesting and creative part of the plan. If they take orders directly, then they can do some unique things for customers. We don’t know how this will work, but I believe this will work something like configuring a computer at Apple.

Again, this is an extension of things Ricoh/Pentax has done before, so they know that they have customers who are interested in it.
- They have offered custom colors (e.g. K-x, K-r)
- They have done custom grip shapes (K20D)
- They have done adjustments to the shutter button (GR Digital)
- They have done versions of cameras with different sensor filters (K-5 II, K-5 IIs, 645 IR models)
- They have done upgraded electronics (K-1 conversion service)
- They have done interchangeable grips (KP)
- They have done extreme tricked out models (J-Limited)
- They have explained some more ideas for customisation (the 6 proposed versions of the K-3 III)

So they certainly have a lot of ideas they could implement, which would be difficult with the old retail model. I’m truly interesting to see how unique a camera you could order with this.

Ricoh stores in “malls”

This part of the announcement is a bit unclear to me. Certainly, they will set up brand stores within popular eCommerce platform like Amazon, Rakuten and Yahoo!. What is not clear is how people will get their hands on the products to try. Based on past practice, I guess they will have some kind of events around Japan or pop-up stores in actual physical retail malls. If they are sending fewer salespeople out to stores, they may be able to do more spot events.

Work/Studio/Atelier style production

I think this is really being misinterpreted. There is an image in Japan of a kind of manufacturing known as “monozukuri”. This typically means something that is created with a high level of craftsmanship and pride - usually at a smaller scale. I think they are trying to channel this kind of image and the idea that they will make something customized for the individual.

In reality, they already have a lot of products that are made in small batches with a lot of manual work. A good example is the Limited lens series, which has never been mass produced. Again, they have done this with success in the past, so it is just focusing in on what they do well. Let’s face it. When Pentax refers to “mass” production, it hasn’t been a very massive mass for a long time.

Only for Japan

Hopefully, what I’ve written will make it clear why the sales channel change is mostly not relevant to other markets. Japan has this unique retail environment and it’s been holding them back. It will be very interesting to see whether other manufacturers follow where Ricoh leads. It seems to me that Nikon, OMDS, Sigma or Tamron might be interested in this if it works. The others would face more hurdles.

Also, I think the customization model might be difficult to adopt overseas. Japan has a very seller-friendly returns policy. Once you buy something, you’re basically stuck with it unless it’s faulty. In the US, it seems you can basically send it back if you change your mind about the purchase. I’m sure Apple can easily sell a returned MacBook with upgraded RAM and SSD in their refurb store, but could Ricoh sell a Scarlet Rouge K-3 III with a monochrome sensor, a wood grip and a customized shutter button? I think it would be a problematic model in the US.

So I expect that Ricoh might just look at what the most popular customizations are in Japan, and sell them selectively as additional models, but without the same level of customization.

Conclusion

What I’ve written above is obviously just my take on the matter. I don’t have any inside knowledge and could well be wrong in some areas. However, I hope I have explained in sufficient detail to convince some readers that the sky is not falling. Most of the commentary on other sites is based on half-understood statistics and no knowledge of the Japan market. The DPR writer admitted he had just put the announcement through Google Translate, and his “solution” was to put it through another online translator.

You can say that Ricoh should have anticipated this and the announcement was badly written. But honestly, they probably believe this is a bold and proactive business strategy. They just didn’t understand the mentality of sites that see every move they make through the filter of “So when are they going bankrupt? Ha Ha Ha!” I’m still astonished by the incredible amateurishness, cynicism and negativity of the online camera press, and the willingness of people to accept it without question.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens on April 1. Don’t you think that if you had a new business model starting, you’d want to have some new products to sell? It might be an opportune time to release a new camera or lens.

Adaptall P/KA and K50 flash

Tamron Adaptall-2 PK/A mounts can suffer from two easily rectifiable problems.
1: The three electrical contacts can tarnish slightly. Polishing these contacts can resolve many intermittent "wierdies". I use a drop of WD40 on a rag to clean them … NEVER squirt aerosol lubricants directly into the camera or lens, it can get everywhere!
2: There's actually a fourth contact necessary! This is a "common" or "ground" contact and should be provided by the mount itself. Unfortunately the Tamron mount was designed before the advent of autofocus and the fourth "ground" contact on the camera aligns perfectly with the tiny screw/pin/rivet to the left of the obvious three contacts, beyond (clockwise from) the black plastic insulator. This is often/usually locked in with a touch of varnish, which acts as an insulator. Scrape this area clean and most problems will disappear ;)

I've used (and continue to use) Adaptall lenses since the '70's. Some of them have followed me through three or four system changes and I have three PK/A mounts, they've all needed the spot of varnish cleaned off.
Enjoy :)

Laowa / Venus Optics has been making some interesting specialty lenses for the past few years and is one of the few third party manufacturers regularly releasing lenses in K mount.

I thought they deserved their own place here.

As the lens info doesn't show up in the Exif data, participants in this thread are asked to kindly include which lens they took each photo with.

Back last (N. hemisphere) autumn we had people wondering why Ricoh was being so tight-lipped about the name of the camera. This is an excellent illustration of why Ricoh is not eager to release the name and details of their cameras long in advance of the release date. It's a lot more difficult for shady retailers to set up convincing sites to trick people if they don't know the name and specs of the camera.

Hello Pentax Forums member,

I started writing on the second edition of my book.
It has been more than twenty years ago that the first edition appeared.
The new edition will be aimed more towards collecting and using old Asahi Pentax cameras and Takumar lenses.
Don't expect the book to come out soon.
It took me 7 years to write the first edition, but it won't take that long for the second.
To be on the safe side financially, the first print order will not exceed a few hundred copies.
If this is successful, a reprint will be done easily.

I hope you will be interested.
I will post a picture of the provisional cover.

ALl these posts seem to be inflamed by negative people who in their arrogant, vain nastyness imagine themselves to be more knowledgeable about what people should do than the people doing Pentax's market research.

Honestly dudes. Pull a Steve Jobs, buck the system, go to your garage start your multi-million dollar camera company, because you know in your hearts, you know better. Stop annoying us sheep who just look at the offerings of the different manufacturers and buy what we think is closest to what we want, instead of obsessing about every little detail.

It is not necessary to know a thing about what goes on inside a camera to be a great photographer. You just have to know how to get the best output from what you have.

Honestly, how much of these "look at me, look at my great ideas, look how much I know. I'm so smart" posts can the forum take?

For most of us, even reading these posts is an act of great tolerance.

You're welcome, Clickclick. :) The underground posts evolved from the aircraft-spotting role of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, fast jets of the 50s to a nuclear monitoring role and a UK-wide network of subterranean bunkers were built, quietly and without fuss, in the 1960s and '70s, located at roughly fourteen-mile intervals across the UK, and in groups of three: one of each group being a 'cluster station' equipped with VHF radio.

Serious Civil Defence cuts in October 1968 by Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his Labour Government left only 873 posts, most of which remained until 'Stand-Down' in the early 1990s. The UKWMO was disbanded rather unceremoniously, to the annoyance of many members, who felt badly let down.

Here's a gratuitous plug for my website (rather old-fashioned by today's standards! :D ) where you'll find a little more. The link takes you to the bunker in my home-town, but you can navigate to the index page where you'll find more. Many of the bunkers went on the market (guide-price typically £50,000 - £70,000 UKP) as wine-cellars, bolt-holes for solitude, etc... Many were filled in and / or sold to mobile phone comanies as they made ideal bases for radio towers. But one national broadcasting chain got its fingers burned when it bought them and subsequently put them back on the market.

Strictly speaking, the Ground-Zero Indicator as used by UKWMO (Royal Observer Corps) was a shadograph with cassettes installed containing sensitised photographic paper. They were mounted just outside the entrance hatch to the underground bunker. The GZI had four cassettes within, and holes in the periphery corresponded to the cardinal compass points and a blast would burn the sensitised paper. The direction could then be read off a graticule marked in degrees of elevation and azimuth.

The paper within gradually darkened without resort to chemical development. Two boxes of printing-out paper (100 sheets) were stored at each post. The papers in the GZI would be changed regularly during 'sabre-rattling': twice a day in summer and every alternate day in winter.

And yes... Somone had to exit the bunker, close the hatch behind them to keep effects of blast out, retrieve the cassettes and re-enter the bunker with them, after having fitted new cassettes. In the presence of fall-out, the observer retrieving the cassettes would decontaminate themselves in the bunker annexe and pass the satchel with the cassettes inside through to the control room.

---------- Post added 10-18-2019 at 09:57 PM ----------

Here's a pic of the (now filled-in) UKWMO Royal Observer Corps post near Cockermouth, Cumbria - one of the 687 posts closed down in the 1968 Harold Wilson Civil Defence cuts. The location of where the GZI is mounted is on top of the entrance hatch air-vent (RHS in my pic) and is the small, ever-so-slightly conical plate on the top.

They were installed at dozens of bunkers usually poiting towards nearest likley targets. At high states of alert the bunkers would be manned and they would report in as to height, megatonage, blast radius etc. The bunkers were equipped with maps, slide rule style calculators and map overlays so after the bang the observing station could work out how much damage, casualty count, radiation levels etc.
It would all be reported back via phone and telex ( valve powered so more immune to EMP) to Burlington/Turnstile which was a massive nuclear bunker and where the government would hold out in event of Armageddon........nuclear combat toe to toe with the Russkis.....
Many local councils had nuke bunkers with these as well to act as local coordination points. The observer corp bunkers were spread out all over the UK very often in isolated locations where they were unlikley to get a direct hit.

I'm glad to hear it, I really wish for a good Pentax support center.
My experience with Precision is ambivalent: years ago they repaired a body, a lens and did a CLA on another lens on short turnarounds. Last year however it took them 4 months to do a prepaid upgrade of K1 to K1 Mark II, after they quoted me an additional work item for replacing corroded parts near the bottom plate, with which I agreed. Only after I ping-ed Ricoh to expedite the replacement parts shipment, and waited through another round trip to Precision due to infamous broken mode dial, did I finally get my K1 Mark II. Which, to their credit, works splendidly and is a worthy upgrade. And, by the way, Precision waived the additional repairs cost. Best wishes to them, after all.

I sent in my K-70 which was covered under a Pentax extended warranty that I purchased.

They did the firmware upgrade and cleaning in addition to the repair in one day and shipped it out the next day!

I was away from my house when UPS tried to deliver it so I got online with UPS and changed the date for the next attempt. However, UPS dropped the ball and returned it to Precision! I called UPS and they totally admitted it was their mistake.

I called up Precision to confirm they received the camera back. While I was on the phone they confirmed they had it. They said that they would try to get it back out that day, which they did.

Kudos to Precision, awesome service.

What B&W Developer to Choose

First, if you have some "rare" shots, then this is not the roll to discover and learn the pros and cons of various developers. Each developer has its own pros and cons relative to the film used, the desired characteristics, and price/convenience.

Here's one of many sites that analyze and breakdown commonly used film developers:
Choosing a B&W Film Developer | La Vida Leica!

Knowing what you shot and what you want out of the image (sharpness vs. grain vs. shadow detail) will help you decide what may be "the best" after reading that link.
Price and speed of developing are only a factor if you DIY.

In our school lab that I run, we use Kodak XTOL as it's a jack of all trades and has a good overall balance for many different types of films.
Of the choices in your case, I'd go with ID-11 for the standard tier. If you're willing to pay for a higher tier, then Xtol.

From my experience, I'd only use TMax developer with TMax film and DD-X with Ilford Delta film. There's no harm in using TMax or DD-X with other films, but they are more expensive and I haven't seen any benefit.

It takes time and a lot of trial and error to see and learn how different films are affected by different developers. Kentmere 400 is a decent "value" film, but even using Ilford HP5+ 400 would be a slight step up and I would suggest you use the same developer with different films to find your "best" or favorite and then use the same film with different developers to see which gives you the look that has the aesthetic you're looking for.

In general, Kodak chems work best with Kodak films, Ilford dev with Ilford film, etc. because they are tested and formulated for optimization. Kentmere is owned by Ilford, and is almost the same, but not identical.

And BTW, in the linked article, they often refer to one developer as comparable to another. This is because the chemical ingredients of those comparable developers are nearly identical with a very minor tweak to avoid patent infringement.
