I think this is a K1000, just a few seconds into this trailer for the upcoming movie, After Yang.

Also looks like an A lens.

Pentax/Ricoh and Billingham bags

I found this video showing Pentax and Ricoh products prominently displayed among expensive Billingham bags in South Korea. There are Thetas, a K-1, a 645Z (at 0:58 and 1:12), and even a few Q's right at the very end.

Youtu.be

It's a bit surprising to me (as an American) to see Ricoh in such high-end department store displays. A few years ago, we had the WG's and K-50's at Target discount department stores in the US. Looks like someone's been climbing the social ladder ...

Although it was shot in South Korea, the video is posted on Billingham's home YouTube channel. In fact it is only one of two videos on their channel as of this posting. Maybe this will improve Ricoh's exposure and image outside of Asia!

I'm sure Marc Newson would be jealous!

Why do companies remove In-lens Image Stabilization in k-mount version of lenses?

Like Sony, Panasonic also now has dual IS in the GX85/GX80, combining OIS with IBIS. It is incredibly effective across all focal lengths. It is just as effective for stills as it is for video.

So yes, it can be done.

First try at doing video on the K-1

That's the electronic shake reduction in play. The camera takes a mild crop of the image, and tries to stabilize the majority of the scene, which in this case is the engine, but then the background shifts around. Another tell-tale sign is the rolling shutter "jello cam" effect you can see in the engine -- if it were stable, then you wouldn't see it wobble. Probably best to have SR off in this circumstance.

Looks like a fun show!

Cicada caught emerging from its shell - MX-1 macro timelapse

Great video, thanks for sharing! I think the MX-1 is great for macro, but I have not used the timelapse feature.

Sorry, did you mean the total elapsed time shown in the video was 8 minutes, or 1-1/2 hours?

I probably would have taken a shot anyways just because pixels are cheap and reusable. Then I might at least remember the moment.

But either way, even if you have the "right" lens with you, that doesn't guarantee you will get the shot every time. Sometimes the camera is in your bag when a fleeting moment occurs. Or there's a solar eclipse on a rainy day. You can't win them all. Just keep walking along and waiting for opportunity to meet preparedness.

What photography Rule-Of-Thumb have you quit (or you are trying to quit) following?

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but wanted to point out that for small-sensor cameras, and the smaller focal lengths that typically go along with them, the saying should probably be more like "f/5.6 and be there," or "f/4 and be there". That will produce good depth-of-field, while avoiding diffraction. The diffraction limit is based on properties of visible light, and doesn't care about equivalence, whereas the f-stop depends on the actual focal length of the lens. This is why small-sensor cameras often incorporate built-in ND filters to handle bright conditions. Stopping down to f/16 or maybe f/32 (just pulling out numbers) can be fine on medium format, but not on a Pentax Q. In other words, f/32 on a typical medium format lens is not too small, but f/32 on a typical Q lens would be really tiny and cause diffraction problems.

I'm really not trying to be pedantic! I love the underlying concept of "f/8 and be there". :)

I used to think that if "the best camera is the one that you have with you," then "I'll just carry the best DLSR (K-3) that I have, everywhere."

But I have come to realize how uncomfortable people can get when they see a big camera. So I am trying to force myself to carry one of my smaller cameras (Q, MX-1, etc), and put up with the loss of IQ in favor of a more relaxed shooting environment.

In other words, "the best pictures happen when people (subjects, bystanders, or security guards) are not annoyed by a big scary camera." I have absolutely no interest in becoming a street photographer, but sometimes, it helps to think like one. It's not about what I'm willing to carry, it's about what I can get away with carrying.

It's a joke! I've watched almost every TCSTV episode and Chris Niccolls is very fair to Pentax. Actually I would even dare say he is something of a Pentax and Ricoh fan, although not a "fanboy" by any means, as his criticisms are pretty fair assessments, IMO.

Jordan Drake is a PF member here and occasionally posts.

I'm sure they are reading this now and the irony of this thread is not lost on them.

How is the Pentax K-1 Video?

Just do a quick search in YouTube for "rolling shutter", as it is also known. It mostly affects video, due to the way most CMOS sensors are electronically read. Like purple fringing, once you see it, it is hard not to notice it.

It is less common in stills due to the way mechanical shutters work, but can be seen in stills of very fast moving things like propeller blades. Again, just search in Google and you will find plenty of still images.

Edit: See this article on Wikipedia:

Yes, if the pin is rounded, it should be safe on your K-5.

That looks like one of the newer Ricoh pins with a rounded head, in which case it should be perfectly safe. The troublesome pins are the ones that are cylindrical, with a flat tip.

On Sunday, I was using a new kitchen gadget, one of those vegetable slicer mandolin things, and I cut off a tiny little part of the very tip of my pinky. Just a little corner of skin, fortunately. The skin is a bit thick there, near the corner of my fingernail, kind of where one might develop a hangnail anyhow. It hardly bled and is healing fine.

Cactus RF60 Not Working in Hotshoe

Yes, I can fire my RF60, using the hotshoe on my K-5 and my K-3.

You can test the RF60 easily, by shorting the center pin on the bottom of its hotshoe, to the ground pin (look at the side of the hotshoe), using a bent paper clip. It's safe, you won't get shocked or anything. If the RF60 fires, then you know the basic trigger circuitry in the RF60 is working.

I'm guessing this is a focus-by-wire implementation, like most (all?) E-mount lenses. Whereas probably (and hopefully) a K-mount implementation would be mechanically coupled. I'd go for that, even if it didn't have a quick-shift clutch mechanism.
