Update Number *Twelve* from my Afghan Deployment

Alex,

Let me start off by saying the pics are wonderful – I rarely visit PentaxForums, however I visit every once in a while just to see if you’ve posted a new update. A significant aspect of your updates is the fact that they have the ability to offset the schtuff we get from NBC, ABC, CBS, and yes, even FOX. Unfortunately you are not reaching quite as large an audience as them, but if it changes the hearts and minds of just a few who have the same attitude as the friend you referenced, then it’s an ideal complement to your paying job. Secondly, I’m definitely not trying to go into a “black hole”, but your girlfriend is correct and it’s an issue that might have been addressed by our soldiers who liberated those oppressed by their evil leaders (except for the Soviets) after WWII, but in today’s politically correct world, that will never happen. In that case, the great jobs (both soldier & part-time war correspondent) you are doing matter all the more - keep up the great work!

Two different Pentax K-r offerings

Nesavi,

First off I'm not an expert on this matter, and secondly I'm not sure of pricing wherever you're at, but after you consider those two facts let me say...

1) If I was looking at the second of the two choices here in the USA, I would expect to be paying about $700 if the kit was new or less if it was used, and those numbers are probably high, considering it's a discontinued item.

2) For just a relatively little more money, spec wise (I don't know these lenses) the first kit is probably a better lens kit, and the pictures appear to show a case and small memory card with it making it an even better deal if you don't already have those items.

3) The K-5 deal is probably the best and would probably make you the happiest, IF it's truly within your budget.

They're both nice cameras - hope that helps.

Multiplier for natural resolution on K-5 display

Ron,

I was unaware of that, but that makes what I have been seeing and what everyone has been saying, gel and make perfect sense. 307,200 dots with it being linear would be about 8x and that would explain why I convinced myself "the display seems to do a really fine job of smoothing out" the 8x magnification. The little bit of what I was thought might be noise was probably just greater detail, or a combo of the two. I sort of feel like a doofus, but question is answered, I understand why, and problem solved!

Thank you everyone,
Mike

Ron,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm new to Internet forums and don't understand.

True, I am pixel peeping as my hands aren't extremely steady (even with shake reduction), and if I'm in a situation where I want a crisp shot for a large printout, a means of assurance that I nailed it would have been nice.

Matfalc,

Thanks for the reply. 640x480 equals 307,200 dots, and the K-5 owners manual says the resolution is approximately 921,000 dots. I believe a megapixel is defined 1,000,000 so I considered that close enough to round it up.

Adam, Jeff, Deadwolfbones,

Thanks all for taking the time to reply. Examing some pictures really close in the daylight (my eyes don't work as well in the artificial light after the sun goes down as they used to) I've come to the conclusion that 4x is correct, but the display seems to do a really fine job of smoothing out the greater magnification. That being the case, I'm not really sure whether the display helps very much towards determining full-sized sharpness. Not exactly the same thing, but sort of like looking at a 4x6 to determine whether it's going to look nice at 13x19.

Thanks again,
Mike

If I wanted to try and check the sharpness of a shot on the camera display, what would the most accurate magnification level to use. Since the K-5 has a resolution of about 16 megapixels and the display is about 1 megapixel would a magnification of 4x be most accurate, or am I missing something? Any insight would be appreciated.

Weather & Dust Resistance

Hi,

I have a question regarding "weather resistant" lenses. I'm looking for a quality close up zoom lens and would have purchased the DA* 16-50mm F2.8 were it not for horror stories I've seen while doing research. I've seen many opinions in these threads that say something to the effect of "remember, they're only weather resistant, not waterproof" along with "any quality built lens should do okay." One of my main reasons for purchasing the K-5 was because of it's sealing not only for rain, but also for dust. I live off a dirt road, an in the summertime I can write my name in the dust on my end table about three days after I've last dusted, but I haven't found anyone discussing dust, just water. Bearing in mind that dust is a big issue for me, do you think that I would still be okay with any quality built lens (like the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM) or no? Additionally, does anyone have experience with the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM and harsh environmental conditions?
