Is it time to change "kit" concept?

I would guess that the most of the people who by a DSLR with a kit lens don't care enough or don't know enough about the image quality of the lens to know the difference between it and a higher quality lens. If the people buying the camera don't care then it just becomes an extra expense for the company which is passes to the buyer making the overall price less attractive than the competitor.

The idea of a camera kit, especially in the lower tier models (k-r, rebel line) is to get a functioning kit in the hands of a new user as cheaply as possible, then sell them better lenses as their abilities grow into them.

If you already have an idea of what you're doing, you probably have some glass already and you're more likely to buy body only.

TLDR; why include expensive glass and drive up the price when you can provide cheap glass to people who don't care.

As an update, I did eventually get my K-30 replaced but because I bought it in the US from B&H, Pentax Canada gave me a hard time, however, that is a whole other story in of itself.

My new K-30 seems to be working fine as far as weather seals go, but while I was cameraless for 3 months I ended up buying a K5 iis when it was on sale around boxing day. I'm happy to report that it too has worked fine in wet conditions, including having been used in fairly heavy snow.

Does Pentax have worldwide warranty?

I bought my K30 at B&H and when the card slot filled with water because the seal on the door failed I ended up having to contact Pentax US, get them to mail me an International Warranty card (no charge) and then send it to Pentax Canada with the card. They still charged me $50 to have it repaired (well, it didn't ever get repaired but that's a whole other story). I should note though that if I knew someone in the US who I could have shipped it to and then had them send it to Pentax US it would have been repaired free of charge.

I live in Halifax. Henry's is all we have. Carsand Mosher's are all closed locally, Atlantic Photo doesn't carry Pentax, nor does Future shop or Best Buy, and despite Pentax Canada listing Blacks as an authorized Pentax dealer on their website, Blacks does not stock Pentax Cameras.

My only other options are online, and B&H had the best price and had it in stock.

Yeah, they're going to fix it but because Pentax has a horrible presence in Canada (only available at Henry's and hardly ever in stock let alone in store to try out) I bought it through B&H. Now Pentax is charging me to fix it even though the K30 had only been out for 3 months before it broke. The result is I'll no longer be buying anything from B&H which is sad because I had two very good experiences buying through them, but it invalidates warranties.

Don't get me wrong, I love Pentax's gear, I've been shooting Pentax camera's since I started photography in high school with my k1000 but their repair process in Canada is without a doubt the worst I've ever had to deal with.

I used my k-30 in some light rain with the 18-135 WR and the SD card slot leaked and fried it. It's now been at Pentax Canada for 4 weeks being repaired and I've heard nothing from them about when I might see it again. Don't assume "weather sealed" means "can get wet".

Anyone use the K30 in the rain?

So after a day and a half I turned my k30 on and everything seems to work ok except for the mode dial. I turn through it and it will only switch between P, Movie, user 1, and scene, no matter what I set it to. Looks like I'll be contacting B&H later today about it. I know it's been 45 days since I bought is so I'm past their 30 day return policy, does anyone know if they might still replace a faulty unit?

I was out in some not very heavy rain today, and after 5 minutes or so I noticed the rear LCD went dark. Not totally off, just about half brightness. I thought that was weird and decided to cut short my first trip out in the rain with my new camera so I went home to get out of it, which took about 5 more minutes, so I was out for around 10 minutes total.

When I got in I turn my K30 on to look at the pics I had shot and I noticed it made a weird buzzing like noise when it turned on and switched immediately into Live-view. I tried to turn live-view off and it wouldn't work and that's when I noticed it was jumping between different shooting modes, Tv, Av, and P, even though I wasn't turning the mode dial.

I knew this was likely due it water so I immediately turned it off, dried off the outside with a towel and removed the battery, SD card and lens. When I popped the sd card out it was wet inside and the PC port on the opposite side of the body also had water in it despite both having been securely sealed while outside. There was no water inside the lens, which was the 18-135 WR kit lens.

Now I'm waiting for it to dry for a few days before I try it out again, and I'm praying I don't have to send it back but I don't think I'll ever use it near water again, which is the main reason I bought it as I'm often outdoors shooting in damp environments.

Has anyone had any issues with weather sealed pentax camera's leaking?

Metz Mecablitz 58-af2 - Works With K-30?

I can confirm that the 58 AF2 does work with the K-30. I've been using them as a pair for just over a month now and I've had no issues at all. I should note though that I've been using it in manual mode. PTTL mode is selectable but I can't confirm it works as intended.

Why do you shoot Pentax?

I started photography in High School about 15 years ago. My first SLR was a Mamiya ZE which I proceeded to accidently break during a protest in Quebec City in 2001. While looking for a replacement that could handle the kind of usage I required I read a Nat Geo article by a man who was discribing all the adventures he'd been through with nothing but his k1000. He described it as the AK-47 of cameras.

That completely sold me. I found one locally and grabbed it with a 50m 1.7 and shot it for years. When it came time for me to make the switch to digital, I stuck with Pentax based solely on how my k1000 never let me down. I grabbed an ist-D and was quite pleased with it.

Since then I've been through a k-x and am now on my k-30 and not one of them has let me down yet.

I have to admit though, that I tend to route for the underdog so that is a small part of why I stuck with Pentax, but all the quality of their bodies is the main reason. The large selection of easy to find, inexpesive lenses sure helps too.

I'm a photographer, and I'm proud to shoot Pentax
