perfect focus, very well done Wolfgang, for it was your only, fast and surprise take.
haha, forum legend and vintage lens expert.. I'd rather say enthusiastic dilettante.
it has been a while since I posted here. Gear being small and light, as are my Pentax *istDs and K-x, always has been a priority for me. That had made me, once they came to the market, switch to mirrorless cams with small and light, also old manual rangefinder and / or halframe lenses.

a few old takes with my S-M-C Takumar f1.4/50 on Pentax *istDs from Nepal 2009, might have shown one or the other, recently re-edited:

still keep my Taks and still like my Taks very much, but haven't used them much on my mirrorless cams.

$199 focal reducer speed booster adapter Pentax PK K to Sony NEX

Just found out that my statement that the K mount needs to have a lock for the M42 adapter to lock was wrong. That means that I am quite positive that a M42 adapter will work on the Pentax K lens turbo. However just how well it will work does depend on the exact make of the K mount on the lens turbo!

came to this conclusion after checking again the fit of my original Pentax M42 > K mount adapter. On a Pentax body it locks fine, on my Pentax K > Sony E mount adapter it does have a play but will be tight once the M42 lens is mounted. I could not make the M42 > K adapter lock in my K > Leica M adapter ( for my Ricoh GXR ) but found out that it does lock fine if I first mount the M42 > K adapter on the M42 lens and then lock it into the K > M adapter, which, if one wanted to change the M42 lens used, is less practical. Sounds confusing but it isn't really..;)

great, thank's a lot for that! I can't wait for your samples!
I have great hopes for this adapter, made by a company with a record of making decent optics why should it not perform just as well as the M.bones

Do you have a M42>Pentax K adapter? If so I'd be most curious to find out if it works on the focal reducer! I am afraid though that the focal reducer most likely won't have a lock for the M42 adapter and therefore the M42 adapter will rotate which makes use difficult unless one finds a way how to lock it in place.

sweet :)
with the APS-C sensor this new GR is the real digital successor of the famed analog GR-1 street shooter! I don't want to put the previous GRDs down, they are great cams in their own right, but their smaller sensor made for a very different IQ and dof than those of the analog original.

yes, I am sure :)
I was a Minolta guy too, see my first camera: ( photo of it was taken with a Jupiter-9, not with a Takumar, therefore only linked: ) Minolta XG1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
when I got into digital this was my beloved toy: ( taken with SMC Takumar f1.4/50mm on Pentax K-x )

When I was looking for my first dSLR Minolta had gone, but I already had bought my first Takumars before and then my camera of choice was Pentax +istDs, later K-x.
Obviously you are a real specialist, all I can say regarding colors is that I always have liked the Takumar colors, though differences of color rendering was much more decisive on the CCD sensor of the *istDs than on the later CMOS sensor cameras.
Since the Konica Minolta A2 I have been waiting for an 'EVIL successor', the A2 not only had taken away the fear of an EVF but more so had made me aware of the many advantages, also of the EVF articulating. The NEX5N is that long awaited successor, though my ideal camera would look a bit different, I have a very clear image of it in my mind, let's say roughly between the K.M.A2 and NEX5N

very, very sweet photos kcobain, congrats!!

OftheMano I much agree. Each lens has an individual characters which can clearly be seen in 'real' photos, some more, other less uniquely so.
My list of favorites is similar to your's, S-M-C 1.4/50, Takumar 2/58, Pen-F 1.4/40 and Auto Takumar 2/55 are lenses I would not want to part with and each for a different reason, and there are others I could choose just as well. The Takumar 2/58 does not look good in this test but how very uniquely beautiful it renders.
I don't know the Planar, I have a copy of Minolta Auto-Rokkor-PF 1.4/58 but it's optical performance is not representative, it has a faulty rear glass and therefore it took not part in the test. I was hoping and expecting that it renders similar to the famous Rokkor 1.2/58 but that for a fraction of the price, actually already bought a second copy but it will take some time before I have it in my hands.

thank you Arnold. The CZJ doesn't fare well in the test, nevertheless it takes very beautiful photos, a similar case as the Takumar 2/58, I personally prefer the colors of the later

Agreed, most normal lenses perform well, nevertheless for me there are decisive differences, also in performance. A sharpness test as presented hardly can show most of them, but imo even small differences of e.g. wide open sharpness of fast lenses are rather important.
Generally a test like this is very useful to get to know my own lenses better. Sample variation could play a role though and therefore I should caution against drawing general conclusions. On the other hand in this test all the variations of the 1.4/50 Takumar / Pentax consistently perform at the top level and that does permit drawing conclusions ;)

regarding corner sharpness another caution, specially the left lower corner / and the left lower corner crops must be seen with 'field curvature' in mind, please see my third post half down this page and the following: 25+ "normal lenses" test, comparison

Eventually I shall do a bokeh comparison too, but most likely I won't find time during the coming week, and if not unfortunately it will take almost another year until I shall have access to most of my lenses again :(

amazing, I always admire you how you get the focus THIS very precisely on the eyes, and that with a f1.4/50!
congrats for you 8 element Super Tak, and even more so for your extremely rare 85mm f/4.5 Ultra-Achromatic Takumar!

made a 'sharpness shootout of about 32 'normal lenses', including all the versions of f1.4/50 Takumars, total 12 Takumars, also Pentax M f1.7, f1.4/50 and Pentax A f1.7/50, 2 Rokkors, a Nikkor, 2 Yashinons,:the OM 1.8/50, Pen-F and a few rangefinder lenses
shot in RAW on NEX5N, converted to jpeg in LR3.5 with default setting, that is no editing, no contrast or sharpening added
Collection: sharpness shootout
there are also sets by f stop and crops, e.g. 'center crop @ f2': f2 center crops - a set on Flickr
if as slideshow don't forget to click 'show info' to see which lens used
hope it's of interest for some of you, and only to see how well the Taks compare ;)

cheers,
kuuan

Hi Vladimir,

well, I must admit that you misunderstood, I did not offer those to you to choose from but simply wanted to share my find of a "third, undocumented" version" of the Super Takumar f1.4/50mm and yes, all 3 are in working order.

I also have a defect Pentax M f1.4/50 which I keep for spare parts, but if you think that it would serve you I would send it to you for little money

cheers,
andreas

there are two documented versions of the Super Takumar f1.4/50mm, the early 8 element version and the later 7 element version.
I happen to have a version which has most of the signs of the 8 element version, the red focus mark is to the right of the numeral 4, A/M switch says "A" and "M", it says "2" on the aperture ring instead of just having a dot, BUT it lacks the protruding rear element. I suppose that optically it is a 7 element version but in the body of the earlier 8 element, a lens produced during the transition period?

see for yourself:

I sure will go back to Taiwan too, very lovely people and a beautiful place!

Tim I think actually that the lens and camera handled the highlights on the left upper corner very well. After all it's white floor tiles reflecting the strong tropical sunlight of Bali coming from just a meter behind through the fully open store front of this restaurant.
From what you say I think that you are simply overexposing when using this lens. With M42 lenses on my K-x, because I find it's metering to be too far off, I have not been using Av mode but M mode and green button which imo meters much more accurately.

another very recent photo taken with it in Bali ( but well, actually both not taken with Pentax dSLR but NEX5N which meters any lens accurately in A and S mode )

kuuan

thank you very much Arnold, very kind :)

wow, really? I just was in Taiwan for the first time this July, but only for 3 weeks. So I haven't seen very much of this fabulous country yet, but enjoyed my time very much! This photo was taken a few days ago in Bali.

right! my teachers could not speak English very well but trained us to write essays with less than 8 grammatical or spelling mistakes, if there were more one would fail. We learned to "construct" complicated and "correct?" sentences which, if spoken, even native speakers would hardly understand.

Usually I speak English with people who don't speak it all that well. To speak clearly, to be easily understood I gave up trying to sound like a native speaker and most of all..I speak slowly and try to minimize words to the most important. That sometimes even means making grammatical mistakes on purpose, but if I frequently talk with the same person I better concentrate to avoid that.

hm..sounds reasonable, but I don't have any problems with my Auto Tak 3.5/35 and very much like the colors it renders.
Nothing special, just my most recent photo taken with it

kuuan

amazing the clarity of your photos yiptwo, and good looking oof rings!

haha, it was after 9 years of studying English that I went, for the first time, to an English speaking country. People would say: "you are talking in English, but..what are you talking about?" In an acquired language it is most difficult to be short and precise!
In return If English was learned through schooling, not primarily through talking with native speakers, which usually is the case, long sentences may be more easily understood than being too short.

very beautiful pastel colors! have some of you too received comments of photos taken with a Takumar regarding "pastel colors"? I have quite often..

the S-M-C Takumar is my favorite 50mm too, well, actually my favorite lens of all.

Right Duc, that's him! Within local photographers he is 'famous' ;) I know a circle of photographers in Saigon who use vintage gear, they are very particular with it and most of it looks like new. They all know him and have used his services.
I am with you and would be hesitant to let him open my more valuable lenses. However even if there must be some dust after Teo's service, inspecting them with flashlight I can't see it. Certainly every vintage lens, and also the 3 or 4 of mine he had worked on and cleaned, had much more dust inside collected over the years before it was opened for service than it ended up with after. I had used other lens repair men in Saigon who work inside, but watching Teo doing his job is great, all looks so easy and effortless, he is very experienced and very good!

wow, beautiful photo dfujevec, great sky, depth and composition!

thank's guys, I thought you would like the photos of the lens repair ;)

I was not so much concerned of him not being clean enough, but I must say that I could not help thinking about what would happen if his little working tray would get knocked over, after all it simply sits on top of a cardbox and he is sitting on a somewhat busy street corner!

look at those - eek, how one of the modern AF zoom look from the inside
( because they had not been taken with a Takumar only posted as links, lens used was Tamron Adaptall 01A, a manual 35-80mm zoom on Pentax K-x )

hope that you will be happy with the adapter Togu!

( yes, one may say I travel a lot. Most of the time I don't feel like traveling though but going to a number of places every year for specific reasons and simply living my life. To Bali I have come every year since abt. 20 years, time ago for 4 or 5 months, now it's usually for just about 5 or 6 weeks. Similar it has been with Japan and Nepal, during these last years it was Vietnam I spent more time than anywhere else. Therefore I not consider myself living in Bali, or any other place really, or better I should feel I live in all of them ;) Sometimes I go to some new place and 'travel', this year made two short trips of just 2 weeks each to China and Taiwan. )

A good number of my lenses, specially Takumars and Pentax K, I bought in Japan for less than I would expect having to pay in Europe. Of some specially early Takumars which typically are harder to find outside Japan I could not resist and bought more than one copy and resold some if someone showed interest ( a list of available lenses at the profile at my flickr ). These last 2 years however the unfavorable exchange rate makes good deals very hard to come by. A few years ago I made a bargain with two lenses in India where I guess one still could have luck, a few I bought in Vietnam and the Philippines but not cheap, prices there usually are even higher than in Europe.

One real good thing is that I found people in various countries that can service old lenses for little money, e.g. here my Vivitar f2/28 gets it's focus ring smoother again right on the street :) in Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon, so does my Auto Takumar f2.8/105 seen in the background:

haha, and smoking while doing it

both taken with S-M-C 1.4/50 on K-x

best greetings,
andreas
