Pentax Meeting on Nov 27: Q&A about future products (nothing very specific)

I’ll explain the Q&A part of the Pentax Meeting event in this post. When registering to attend the session, there was a space to add a question to the product planning team. Obviously with 2000+ attendees, it wasn’t possible to answer every question one by one, but they grouped them together to come up with the top three themes. They were pretty much what you’d expect, so counting up from the 3rd to the 1st most common question, here is how they responded to them.

Q. Is there going to be a successor to the KP or K-70
A. Right now they’d really like us to buy the K-3 III - they were smiling as they said this. However, they realize it’s important to have a more accessible model, because there needs to be an attainable way for beginners to experience a DSLR. Beyond that they didn’t say anything specific, but we can assume there will be a low or mid-range APS-C camera at some point.

Q. What lenses are coming?
A. They started by apologizing that it had taken so long to deliver on the roadmap. They are working on the remaining lenses, but that is not all. They are also working on several lenses that are not on the roadmap, and some of these might come out before the roadmapped items. Reading between the lines, I get the feeling they don’t want to put new things on the roadmap unless they are really sure they can deliver. They asked users for ideas for what lens they’d like, and the 135mm and super telephoto seemed to be the most requested in the Zoom chat.

Q. What about the next full frame camera?
A. For a start, the K-1 II is their full frame model for time being. It is getting a firmware update in December to add a new custom image mode. It doesn’t look like it will be replaced in the immediate future. They talked about how difficult and how long it would take to come out with a model with a new prism like the K-3 III. It sounds like the expectation of a full frame version K-3 III with the prism of K-1 II is the most realistic.

They also have other ideas for cameras like a model with the same body design as the K-1 but a lower resolution to enable faster operation. They also mentioned the idea of a full frame manual model, which could be a lot smaller than the K-1 by removing some of the automation. It was interesting to hear that the designers do really think about some of the more out-of-the-box ideas, like people discuss on the forums.

Other parts of the event today
- A showcase of the DFA21mm Limited. They did this by having five of the developers go out and take pictures with the lens that they think are both good images and that illustrate something the think is characteristic of the lens. This brought up various stories about the development of the lens. Then they asked the audience to vote for the the best set. It was quite a good way to talk about the lens and show that the designers are keen photographers themselves.
- Showing the winners of a photo contest
- A video made with user submitted photos of their cameras. It was done like a 102 version of the Pentax 100 video they did two years ago.
- A giveaway of cool display of the individual lens elements of the DFA21 Limited, like a real version of a lens element diagram in a glass case. The contest itself was a bit of a shambles though.
- The new President Noboru Akahane closed with a speech at the end. It was just a nice closing speech. He didn’t really say much about strategy or anything like that.

Obviously, this was an engagement event, not a product announcement. The main feeling was of a company trying to be close to its customers and trying to listen. I honestly thought they would show a mock-up of a lens or two, but it was a not an event like a press conference. We probably have to wait for something more public like CP+ for that

Can too much technology stifle creativity?

With respect, Roland, I'd challenge at least some of this. Specifically, art does not mean artefact. An artefact is indeed a man-made object - perhaps an item of utility such as a brick, tool, cup, piece of clothing; or, equally, an objet d'art such as a painting, sculpture or decorative item, for example. Art, on the other hand, is the expression of creative imagination and/or interpretation, intended to elicit feeling and emotion, or to challenge us in some way. That expression may take the form of a tangible, enduring artefact - a physical object such as a painting, sculpture, photograph etc. - or it may be intangible, abstract and/or ephemeral in nature, e.g. dance, theatre or musical performance.

[These are my own definitions, but I believe they'll broadly tally with respected sources such as the OED, Merriam-Webster etc.]

This is a perfect example. A urinal is an artefact - a man-made object borne of utility. Duchamp's "Fountain" is art... He imagined and subsequently created the concept of modifying, re-purposing and representing a ready-made artefact as an artistic work - cocking a snook at the establishment, challenging the very notion and limits of what constitutes art and eliciting emotions (among them, anger or outrage) therein. Had I been alive at the time, I'd probably have been as resistant to his concept as the traditionalists... but there's no doubting that creativity was involved (if not, one might reasonably argue, skill).

Art and creativity are inextricably linked, the former being a product of the latter. Artefact and creativity, not necessarily so...

My apologies to the OP for venturing rather off-topic, here :o

Modern cameras integrate 100 years of photographic technique and knowledge and permit a novice to take perfectly exposed images. "Art" depends on the content of the images, though.

Unless you shoot for a living, the best camera is the one you have it on you most. Since I got my K-1, the use of 645d has decreased dramatically. Lately I got myself a GR, and now I cannot let go. You see where I am getting at. Size has lots of implications.

May I suggest you look at Benro. They have tripods that are very sturdy in both aluminum and carbon-fiber and their prices are very reasonable. Benro also has ball heads and 3-way gear heads.

I use a Benro for my panos with an auto pano head and have done one 150º wide and 4 rows in height, so I know there is no problem with flex or movement.

The prism in the K-3iii is significantly larger than the one in the K-3ii. Not much room for the GPS antenna without making the housing much larger.

The challenge of the new Pentaprism

One of the Challenger stories, High-grade viewfinder system, reveals a particularly difficult development -- the new pentaprism. From previous product stories, we gained some insight into its motivation. Now we hear from the designers. The pandemic hampered the development for a reason that might not be obvious immediately.

High-grade viewfinder system Designed to achieve high standards | Challengers | PENTAX K-3 Mark III | RICOH IMAGING

"Development of high-refraction glass pentaprism"

"It was only after we began developing this new pentaprism, though, that we realized that we were faced with a formidable task, especially at the processing and assessment stages. High-refraction glass is a highly rigid and fragile material. It was extremely hard work to cut the prism’s edges at specific angles. Initially, we were planning to develop and process this pentaprism at our main pentaprism production factory in Vietnam, and started testing more than 200 production methods. But things didn’t go well.

Of course, when we relocated our pentaprism production facility from Japan to Vietnam, this also involved transferring our expertise and craftsmanship. It’s usually the case in situations such as this that Japanese engineers visit the overseas factory and go through a detailed, repeated verification process with the local staff. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, it was impossible for us to make this trip. In the end, we decided to set up a new facility in Japan where our engineering team could develop the technologies necessary to perfect the finishing process, the production step which demanded the largest amount of time. For instance, our engineers experimented with many different production methods and minute testing conditions, finding solutions through a trial-and-error approach in the end."

[my emphasis]

Incidentally, the physical characteristics of the prism suggest a plausible answer for the omission of GPS.

High-refraction glass is rigid and fragile > Need to protect it with a strong metal housing > Replace the conventional plastic prism cover with magnesium alloy > But the RF antennas would be shielded at the prism location > Move the antennas > Only have space for the wireless antennas > Could obtain location info from smartphone > Omit onboard GPS

Of course, there could be other reasons.

It's called longitudinal chromatic aberration. Many/most lenses don't correct for this perfectly, it's rather common if you have the right conditions of high contrast out of focus areas such as your example. It's less noticeable for regular photos i think simply because things kind of blend in.

I feel an explosion in megapixels coming now

The one benefit I see from the mega-megapixels trend is the ability to have heavy crops with significant detail.
24mp (Sony a7iii) is what I've settled on but I'm always curious about the 42mp offerings from the A7Riii, truthfully.

HippyHippo does have a good point - there are undoubtedly plenty who have gone for the 'bigger is better' approach only to have a 1024 pixel width photo uploaded to FaceNovels or the suchlike.
Even though that's largely an approach I take (Instagram, as mentioned), I like having the scope to have larger prints. Evidenced by my brother and sister-in-law's maternity photo which they had printed reasonably large and their baby photo which was also printed fairly large, twice (one for my parents).

The Iphone 12 is better than a DSLR

Big advantage of a bigger sensor is dynamic range and color fidelity. All the phone photos I've seen, and photos coming out of my smart phone, look over processed and acidic in color. It's a small sensor, not much you can do.

I also worked with raw files that my phone is able to produce, they're are more flexible than jpegs for sure, but the amount of noise in the shadows is crazy, even at iso 100.

Sure, it's better to have a camera in the pocket than not. But that's why I bought GRIII :) I only use my phone as a utility, like taking a photo of some document (instead of scanning).

Certainly not a popular opinion among many photographers, but the reality is that modern phones are in many ways better than a lot of dedicated cameras. The gap has unquestionably been narrowed. This also is why the compact camera segment has been eradicated and replaced by specialty cameras for action, outdoor, or 360 shooting.

DSLRs are specialized tools and will therefore provide additional "niche" features/performance that simply wouldn't make sense in a phone, and of course generally offer better handling and control. However, despite their advantages, even modern DSLRs do fall behind in certain areas, such as in-camera processing. Camera makers should pay close attention to this.

So it really depends on what you're trying to compare. A phone snapshot will probably look just as good (or better, in auto mode) as what comes out of a DSLR. But if you really need to push the equipment to its limits, it's a completely different story.

Another thing to keep in mind: given the rate at which technology evolves, you never know what breakthrough might give one type of camera, or the other, a boost.

The CCD Sensor Cult. I mean Club...

Not too many people shoot them anymore, as no one's making them at this point... but the CCD sensor cameras have a loyal following (some would say obsession) from its fans (crazy? luddites?).

If you love the images you get from your CCD sensor camera, be it a tiny point and shoot or a giant sensor 645D or even a full medium format back, post here and wax poetic about the virtues of a technology that was replaced by a lower cost, video-friendly alternative (CMOS)...

Here's my K200D and DA* 16-50mm at 50mm, and my son going out to meet with some waves.

And here's the same combination with a 2.5second exposure. The CCD sensor is great for capturing luminance in tricky conditions, I find... in a way that seems similar to slide film.

Sticky: An important message from the moderators
Posted By Adam

To the PF community:

I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy in these unprecedented times (please check out our statement on the coronavirus if you haven't already). Like many other businesses, the camera industry has also suffered in the past months (e.g., low camera sales figures and more recently, the sale of the Olympus camera division, etc.). Consequently, even though it would seem that Pentax is coping quite well in comparison, we've been observing a steady rise in negative sentiment toward the Pentax brand throughout the community, which in some cases has led to unpleasant confrontations in forum threads and difficult decisions by the moderators.

In line with my mission of Pentax Forums being a friendly and inclusive community for Pentax users, we are going to be taking a series of steps to help minimize these kinds of unpleasantries going forward.
  • We are seeking additional moderators across multiple time zones to ensure that fewer issues that require moderator attention slip through the cracks (please visit this thread if interested)

  • To the extent possible, we will take a proactive approach to help members avoid issues, rather than directly stepping in to act on problematic post/threads

  • We will provide a greater degree of transparency regarding moderator actions in cases where a member disagrees with a decision that was made, even if the decision itself is not reversed

  • We will gather additional feedback from the community: please feel free to share your ideas in this thread (the moderators will not comment on specific incidents however), or contact the moderators privately

  • Although constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged, we will continue to maintain a firm stance against any form of bullying, trolling, or personal attacks.

To the latter point, I'd like to reiterate this statement that the moderation team posted several months ago:

QuoteQuote:

In recent weeks and months we have received feedback - primarily from new members, but a few established ones too - regarding unnecessarily harsh, dismissive, rude and/or aggressive responses, especially (but not only) when someone raises concerns, doubts or criticisms of the Pentax brand.

PentaxForums is a brand-specific enthusiast site, and most of us here are Pentax enthusiasts. New members with critical views of the brand have a responsibility to understand the dynamics of the community they're participating in and consider the effect of their posts, and we've updated our Welcome & Forum Rules sticky post to reflect this, with guidelines for new members. Even so, all of our members - new and old - have a responsibility to respect each other's opinions (even when we disagree), remain courteous and friendly at all times, keep an open mind, and avoid jumping to conclusions, making personal comments or name-calling (terms such as "fanboy" or "troll", for example). We each represent these forums whenever we post, and it's incumbent on us to present our community as welcoming, respectful, tolerant and helpful to all.

We might reasonably hope that our most established members in particular would take this responsibility to heart, to ensure the continued popularity and longevity of our community and the brands we all support.

When faced with a post where you feel the only option is to dismiss it or "shoot it down", please consider the wider effects of your response. If rules have been broken, report the post to a moderator using the "yellow triangle" report post feature (not by PM, please) and avoid further involvement in the discussion until a moderating decision has been made. Otherwise, please be mindful of the standards referred to above when responding.

Most of all, please strive to be friendly and respectful at all times. There is never just one way to offer (or counter) an opinion. However ill-conceived or inflammatory a post may seem, responding in kind does nothing to help our community and its reputation.

The moderating team will not hesitate to take appropriate action against members who consistently impact the forum atmosphere in a negative way.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and - as always - many thanks for your valued contribution to the forums!

Is it possible that your manual focusing accuracy is partly to blame for the soft results you're getting? For auto-focus, have you carried out AF fine adjustment to ensure it's focusing accurately? Also, are you shooting with a filter of some sort attached to the lens?

The reason I ask is, I use the screw drive HD 55-300 WR, which is the same as yours optically save for the HD lens coatings, and I've been extremely pleased with the results (both resolution and rendering in general). Try not to shoot it at maximum aperture... Like most lenses, it needs to be stopped down a bit to give sharp results. You'll ideally want to select one stop down or more from wide open when shooting up to about 200mm, and best performance is reached at f/8 throughout this focal length range. Approaching 300mm, you'll need f/11 to get optimal results.

With the exception of efficiency, I beg to differ. I have done some gorgeous monochrome conversions from digital captures, but know that my film negatives have a ton more to work with, even scanned.* Unfortunately, demonstrating such would require having you at my workstation and light table and with requirements of social distancing, that ain't gonna happen. ;)

Steve

* I hesitated putting that last at about scanned film, but decided to leave it in. I can scan to 32-bit monochrome TIFF and the tonal reproduction is pretty incredible with little artifact generated in PP. Scans from color negatives, on the other hand, are often fairly "brittle" in PP.
