Thanks all. I was looking for an answer to the same question. I just broke out my P5 for a Mackinaw and Sault St. Marie trip. My son also has my MZ50 for the week to give film a try.

No the 2nd Christmas with my sister did not prove out the formatting of the card... It has been freezing repeatedly.

I formatted the new card and shot 6 pictures and a Panorama. So far no freezing. Tomorrow's Christmas #2 with my sister should be a good confirming test.

Just did... Froze again on the second shot... I am losing credibility with my wife on my selection of Cameras. She wanted a Fuji or Panasonic bridge camera. The price plus good ratings sold me on the X-5, but she thinks I picked it now because I was blinded by my love for my K-5.

Just bought my wife and X-5 for Christmas... It has frozen 6 times on write within the first 30 or so shots. We had to pull the batteries each time. It was using a new memory card, so I put in an older one that works fine in my K-5. The 3 shots with the new card were OK, and it froze again on write (4th shot). Then I shot about 6 more after pulling the batteries and it froze again.
It looks like I have a dud. Agree?

All the controls are working fine today. No water under any flaps or doors, the lens looks to be clear and dry along with the mirror house.

My problem now is that I want to go on a WR lens buying spree, and my wife may want to buy a purse of equal value for each lens I buy.

Now I have a problem. This evening I am looking at DA* and other WR lenses. I keep thinking, 'What if I had grabbed an old FA zoom instead for a day out with the family?'

I have been registered for some time but never did an intro. I am doing one now thanks to my K-5 surviving. We were having lunch and drinks today in Chicago, and my son knocked over my MIL's cherry lemonade foo-foo drink onto my K-5. Direct full on hit with a sugary sticky sweet drink to my camera and 18-55WR lens on the empty chair next to me. He yelled sorry dad it was an accident so loud that the waiter came running and everyone looked. I told the waiter and my son, don't worry I will just go rinse it under some warm water. The waiter went 'What?!' and said simply, 'It's a Pentax.' Went and rinsed it and came back to the table patting it dry. The waiter asked me how I could just go rinse of a DSLR and I of course explained a bit about the camera and lenses. Turns out he was an art institute student ...and now a possible convert. (BTW I have a bunch of film era lenses and I rarely use the 18-55WR. Today it called for rain and I did not want my bag with me at the Navy pier so I put on my only WR lens. No rain, though.)

There is no difference optically. There is a deep arcane technical difference on the way it talks to the camera; FA's can store or store more MTF data on the lens something kind of unique to Pentax I think. The benefit,in program modes the camera knows where the lens is sharpest and can use it to choose the f-stop vs (shutter speed and sensitivity).

It is such a nice lens that it would just about be worth owning two. This is the lens that is on my camera when it comes out of my bag and also when it goes back in.
