They claim it is a discontinued lens, which is odd, but it is a great price. Sold by Another Deal Site and fulfilled by Amazon, so not sure what that means regarding warranty.

Mine is AIV and has a slight wobble, but no effect on image quality. There was a very similar thread about 6 months ago, I would guess, and the responses were the same. Common problem unfortunately.

Same lens, similar problem for me. Precision has had my lens on 4 different occasions over the past 11 months and has not been able to fix the problem. One time, they even sent back the lens to me saying there was no issue with it. I find myself frustrated enough that I have been researching other systems lately. I emailed Joe voicing my frustration and hoping he can resolve the issue one way or another. Pentax has been a great system for me, so I hate to abandon it. I miss this lens though and don't really have a fast enough alternative in this range.

Glad it has been sorted out for you! Hopefully I will have a happy ending as well.

Yes, the camera focuses just fine with all of my other lenses in the exact same situation (scene and camera settings). I emailed Ricoh, who responded quickly previously, so we'll see what they say.

It seems that I cannot obtain far focus using either the viewfinder or live view. I can obtain far focus on other lenses just fine. My battery just died, so charging now and will play some more. Thanks Steve for the flow - I feel completely inadequate troubleshooting this as this is just a hobby of mine and clearly don't have the familiarity with the camera/lenses as most on this forum. Following your logic, this is a problem with the lens, which precision camera states is in working order. This has been in 3 times for repair of the same problem and the last time I contacted someone from Pentax directly who expedited everything for me. I honestly have some concern that this could be operator error at this point.

Correct Steve - I cannot find focus using the optical viewfinder. There are times when the camera doesn't even allow me to take the picture.

Won't focus manually or in either Auto mode. This picture was taken in AF.C. The camera won't focus on anything beyond about 30 feet with this lens mounted. Focus doesn't hunt, it just reaches infinity and stops. I am not at all technical, so not really sure how to better describe it. Precision Camera claims the lens is in perfect working order, but it doesn't do me much good if it doesn't focus past 30 feet.

The lens does not focus at infinity on my K-5. I have sent the lens in to precision camera three times and this last time they sent it back with a note basically saying the lens is fine. Anyone local to seacoast NH who would be willing to try the lens on their camera for me in exchange for a free coffee?? I have all these end of year events for the kids and would love to have this figured out. I am considering just buying a new camera, but all my other lenses are working fine on the trusty K-5.

I love this lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time, but I am about to throw the thing against a brick wall.

Background - I bought the lens in November of 2013 and in August of 2014 I started having problems focusing on anything past 30-35 feet. It is like the focus ring reaches the end, but needs to turn a bit more to focus (not hunting). Oddly - it wasn't happening 100% of the time. By October, it never focused at these distances (auto or manually by the way) so I sent it out to Precision Camera. I was very pleased, as the turn around was less than two weeks. I can't find the ticket at the moment, but pretty sure all they did was replace SDM motor (wondering if they just assumed this was the problem). However, by January it was doing the same thing. It worked here and there I think, but mostly did not work. I called Precision and they said to send it back for a "Redo." They received it late January and I just got it back this past Thursday. Over 3 months without the lens; a lens I was lost without at so many of my children's activities. This time they replaced the Flex Circuit B. Guess what... Still doesn't work!

I am planning on dealing with this sometime this week, but am hoping to get some advice on how to proceed. I would really rather not contact Precision again as I have no faith my issue will be corrected and I want a working copy of this lens immediately. Calling Ricoh directly tomorrow is where I am thinking I will start. Does anyone have experience with this problem? I did a search and found threads about focus issues at infinity - which seems to describe what I am dealing with, but Precision wasn't able to correct.

I am not a professional, nor am I technically savvy, so I am starting to wonder if I am part of the problem? I have never performed a firmware update on camera? Could that be an issue?

Any help would be really appreciated! At the very least, I want to be able to best describe my problem to Ricoh when I call them.

Thanks!

FA 31 vs new K3

First of all, I received the lens today and it is awesome. Very excited to play with it around the holidays and see if I can get some great shots.

When I had ordered the lens, I received an email confirmation showing the correct amount I had paid for the lens. Of course, I look at my credit card statement today and guess what…? Pentax hit my card for the full MSRP of the lens + shipping! Ha, nice try! They will be getting a call from me Monday morning. I doubt it will be difficult to straighten out, but certainly let this be a lesson to always check your credit card statement after a purchase!

I probably would consider this lens normally, but with the Pentax being cheaper during this sale makes it harder to pass on. HSM would be nice and I bet it probably focuses faster.

Sorry, I definitely left out some info… I just found a very similar post from this summer and was reading through the responses. Difference being that the other poster already had a big prime collection.

I have a K-5, the basic kit lens, the DA 55-300 and my baby, the DA* 50-135 (currently in for repair). I generally have the 50-135 lens on the camera unless I need something wider. I try to avoid needing something wider though just because I prefer to make my 50-135 work for every situation (I know, not possible).

Am I crazy to pass on the K3 right now and instead get the FA 31? This would be my first prime, so I figure go big or go home, right? I love my DA* 50-135 and it basically stays on my camera. The K3 has been on my mind a lot for the improved AF as well as the improved ISO performance. I don't really feel like spending the cash to buy both at this time, so one or the other. New camera or new lens?

Oh man! That is rough. I love the lens, but have steered clear of other SDM lenses for this exact reason. Bummer. Hopefully you get it fixed and will have many years of trouble free use!

I just dropped off my DA 50-135 at Precision on Wednesday (yes, during the snowstorm on my way to grandma's...). They said they should have it shipped back to me within 10-15 days. I thought that was a pretty quick turn around. Good luck! Definitely my favorite lens and hated to not have it. My problems were intermittent, but my warranty is up next week, so I figured I better have them check it out.

I may pick up one of these or something similar as I was looking for a sling strap as I hate my neck strap.

My plan was to find someone to give it to before I leave; probably just visit a camera shop and and give to a customer.
