High ISO Film Photos

Re: the A-1, I think the reason you saw 12800 on it was due to the fact that it allows +- 2 stops of EC, which is set by rotating the ISO dial. If the top film at the time was say 3200, then in order to provide that 2 stops of EC the dial's range would have to be able to go up to 12800, even though you'd never likely set that as a legitimate ISO normally. Just a guess. I never even noticed my A-1 went to 12800 because the highest I've used so far in it is 400. Learn something new every day.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax K5IIs (body only)

Asking Price
425.00 USD

Item Location
New Castle, PA (United States)

Item Description
Hi, I'm selling my Pentax K5IIs body, which I bought back in December, 2014. I say condition is Like New because it has about 2000 actuations on it, but otherwise it's clean as a whistle with all original accessories, documents, and box.

The reason I'm selling it is that I bought it to try out a Pentax DSLR body since I've had an interest in Pentax for a while. I have some Pentax manual focus film lenses that I thought would be interesting to shoot with on digital, but the results weren't what I was expecting and overall, while it's a very solid, well made camera, it's not a good fit for me and so I'm passing it on to others who'd appreciate it more.

My asking price is $425 USD, plus S&H.

Payment is via PayPal only, and I'm asking $18 for USPS Priority Mail shipping, insurance incld. I will only ship to the U.S., so kindly please don't ask otherwise. Since this is my first sale here, you can check my eBay feedback, which 100%; my username there is SirMy-TDog. Thanks for looking - I hope one of you can enjoy this fine camera soon!

I could care less about it. My first SLR was a Ricoh KR-5 Super and my second was a Ricoh XR-P. Both used a Pentax K mount for the lenses. In my eyes Ricoh has always had a close relationship with Pentax, so who better to have purchased them? I have both Ricoh and Pentax history, so it's all good.

Leather looks nice for sure, but not very good durability as it ages. I've almost lost two cameras due to leather strap failures, so after the second time I chucked all the other ones I had. Personal favorite strap for smaller cameras like the K5 is the old standard thin straps I saved from my Canon and Pentax SLRs back in the day. Simple, lightweight, and just works. For large cameras like my D3 I use Optech Pro straps which put up with the weight and help distribute it evenly over my shoulders and neck.

K-5 IIs inconsistent exposure

Sorry, but I can't tell you that because I never use that feature on the camera. Even if it does have an effect though, I don't believe it should produce severe results if that's what you're getting. In my case, the results were so off compared to other cameras I have and based on years of shooting experience that I had to conclude it was something up with the camera. All I can say is that if based on your own experience something doesn't feel right to you, then you should have them look at it. It didn't cost me anything because of the warranty, and they fixed something when it went in, so it was worth the time to send it out. Worst case - they send it back saying nothing's wrong which, at that point, you know it's likely something you're doing and not the camera.

In all honesty, you may want to send it in for service. I bought one a few weeks back and in bright, contrasty situations it would severly overexpose by at least a stop. Other situations as well, but not quite as bad. I've never had any other camera act this way, so I sent it in for service and when it came back it worked the way I expected it to. According to the invoice, they listed complete repair and return to factory specs. Whatever they did specifically I'm not sure, but the difference is noticeable.

Personally, after reading all this I would tell her no and be firm about it. If as you said, you paid for the bulk of your own gear with your money you earned yourself, and you enjoy your gear and feel it is what allows you to express yourself in the way that you like the best, then what she wants has no bearing on anything. If she wants to change for what she feels is a legitimate reason, then let her - with HER gear that she owns and only that.

Will she be mad? Maybe, but who cares. Why are you required to sacrifice your creative needs in order to promote hers? I've shot and gotten paid for quite some time. I use what I want to and, barring any legitimate technical concerns, if someone doesn't like how I work then I have no interest in working with them. It's OK to say no, and as pointed out in prior posts, you're probably doing yourself a favor as those kind of clients often end up being a PITA.

No one's going to tell me what gear I can use, how I'm allowed to be creative, or how to spend my own money, including my wife.

Leaving the camera switched on...

Pg. 54 of the K5II/s manual states, "Make sure the camera is turned off before inserting or removing the SD Memory Card." Pg. 56 states, "Turn the camera off before attaching or removing the lens to prevent unexpected lens movement." as well as Step 1 in the process being, "Make sure the camera is turned off." Pg. 59 states, "Always turn the camera off when not in use." Do people not follow this and get away without any harm, sure, but they put it in there for a reason and it doesn't get any clearer than that.

Does Pentax UI "look dated" to you? Think Ricoh should change it?

As someone new to Pentax who is also a longtime Nikon shooter with some Canon mixed in as well, I would say, yes, the menu system comes across as dated. As someone above mentioned, it really is fairly old school computer-y looking with a basic monotype font that is pretty characterless. It's not the end of the world or something that would put me off from buying the camera (K5IIs in my case), but it'd be nice if the menu looked like it had as much effort put into it as the actual physical build of the camera, which is excellent.

Regarding functionality, well, it is reasonably simple and easy to navigate, and I had no problems in setting up my camera, but it could use a bit of polishing. Case in point, the Custom Settings menu. First time I hit that tab I had a plethora of settings presented to me and with no direct indication of what option was chosen for each setting other than a number, which told me nothing unless I actually selected the setting and looked at what the options are. In contrast, Nikon's Custom Settings menu shows all the settings with a direct indicator/icon showing what option was selected for each setting. Thus, if I want to skim the settings to double-check something or make a change, I only have to scroll through the menu once to know what every setting is at. It's very efficient due to requiring minimum effort to gain maximum information and the rest of Nikon's menus are pretty much the same.

Talking about Nikon menus, since a few have mentioned them earlier, I think one of the big things that makes them a bit overwhelming for people is that they don't work off of tabs so much as they prefer scrolling. You only have a few global tabs like Shooting, Playback, General, etc. and then instead of sub tabs like Canon and Pentax, they just have one scrolling menu. If you don't realize that then it can be easy to miss a setting because you didn't see it because you didn't scroll down to it. They also can be a bit much because Nikon tends to allow a lot more customization on their bodies (mid-level and up particulalry so) than their competitors. Features like being able to fine tune the meter globally and apart from any EC adjustments add complexity and options to the menus that can be a bit overwhelming I think for first time users. Canon has far less of that flexibility, and Pentax seems right in between and leaning more to being very Nikon like. So better, or worse? YMMV, but experience definitely is a factor. I've been shooting Nikon primarily for over 6 years and I don't even think about the menus at this point. Prior to the K5 I also picked up a D7100 and I've yet to read the manual. I turned it on, made a quick run through the menus to set it up, and been shooting with it ever since. Works just like my D3 for the most part, so I already knew what the menus meant.

And I'm not saying Nikon is perfect, no, but I think sometimes when people complain about menus and things on other mfg's goods, they tend to overly discount unfamiliarity and equate it with being poor design when in fact it's just new to them adn requires some time and effort. I mean, Pentax feels odd to me in a number of ways compared to my Nikons, but I don't think it sucks or anything, I just have to learn it and become familiar. I like the K5IIs a lot so far and was happy to get it at such a deal. If it pans out like I think it will, it'll end up being the perfect compact second system for me, which is why I had my eye on it for so long up to now.
