thanks
an honest answer...
it's just that I would have thought
go medium format with one or two lenses
and stay with the APS-C for journal work

Back in my Minolta XD-11 days
I borrowed my father-law's Hasselblad
- I wanted One -

Setting the cat amongst the pigeons!

What's the big deal with full frame...
when "back in the day"
we all shot full frame and
printed 8 x 10?

When "back in the day"
zoom lenses were mostly crap...
we now have some superb super-wide and out zooms
we crop in camera when shooting!

The APS-C format has matured to become a great standard!
Everything about it is accessible...full frame will be bloody expensive!

Anybody?

I found this thread. I too am looking for a book with more information than the manual.
Checked out Yvon's web site and got turned off by the lack of security.
I don't enter extensive personal information unless it's an https site.
Can anyone shed any light on my concerns?

Interesting, one of the more-perfect lenses married to one of the more-perfect bodies works!
I wonder if it would not work even better if you could enable screw-drive!
THAT IS ONE OF MY BEEFS WITH PENTAX!
Perhaps the only one...

The K-3 has been a move in the right direction without going Canonian or Nikonian.
I like that .

I quit film when it just got too expensive developing film.
My gear was all Minolta XD-11 and Tamron SP Glass.
Many grands of gear, I still have it.

After 10 years went looking. Found Pentax and the K-5. Heaven...?

Since I was a master of the "crop"
the full frame Pentax isn't that much of a draw.
It's really all about your choice of the "glass" and the "film".
OH...we don't use film!

Cheers...Pentaxians...
I am now one.

PS: and your POV

I'm new to the K-3. I've had the K-5 from the day it came out. I have only one lens that is dedicated lens motor - the DA* 55mm. All the others are either screw drive or both. The ones that are both I wish I could set to use the screw drive rather than the lens motor. The noise of a screw drive is way over stated. And I find it's always more accurate.
So - to the original poster - get the Tamron. Somehow I believe the lens motors introduce some kind of delay and over or under shoot focus - at least far more often than the screw drive.

Battery life

Hi
I've had my K-3 for about 6 weeks. I haven't done any serious photography, just around the house testing. Low light, flash response, both internal and a Metz external. What has me mystified is the battery life and how the camera performs. Fully changed the camera appears to be living up to my expectations. But as the battery drains functions seem to go haywire. Focus drift - both BF and FF. Inconsistent exposure. It's almost as if there is a "cliff" in the drain curve, that once hit, the camera gives up. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. It can vary with the lens I happen to be using or shooting mode. But once hit, it doesn't matter. Change the battery - with a newly charged one. I have some after market batteries that are even worse.

Would this be the way of the future for all our high-tech devices? The battery tech can't keep up?

K-3 Upgrade: K-5 Owner Looking For Advice

Hi, fellow geezer. Yes, I still have the K-5. In my film days, Minolta XD-11, I always had two bodies. Today, with sophisticated point-and-shoot, that's not really needed. My wife carries a nice PnS Nikon. I just might give the K-5 to my son for his astro telescope. He bought a Pentax K adapter for my camera. Now he can keep the camera.

Hey dude...I said the FF/FX crowd should keep it to themselves.
Your response has suffered serious deprecation since you posted.
The K-S? is a colourful consumer grade camera.
I was looking for a K-5 upgrade.
I have found it in the K-3. I now have to learn all the nuances.

I got mine from Amazon.ca.
If the Loonie hadn't taken such a drop I could have done even better.
The vagaries of FX. Hey Nikon - that's not a camera format

Thanks to all who posted. I now have a K-3. Hm...the menu system is going to be a bit of a learning curve.
There was one very pleasant surprise. It's lack of mention in these forums suggests the average age on here. The surprise was the view finder diopter adjustment. It's now a small dial to the side of the eye piece. The K-5 is a slide behind the rubber cup. It may seem trivial but to these old eyes, with bad and good days, this is a major advancement in ergonomics. You see, I'm 68!

Some of what you describe I've had happen with my K-5. Damned lazy fingers.
Interesting about the higher ISO's. I like that. Thanks.
Menu sequencing always change model to model. Like MS Windows.

Thanks for the detailed analysis. Very helpful. I am convinced. Just need to find tthe money?
To the few on here that suggested waiting for the FF, it will probably cost an arm and a leg first time out
And then will all lenses work equally well. FF adopters are bound to be disappointed.

Hi
I'm an infrequent visitor. None the less, I would appreciate any feedback.
I own a K-5, old model, which has served me well. I have a mix of lenses. Most Pentax. Limited or Star.
I'm considering upgrading to the K-3.
The two main reasons are the increased resolution and the anti-alias option.
Are there any reasons I should stay with my K-5?
Are there any surprises that might piss me off sufficiently to regret my decision?
I've read the reviews and the various discussion threads - all more or less good.
My lenses -
14mm, the three amigos, 55mm, 100mm macro, 50-135mm, 300mm
and the Sigma 17-50 EX 2.8 (so shoot me)
PS: I also have the standard kit lens - I call it my party lens - if it breaks - stuff happens.
SO
Pentaxians - do I bite the bullet - you FX dudes, keep it to yourself!
thanks in advance
Michael

Only for those that don't have any version of the K-5.
Whilst that package is definitely not "junk" the K-3 has obsoleted any K-5.
The way of technology...with perhaps some lenses being the exception.
But then look at what's happened to the "Limited"s.

That boulder looks like it's about to come down anytime.
If that's desert, why the atmospheric haze.

Another plus for the K-3.
When the K-5ii and K-5iis came out it didn't really seem worth the upgrade.
If you already had the K-5...wait...perhaps the wait is over.
I'm not interested in an FF body...and have to buy new lenses.
The APS-C is fine with me.
After all...it's simply a fun hobby...it aint paying the mortgage.
If it is paying the mortgage, buy a medium format.

I really haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
The autofocus seems to "snap" into focus...no hunting.
Not like my 50-135.
Between the two, the 300 is faster.

I have a K-5.
Depending on the user reviews, a K-3 is on my wish list.
Considering my age, you might say it's on my "bucket list".;)

Doubt it.
Even the BF/CB discounts weren't mind blowing.
Not like last year.
Anything left with a serious discount is entering the realm of "obsolete junk".

Just wanted to post a shout-out to those that took the time
to advise me on my dilemma - a DA* 200 or a DA* 300.

I went for the DA* 300.
WOW...what a lens.
I've only snapped a few shots in the bowels of my home office.
(major business commitments keeping me busy)
Hand held, internal flash and the images are sharp.
Can't wait to get down to some serious shooting.

Hi Guys:)

The DA* 300mm is in transit.
Only 300 off.
Last year it was 500 or 550.
I think those days are long gone.
Everyone has to make a buck and score when you can.

Since I now have a Kenko 1.5 TC that is SDM compatible
the 50-135 and the 300 extend my reach
and the TC fills in the holes: 70-200/500 (close enough).

I have only one more thing to complete my kit.
A second body (K-3).

Not sure I can wait a year.
Time will tell.

(if pentax comes out with their own tc i have a fiscal problem)

I'm thinking the same thing.
My Kenko TC works quite nicely on the 50-135.
Will sleep on it. I have some time.
300 off is still 300 saved.
(ironic...300 off on a 300 mil)

I would suggest - don't worry about it.

You don't lose it But metering can be compromised some what.
Simply learn how much and adjust according to the lens you are using.
Fast lenses don't have problem.

If the K-3 meters after focus there really should never be a problem.
I would have thought metering should always happen after focus.
Otherwise the meter doesn't know what light it is seeing.

Again...
It's a matter of learning the advantages and deficiencies of your gear.
Then working within these boundaries.

This will never change.
