Thanks...……… I heard there are 2 lookouts to get a photo of wineglass bay from on the side of the mountain (90mins return) or from the top of Mt Amos (3 Hrs return but very steep). Might do the easy one first & depending on the weather do the Mt Amos one the next day.

Hi,
Newbie question, looking for advice.
Just bought my first CPL (Breakthrough X4) for my holiday to Freycinet in 2 weeks.
I am planning on using it with my Pentax K-70 & DA 18-135 DA 55-300 lenses. (with a 58-62mm step up adaptor)
The Breakthrough Website says I need to change my camera settings to allow for loss of 1 stop of light.
My question is how/what settings do I change (I am guessing I change the F Stop but wont the camera just change the other settings) ?
Cheers,
Arthur

Thanks everyone for the feedback...…. I bought the 1.4 converter because I couldn't afford a bigger zoom. Having looked at your advice & the Lens review page I am thinking of buying the Samyang 35mm F1.4

Seems this lens is out of stock (I have tried several vendors) but I have been offered other alternatives............. Just wondering if these are better/worse but I was really liking the WR feature of the pentax lens (FYI I have a K10D)

Ok so finally took the camera into Pentax Repair as no matter how much I cleaned contacts etc. the fault (normal shot/ dark shot @ same settings) would come back soon after (real annoying).
They told me it was the Aperture Control Arm Block that the fault was the arm was sticking and therefore would not always open the lens aperture between shots.
Repair quoted @ $118 and I will hopefully get it back this week sometime.

Ok thanks......... I guess it was more about having a backup copy away from my camera card. Not sure the iCloud or Photobucket will work as well for me as I will be doing a lot of travel on trains and the internet cost would outweigh buying a few spare memory cards. I will probably follow oerlies (Russ) suggestion & just buy some extra memory cards and use my Ipad to view the days photos to upload a few for family & friends during my journey.
Cheers,
Arthur

Thinking of travelling light this year (Europe) & rather than take my laptop wondered if many people just use their Ipad ??
I bought a camera Connection Kit which is good for downloads but if I shoot RAW it will use up the Ipad Storage preety quick.
Any tips/pointers from those that just use their Ipad with their DSLR ??

Good news is I received my Pentax DA 10-17 Fisheye Lens today :-)
Here are some photos of my Indian Ringneck Bird I took with it (lens was so close he was trying to eat it !!!!)
I can also see what you mean about keeping your feet out of shot (amazing) |

Yep.....it was me (in this same thread).
It was your advice that convinced me to get the DA10-17 Fisheye as I would get full sky & sharper shots.
Now time to practice with it before December. Keen to try all the advice folk have given me in this thread.
Cheers,
Arhtur

I don't think brightness will help me at all: I will be in the Arctic Circle in December taking photos at night of the northern lights (i think they only get 2 hours daylight per day while I am there)

Thanks Marc.................. Yes I ended up buying the Pentax DA 10-17.
It goes against my original bias because it is slower @ F3.5 & it's a Fisheye, but thanks to all the advice given here I have understood there are other advantages with this lens.
When the lens arrives I will do some practice, including ISO, bracketing, etc. to get the most out of it (ISO 800 with a Pentax K10D is probably ok but doubt it will do the 1600 without a lot of noise)
Cheers,
Arthur

Thanks for the advice..............I plan to do a lot of research & practice beforehand to get the most out of the trip. Those simulations will help greatly also. I like the idea of the "Bracketing" feature you mention so will definitely look into that. I have another lens from my old Ricoh XR6 35mm Camera that I might try also with the Fisheye Adaptor. It has a really wide aperature with an F Stop of 2 but is long @ 50mm Ricoh XR Rikenon 50mm f/2.0 Lens Reviews - Ricoh Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Wow
I have only had my Digital SLR 3 months now and can hardly understand what all this means. :(
I am very happy to learn as I will only get one shot at this so very keen to get it right.
If I don't understand it correctly please let me know as I am still learning.
I appreciate your detailed response and if I follow the logic it sounds like you are recommending a 10mm F3.5 Fisheye or the DA10-17 because of both the AOV & the amount of light it collects will reduce the time required for exposure (whereas I have been focussing purely on the F Stop).
I may be way off track here:o but It appears I need to somehow multiply the F Stop effect & the AOV to get time for exposure?
It also sounds like I may be wrong about the Fisheye lens as the AOV of these may also help me get a better shot.
I really like your "Cut To The Chase" comment............. So here goes.
Which one would you choose if you were going to the Arctic Circle with a Pentax K10D and wanted a wide angle lens to take a photo of the Northern Lights ???
I am really grateful for the responses.:D
P.S. What does "Slightly FE" "Very FE" Mean.

Thanks Joe.......... I can see what you mean.
It's just the F Stop will kill the clarity of the shot as the Northern Lights are moving. (At F3.5 Patrick is saying the exposure = 50 seconds @ ISO 400)
I am positive now that I need something at least F2.8

I will be there in December so even though I am shooting outside, it will be very dark (only about 2 hrs daylight and between New Moon & 1st Qtr) I will have my tripod & use the remote shutter which will help but the shutter will be open for a loooonng Time.........
Here is an extract from Patrick's excellent article on exposure required: Approximate exposure times in relation to f/stop @ 400ISO – varies based on ambient light. Camera Lens F-stop Time
Canon EF 24mm L f/1.4 7.5 seconds
Canon EF 35mm L f/2.0 15 seconds
Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 30 seconds
Canon EF 16-35mm Lf/2.8 30 seconds
Canon EF 10-22mm f/3.5 50 seconds

Thanks for the reply............. There is a Samyang 14mm F2.8 (link above) but I agree. If F3.5 was ok this Sigma lens looks very good.
I think the diffference with the F Stop is the amount of time required for the exposure. The higher the F Stop means the longer the shutter needs to stay open and as the northern lights are moving, the shot will not be as clear. Another way around it I suppose is going to a higher ISO (& Noise Reduction) so I might be limited with the Pentax K10D (800 is probably Ok but I think it would struggle with noise @ 1600 Max ISO)
