Item for Sale
K200d body with D-BG3 grip and remote

Asking Price
$ 250.00

Item Location
Rochester, NY

Item Description
Pentax K200d camera body along with the D-BG3 battery grip, the Pentax remote control, and a couple sets of rechargeable AA batteries. I'm clearing the closet for some new goodies. Been shooting with this camera for about 2 years now, but I have always taken very good care of it, it's in great shape. Fully operational, no mechanical or electronic problems. This certainly isn't the "latest and greatest" but it's taken tons of great photos for me and would be perfect for a second or backup body, or maybe for a kid or someone just getting into SLR photography. I will entertain reasonable offers depending on the response I get, I know there isn't a huge demand but this is a nice body and I hope that someone can make use of it. Shutter count is about 3,800. I have the USB and A/V cables, but I do not have the box. Can't find the manual, still looking for it (but it can be downloaded from Pentax website).

Pentax DA* 50-135 2.8 SDM

Asking Price
now $ 725 includes shipping

Item Location
Rochester, NY

Item Description
Pentax DA* 50-135 f/2.8 lens. Includes original box, lens hood, soft fabric pouch, instructions. Both caps, but I just noticed that the rear cap is a Tamron cap not a Pentax cap, must have switched them. Front cap is the original Pentax cap. I've always treated this well, excellent condition all around, glass, outer surfaces, etc. A few months ago, this lens had an SDM motor failure. Sent back to Pentax in Arizona for factory repair. So, although the lens itself is about 2 years old, you are getting a brand new SDM motor, and a recent cleaning/checkup/test/adjustment from Pentax Service. I've used it for a couple weeks since it came back and everything seems fine. Focus is good and always has been on my K200d (before and after the repair).

Item for Sale
WEIRD - Zenitar 16mm Fisheye, and Portragon

Asking Price
100.00

Item Location
Rochester NY

Item Description
Two strange lenses:
The Zenitar 16mm f2.8 is a Russian made, manual focus, manual aperture, fisheye lens. You can read about this lens in various places around the net. There is a UV filter at the back of this one, but I do not have the other little filters that come with some of the Zenitars. The front hood of this lens is loose, however that does not seem to affect the front element which is still secure. The photographic results from this lens are variable, do not purchase this if you are looking for ultimate quality. It is an oddball good for experimentation.

Along with this, I have some sort of soft-focus portrait lens. It is marked as follows "Portragon 1:4 100mm Japan". It is a fixed aperture, manual focus lens. I believe this was made by Spiratone, and if you Google it you can find some sample images. I have had this on and off my K200d and it fits and functions and does not jam or get stuck. Same as the lens above, don't buy this for quality photos, buy it to experiment with as an oddity.

Won't split them up, with the price so low you need to take both of them !

Pentax A 50mm 1.7 plus Teleconverter

Asking Price
$ 80

Item Location
Rochester, NY

Item Description
SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.7 lens. serial 1385109. Purchased via this forum a couple years back, just don't use it that much. Glass and external surfaces in good clean condition. Have both original caps front and back. Aperture works smoothly. Just for the heck of it, I am also throwing in a Soligor type MP teleconverter, 2X, marked "to fit Pentax-K". I cannot say much about this, I inherited it and never used it, never had it on a camera. So, I can vouch for the lens, but not the converter. The converter does look new, and does come in a very nice little vinyl pouch.

Tamron extends warranty coverage only to the original purchaser of the lens, unfortunately. I had one other buyer check into this, and if you look on their website, you'll see it in the fine print.

Item Description
Tamron lens, 17-50 mm f 2.8, XR-LD DiII version. Pentax mount. This is NOT the VC (vibration compensation) version, which is actually good as this version gets better reviews for quality and sharpness. I have had this lens for about 18 months, it's seen a fair amount of use but has always been well cared for and has taken many great shots. Glass is clean, everything works nice and smooth. Autofocus function has always been good, no back or front focus issues that I have seen . Selling some existing toys so that I can buy some new ones :) You will get the lens in the original box and with the original packing material. I ship via UPS and get you a tracking number as soon as it is on the way.

K200 will not autofocus

Thanks Marc, all of those are good ideas also. When it happens, there is nothing in the frame that is in focus. The green hexagon doesn't come on. The camera shoots as if it were in manual focus mode. I have it set to automatically pick the focus point, which is how I have always used it. The other thing I have noticed is that sometimes it will start to constantly run the focus as I move the camera around, as if it were in AF-C mode, even though I can verify that it is not. All in all, completely strange behavior and I'm afraid I'll be sending the body in for service.

Good thought, I have checked and I am in AF-S mode. I toggled it back and forth a couple times to be sure. When it doesn't focus, it doesn't focus at all, doesn't even try, so it's not like it is shooting too early, it's just not trying to focus at all.

Anyone ever seen this before? K200D, in use with 2 lenses, a Tamron 17-50 (screw drive) and a Pentax 50-135 (SDM).

With both lenses, the body will randomly decide it doesn't want to autofocus, and just take an out of focus photo. It will do this several times, sometimes it decides to start focusing again, sometimes I have to cycle it on and off. I've verified and cycled the Af/MF button on the body, and on the lens (the SDM one).

Lens and body contacts all look fine and have been cleaned. Nothing was dropped, got wet, etc. Verified that I had good batteries (tried a couple different sets). Tried activating the reset function in the menus, and even tried a different SD card just in case something was weird there. Everything else appears to be working normally.

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them, otherwise I guess I need to send the body to Pentax. I think it's just barely out of warranty :-(

Thanks

C41 Black & White

The chromogenic films (B+W developed in color chemicals) always end up with a color cast when printed on color paper. It takes a lot of effort to color correct the images to get the prints to look truly black and white. It can be done, but the personnel and the highly automated (dummy-proof) machines at the local drugstore probably aren't going to get you that result.

And yes this is normal and your negatives are fine. It's in the way that the machine reads them when it makes the prints. The machine is completely set up for color printing, and has no idea that the prints from these negatives should actually be B+W.

Developing B/W film with C-41

There are only certain types of B+W films that are designed to be processed through the C41 color chemicals. Don't put normal B+W films through a C41 process, the C41 runs at a higher temperature, and will soften and possibly remove the gelatin emulsion from the film base. It will also bleach out all the silver, so if the emulsion does hang on, you won't get any image.

If you can find chromogenic B+W film, which will be marked on the cannister as specifically for C41 processsing, then go for it. It's a completely different type of film, the image in this type of film are formed by dyes, not silver.

(I used to be in the photofinishing business.... in the old days LOL)

Pentax K100D with the kit 18-55 lens for sale Been a great camera, time for me to upgrade to a new toy (K200 or K20 I haven't decided yet). Have the various cables, caps, booklets, etc. Reasonable offers considered, would make a nice second body or for someone just starting, etc. Paypal, money order, or a check (need to wait until it clears before shipping) are fine.

That's not a screw mount, but maybe not a Pentax mount either (Nikon?) Are there any letters or numbers around the mount itself, like maybe N (Nikon) C (Canon) or M (Minolta)? Maybe take it to a local camera store and comapre with what they have to identify the mount.

Greetings, Introduction, and a wide prime question
Posted By BruceNY
Replies: 0

Greetings:

I have been lurking in the forums for months now, learning a lot and enjoying it all. This is a great community with a lot of talented folks. On the technical side I have picked up a lot of good tips and enjoyed reading all the opinions, and on the photographic side I've seen some great images posted here.

Long time on and off photo enthusiast here, in high school and college I was full into it, photo editor of the paper, lots of 35mm equipment, darkroom work in B+W and color, etc. Once out of college I went into photofinishing, and you know how that goes, once you make your hobby your business it stops being fun. After many years of working on other people's photos I got out of that, and back into actually taking pictures. Although I know film inside and out, I haven't touched it in years, all digital now. After lots of fun with various point and shoots I went DSLR about a year ago with a K100D and have been having a great time with it ever since.

I'm currently working on expanding my lens options beyond the kit lens. I'll never get to the bag full of them I had with my 35mm gear, but I want some choices. I just ordered the Zenitar fisheye off of ebay for fun, haven't received that yet. I have decided that my first "serious" lens needs to be a wide angle prime. I need some help with that decision, and I know there's lots of folks here who won't hesitate to buy vicariously through me and give me their opinions :-))

Stuff I tend to shoot:
Street pics, people (candids mostly), places, things, pets.... low light, available light, night shots, hand-held, abstract stuff, stuff that I'm close to

Stuff I don't tend to shoot:
Sweeping landscapes and vistas, wild animals, stuff that's far away, on a tripod, in the studio

I've decided that I want something on the wide end, and since normal on the DSLR is around 30-35 that means I want to be down around 20mm. I'm looking seriously at the DA 21 pancake, and also the Sigma 20 1.8. They seem to be very different lenses and I'm having trouble making up my mind, especially since they are pretty close in price. Here's what I see:

Da 21 pancake
Pros:
Size (I really like the form factor of the pancake)
It's a Pentax, and a Limited

Cons:
3.2 max aperture
Some mixed reviews about image quality, some of which I see when looking at pics on pbase and flikr

Sigma 20
Pros:
Much larger max aperture
Seems to get better overall reviews for image quality, pics do look better to me on pbase and flickr (overall sharpness, contrast, etc)

Cons:
Physical size and weight

Need some feedback from folks who may have one or both of these lenses. Am I being overly sensitive to the IQ comments about the 21 pancake? I love the size and weight of the pancake, and I admit I like it's novelty value also. Because I like to shoot available light, I'm really attracted to the wide aperture on the Sigma, and wondering if it's IQ is really that much better (?)

And before anyone goes there, sadly I can't afford both right now ! Future additions I'm thinking about include the 40 pancake (which seems to getter better marks for IQ than the 21), the 50mm 1.4, and perhaps the DA 18-250 zoom for the far stuff (this zoom and one of the pancakes would be great for traveling I think).

Thanks and a very Happy New Year to everyone on this wonderful forum

Bruce
