DA15 AF broken

From the two pictures it is clear that the gap between fixed and moving barrel is two wide, to the point that you see the scale numbers through. It should be less than 1 mm. Maybe it fell or something?

I bet something went loose inside. It happened to me on the same DA15, one screw fell off inside, and it did not rotate smoothly anymore via AF or also manually. I fixed it myself by disassembling, etc.

I have news. I returned the K3 back again after 24 hours. The in-camera flash did not work. When opening the flash lid, the camera just would not take pictures. During repair they replaced the flash circuit, so maybe this is related. The guys of www.photo-univers.fr this time answered nicely "send us the camera and we will change it". So now I am waiting for a new K3, hopefully.

Just for your general amusement, let me share more news on my broken K3 saga.

The camera was sent back again on 16th May, on the understanding I would get a new one. I got this answer today (27th May):

"exactly, your K3 not work correctly. We have to send it to PENTAX for repair and i’am sorry but i done a mistake because we can’t change it, i thought your order was recent but not, the product is not new and i can’t change it by another product. We send your K3 to Pentax and we indicate to do fast repair."

To which I answered:

"Well this is very dissapointing. The K3 "not new" is a camera that I bought in 14th January 2014 and stopped working on 1st March 2014. When does the camera become "not new"? As far as I am concerned the camera is "very new". Today, 27th May, I am still without the camera. What I would like is to have a new camera replaced, or otherwise I would like to return the camera and have my money back. Is that possible please? Can you check with Pentax or Ricoh if this can be done? I cannot think of Cannon, or Nikon or Fuji treating customers like this."

I think that it is only a camera, so why get upset? But next camera I will buy, in choosing the brand, I will surely check very carefully what post-delivery support is provided and its reputation in my area of the world, because it can be much more important than any supposedly technical or handling advantage.

Finally I received the K3 fixed. It had failed after a Mirror Flapping Lockup and did not power on again.

I sent it for warranty repair on 3rd March, from Italy to France. Returned today 15th May. It really has been too long.

See attached the repair report. It seems they replaced several parts: main circuit, flash circuit and "deffective assembly", whatever it means.

I surely would have been a happier custumer by getting a full camera replacement instead, in much shorter time. But the camera is back, and that is good. No mirror flapping seen so far.

hi peterh337, that is impressive. I am too electronics engineer by education, and can follow, to a certain point, your reasoning. Very interesting story of the Nokia case.

The Pentax guys are clever, no doubt. If they have not implemented a firmware fix yet, is because there are likely unacceptable side effects, or simply because it doesn't fix the problem due to reason X that we don't know.

One of the big praises of the K3 is that it is much faster than the K5 (faster processor, screen, GUI, etc). This has a cost in power, and surely we see that battery life is shorter than K5's (24% reduction according to IR review). Maybe they have gone too far, up to a point that processor crash (as you rightly suggest) is likely with a weak or almost-depleted battery. Processor crash explains not only the mirror flap, but also the camera lock, requiring remove/reinsert the battery to recover.

Now, if the K3 power system is flawed or underdesigned, what to do? A major call-back action? A firmware fix to limit camera performace? Not easy.

Another idea: does the problem occur when powering the K3 via the DC port? If the above is true, it should not. You could do time-lapse reliably then.

This is only guessing of course, but better than Pentax silence.

I could be wrong, surely. For example, why is the problem happening also with the battery grip? There should be plenty of power in that case.

thanks peterh337, interesting analysis.

I think I am the only victim that suffered a total K3 failure after the mirror flap event. I remember vividly that the battery was very low, with only one tick in the K3 LCD battery monitor.

This is consistenty with peterh337 hypothesis, hinting that one should avoid getting close to the battery threshold.

By the way, I sent the K3 for repair on 5th March and I am still waiting (8th May today!). They tell me (www.photo-univers.fr) it will be shipped back next week.

I had the problem on 3rd March 2014, and I reported it in another thread (K3 died on me).
In my case the fault became destructive, the K3 had probably a power fault and did not wake up again.

I got it via Amazon from a Pentax shop in France (I live in Italy). I shipped the camera back to them, under warranty. Since then I am still waiting (40 days). They tell me, very politely, that the camera was sent to Pentax and as soon as they have news, etc, etc. But there are no news whatsoever. A month has passed and still they report they have no news from Pentax. Anybody got a similar experience?

If I would be Pentax, I would send a new camera right away to the ailing customer, without wait for repair. Otherwise, customers fall out love with the brand.

Taken at sunset, with sun hitting directly the flowers. The dark blue in the background is the blue sky, which appears much darker probably because of low exposure chosen by the K5. Minimal sharpening in PP

Shutter Flutter Panic using BG-5 Battery Grip On Low Battery

It happened to me, with disastrous consequence, the camera does not power on anymore. I am returning the it back for warranty repair.
I confirm I do not have the grip, and never mounted one on my K3.

Despite this bad experience, I can't wait to get the K3 back. I love the camera.
I am now on my old K5, and it feels like a big regression. Slower, smaller screen and less robust construction. Probablly I am being unloyal to the K5, after 2 years of heavy duty use, but the K3 feels so much solid.

Thanks, but I checked that already. It was machine-gunning even when the menu was set clearly in single-frame shooting.
Now I can't verify even that because the camera does not power on.

K3 died on me

well , not so good news. My K3 is dead, it does not start anymore. I have tried with two different fully loaded batteries, but no avail.

The last thing I did was just taking pictures, when all of a sudden when pressing the shutter it started machine-gun shooting at max speed. I switched off and it stopped after a while. I tried again and same thing, machine gun. Up to three times. Then it just did not start anymore. I remember battery level was very low but still operational.

I have firmware 1.02 installed right after it was published, and all worked fine until today.

Fortunately I am covered by warranty... Any similar experiences?

I just had the same problem. Could not actuate the shutter, and the message "battery depleted".

After looking at this thread I opened the SD card door, extracted the card, put it back again, closed the door, and problem fixed.

Can you identify this lens?

Yes, I mean the physical textured ring on the outside of the lens barrel.

For Manual Focus I like that the ring shows some resistance when turned, and I don't see this in this lens.

Maybe I got a bad copy. I bought it second hand.

I have it, but not in APO version.

Is crap. I have been unable to make photo in focus. The focusing ring is extremely loose. So I never use it.

Dirty Sensor

Hi , I will really appreciate help here.

The two pictures attached were taken with my K-5 + D FA MACRO 100mm WR. Same subject, ane picture at F2.8, the other at F32, that is, both ends of the lens.

The F32 shows many black dots indicating likely a dirty sensor. It must be the sensor because I get the same dots with any of my lens (18-135 WR, DA 40 limited, 55-300, A-2.8 135mm, D FA100mm).

The camera was recently sent to professional cleaning, I got it back just 3 weeks ago and I have noticed the dirt just recently.

The Dust Alert function does not detect any dust. I used repeatedly the dust blower to try removing any dust, but no success.

Should I send it back to cleaning (is actually a pain)? Why is the dust alert so ineffective? Has anybody noticed a similar behavior?

Thanks a lot for any answers
Felipe
