There really aren't any more buttons on the K-1 than on the Nikon D500 that he was gushing over in another video review. Kai is a fool and apparently quite pleased with himself for it.

The third command dial will be great though. That addition I very much like. Having immediate control over all three exposure parameters is fantastic.

Pentax K-1 (tentative) exhibited in Salon de la Photo from Paris

For me, longing for a de-crippled K mount has nothing to do with legacy glass. It's about having immediate control of each of the exposure settings at your fingertips. I want that functionality for the FA Limiteds. You know, those beautiful little lenses with auto-focus and auto-exposure that Pentax continues to produce today with that funky thingamajig called an aperture ring. And even though that thingamajig was designed way back in the olden times, it turns out it's a great way to conveniently control exposure since your thumb and middle finger naturally cradle the lens right there anyway. How this basic feature for controlling exposure ever came to be considered antiquated is beyond me. I believe it to be just as beneficial as it ever was.

One of the revolutionary new features digital offered was on-the-fly changes to ISO. With this advancement came the possibility of having every one of the exposure parameters at the ready. You'd now be able to instantly control shutter speed and ISO from the e-dials while setting aperture from, of all places, the aperture ring. There's a problem though... That's not possible with a crippled mount.

If only there were a way for the camera body to know what f-stop the lens was set at. Wait, there is! Unfortunately, Pentax has thus far chosen not to implement such a solution. And while the green button is great, it's still fiddly compared to simply being able to twist the aperture ring.

I'm not that old and I'm not that old school but I still want a de-crippled K mount, goddammit! And it's not so I can skip on buying expensive new glass. I would love to see new lenses with aperture rings! I find shooting in manual mode to be the most engaging and gratifying way to do photography. M mode isn't just for manual lenses, folks! I'd manual focus more if my eyes were better but I'd shoot in M all the time if I could just use the aperture ring on my FA Limiteds with normal metering.

I'm going to be disappointed if the FA Limited re-issues don't sport an aperture ring. The omission or inclusion of an aperture ring on any new FA Limited may end up being the clearest indicator of Pentax's intentions for resurrecting, or perhaps reinventing, the step-down coupler.

Looks awesome! I'm really pleased to see all the manual and custom controls. Placement of things seems alright and I expect the functionality added by the new knobs and buttons will help make for a smooth shooting experience. The style is very much in keeping with higher end Pentax DSLRs, which I'm also happy to see.

Top 3 DFA Primes Wishlist

Not speculating... Wishing.

New DFA primes have got to be at some stage of development. I'm daydreaming about new Limiteds and Stars. And I'm sure I'm not the only one!

My Top 3 (in order):

1. DFA Limited 43mm F1.4 WR
Haven't bought the current version but if I'm to get the new FF I will immediately need a field of view equivalent for the 31 I love and use so much.

2. DFA Limited 21mm F2 WR
Sharp, wide, and fast! Please!

3. DFA Limited 135 F1.8 WR
Compact tele with creamy bokeh. Roughly fill the spot of the sweet 77.

I'd be keenly interested in a DFA* 200mm F2.8 AW as well but I would shoot with the DFA Limited WRs above a lot more. I'm counting on them all being laden with the same enchanting pixie dust of their FA Limited brethren. Not too particular about the maximum aperture but I'm really hoping that they'll be weather resistant.

What sexy new Pentax primes are you lusting after?

Advantages of FF

I wouldn't claim that APS-C cameras are just bridge cameras to FF. The smaller format does a damn good job of standing on its own. That being said, I'm going to run with the metaphor anyway.

There are plenty of people who will never have a need or desire to cross that format bridge. Nonetheless, with the K mount full frame officially on it's way now it will soon be entirely possible to have have one foot on each side of that bridge and still firmly be in Pentax land. Unfortunately, people who are simply asking and answering questions about what to expect on the other side of that metaphorical bridge can't seem to do so on this forum without a non-metaphorical troll butting in each and every time.

Often times I get a laugh out of watching the troll jump up and down while it waves its arms and grunts repeatedly. But after a while, it reduces to simply being obnoxious, unnecessary, and unwelcome. It's as if the troll believes that if it is relentlessly louder than everyone else it will succeed in preventing anyone from journeying across that bridge or even casting a glance in that direction. Well, the troll won't ever succeed to that extreme but it sure has made it difficult for people on the two sides of that format bridge to have an intelligent and fruitful conversation. It's a shame.

K-30 vs. the Nikon D3200

I wouldn't be that bothered if we don't but I'd expect that it'd sell well if Pentax were to have such an option. It'd make it easier to recommend Pentax DSLRs to people looking to get into the game as well. I had to recommend the D5100 to a friend the other day just because the Pentax options, for new gear, were out of her price range. Mostly though, I had to recommend the D5200 to her because she has her heart set on a swivel screen. At B&H right now you can get a D5100 with a two lens zoom kit (18-55 & 55-200), with bag, and SD card for $800. I think that's a pretty nice little beginner package. The D5100 is only $550 on its own these days. The fact that you can get a 35mm and 50mm f/1.8 for $200 each also makes Nikon a decent system for those who want good IQ and some options for upgrading without spending a fortune. If Pentax had a lower level body with some crowd-pleaser features like a swivel screen along with good budget lens offerings, Pentax would be a more viable option for the large beginner crowd. I don't know if they have to cater to that crowd to be competitive or not; I'm actually much more interested in them competing at the higher level with a FF body, FF lenses, and new flash system.

FF Under Development

What indication do you have that Pentax can't buy FF sensors from Sony? They manage to sell their 16mp APS-C sensor for multiple models of Nikon and Pentax cameras plus they put them their own bodies. That 16mp sensor probably won't be in production for much longer which will open up production resources. If Sony has a customer waiting to give them money, I'm sure they'll find a way to sell them their wares. It doesn't make sense for Sony to turn away profitable business. There might be a delay of some sort but I seriously doubt that would be a real reason for Pentax to have to source sensors from someone other than Sony. The D800 isn't going to maintain the kind of volume sales that it has, they will surely tapper off and settle down soon if they haven't already.

3 things you wish you knew when you started

Three things I wish I knew when I started:

1. Zooms can be convenient and aren't necessarily shabby by any means when it comes to IQ, but fast primes can be exquisite and are extremely satisfying to use. Get at least one large aperture prime to have in your kit.
2. Post-processing is very important. Do what you have to to get some good software and then learn how to use it well.
3. Off-camera flash can make a HUGE difference. Strobes open up a whole other side of photography. Not sure what the term would be but there's got to be some equivalent to LBA for lighting gear.

Pentax full frame rumour

The FF market is bound to get bigger. And it's not just about that specific portion of the market; it's about creating an attractive and complete system, one with an upgrade path that will draw in new customers. Sure, you have to have FF lenses to make a perfectly seamless transition from APS-C to FF, but there is a crop mode in the Nikon models for APS-C lenses and people do pay attention to what lenses they buy so that their options remain open. People switching to Nikon and Canon is at least a small problem for Pentax. "Most pros do not use FF". I seriously doubt that's at all accurate. Over 90% of the pro's blogs and websites I visit are FF users. Sure, some pros started off with APS-C/H but nearly all seem to have eventually moved up. The upward migration to FF is only going to increase as sensor prices come down. So Pentax hasn't had a big presence in the pro arena, how about among enthusiasts then? There are more and more enthusiasts shelling out for FF even though they don't "need" it. Does Pentax really not want any slice of that pie? Pentax hasn't had that large of a presence in any market for some time so why wouldn't they want to increase their presence wherever they can? Full frame is at arms reach for Pentax, they should take hold of it already!

I'm skeptical about how many photographers are going to want to spend top dollar to get all the highest grade gear possible for APS-C just to end up being a hop and a skip away investment-wise from having a full frame set up but not have the option available to them. Pentax does have a great set of lenses with the DA Limited primes. Zooms are something of a different matter. And other than being able to reach truly wide angle focal lengths, FF lenses work plenty well on APS-C.

That's simply ridiculous, and rather transparently condescending. AF absolutely matters, to lots and lots and lots of photographers in myriad situations. MF is great and all, but in fast moving/changing situations AF can mean the difference between getting the shot or not, which is extremely important to pros and amateurs alike. And APS-C is not exactly the best suited to manual focusing.

Pentax full frame rumour

Sometimes I like analogies, even when they're less than perfect.

Listening to people argue against Pentax coming out with a full frame camera is like listening to someone argue that Dodge should only make 2x4 pickups with V6 engines and leave the 4x4 V8 business to Ford and Chevy. The argument seems to go that a V6 engine (APS-C sensor) can handle a heavy enough load and a 2x4 drivetrain (APS-C lenses, etc.) does well enough on most terrain so nobody really needs the 2 extra cylinders of the V8 (FF sensor) or 4x4 drivetrain (FF lenses, etc.), never mind that they use the same chassis (mount). Well, some people like to drive (shoot) off road (fast wide angle) and haul (shoot) very heavy payloads (low light, high ISO). These same people might also like the higher torque (greater light collection) and stickier traction (narrower DOF) offered by the 4x4 V8 (FF system). I understand that implementing the bigger engine and four wheel drivetrain isn't entirely cakewalk; Dodge would have to design the differentials (shake reduction), transfer case (mirror/pentaprism), beefed up exhaust system (buffer/processor), and whatnot to make it all work, but I think those are entirely doable and certainly worthwhile for Dodge to be able to regain and maintain its serious truck maker image, performance, and appeal. I like my Dodge 2x4 V6 truck, as a matter of fact I like it a lot, but one day I hope to be able to park a 4x4 V8 next to it because I would really like to have the additional capability that it offers for whenever the time calls or just if I get the hankering. And since I've been driving around with those piss on Chevy and piss on Ford stickers, I'd feel awfully silly going and buying either one of those two pickups.

Pentax To Announce the K-3 Full Frame DSLR At Photokina
Posted By TomTextura

I'll admit, a 5DmkII or D700 right now looks like a decent deal. However, the competition for a Pentax FF won't be old generations of Canon or Nikon. Just like the K-5 replacement won't be competing with the D7000, 60D, or 7D when it comes out, the Pentax FF won't be competing with the 5DmkII or the D700 if/when it appears. While I am hopeful that any Pentax FF camera will be competitive price-wise, I believe the most important factors will be IQ and QC. If it can match the D800 it'll draw plenty of fans from the current Pentax users and will likely attract others for many of the same reasons any of us here went with Pentax instead of one of the other DSLR makers.

As has already been pointed out, there are a number of FF lenses currently available, with the FA Limiteds being excellent primes. For some of us those lenses alone would be enough reason to take the plunge. The Fuji X-Pro has had quite a bit of success with only three lenses, ones that can't manual focus worth a damn either, no legacy glass options, next to no third party options, and the system is not exactly cheap. You can get an adapter for Leica lenses though, not that that would make for any kind of savings. Pentax isn't going to take over the DSLR market with the release of a full frame camera, but I have no reason to believe that they won't be able to increase their share of it by doing so.

Price isn't going to be the only thing that will determine its success. I actually think they could release a FF camera at $3,000 and if it were to have all of the other qualities that we love about Pentax (great ergonomics, weather resistance, smallish size, and class leading IQ) then it really won't be a hard sell. Throw in two or three new compatible lenses (particularly f/2.8 zooms covering 24 to 200), improved auto focus, and new flash, and my bet is it won't be that long before you'll see a handful of pros using the Pentax system, along with a bunch of industry buzz about the new system.

I like to be optimistic and believe that the next couple of years could be very defining for Pentax. However, I also believe that that kind of turn around for Pentax will largely hing on whether or not they release a FF camera that will give their current base an upgrade path worth taking. If they don't break into the full frame arena then they will be shutting themselves out of what is from many indications a growing market, a market that means more and more buyers as sensor prices go down, and one that attracts more new comers and enthusiasts who want to have the same quality tools the pros use.

I noticed from the EXIF data that you were shooting in the landscape auto mode. That was definitely working against you here since it resulted in a small aperture, f/11, that meant a very high ISO had to be used, 6400. When using a wide angle, 18mm in this case, and from a relatively far distance you can get away with much larger apertures than f/11 and still have deep depth of field. An aperture of somewhere between f/4 and f/5.6 would have been more appropriate for this rather dim, indoor, wide angle scene, and for being as far back as you were from any subject.

I click on the pic at one end of the displayed filtered pics, press shift and hold while clicking on the pic at the opposite end, then right click on the any pic in the selection and choose delete photos from the options. Hopefully I explained that well enough to follow.

I haven't used flags, mostly because I don't know a short cut for them and try to use as few mouse movements as possible (I have tendonitis), but I might try that way as what jatrax described sounds pretty slick too. There's probably a short cut for flags that I just don't know or haven't set up.

Having just looked at Canon's and Nikon's lens prices for primes at the wide and telephoto focal lengths, I think Pentax could attract serious photographers with pricing new DFA lenses competitively. If Pentax were to offer a good price to quality ratio on the FF camera body and then do the same for their new FF lenses, I believe they would have lots of appeal. They don't need the extra expense of IS or VR in their lens either, well, except that it is beneficial for stabilizing the scene in the VF when using a telephoto lens. Nikon's 24mm f/1.4 lens is $2,000 and Canon's is $1,600! Pentax could perhaps offer a 24mm at f/1.8 or f/2 for only slightly above $1,000 to draw business. Nikon's 200mm f/2 is $5,800 and Canon's is $6,000! What if Pentax could offer a 200mm f/2 or f/2.4 for somewhere between $2,000 and $4,000? I think it would be more difficult for Pentax to differentiate themselves pricewise in the 135mm range. Looking at Canikon's prime lens offerings and then imagining what Pentax could do puts a different twist on the speculation of how Pentax would compete and fair in the FF market. The recent UPP fiasco doesn't bode well though for this addition of FF lenses to the Pentax FF speculation equation.

Suggesting I need a shrink is a bit much normhead. It's also rather presumptuous to think that just because I'm in favor of gun rights I would immediately resort to lethal force in any altercation and without considering the risks or implications to myself and loved ones. For the record, I will always be in favor of deescalation and peaceable solutions. Also for the record, I will at no time assume that all individuals can be reasoned with or that all violent conflicts can be avoided, as that would be the epitome of naiveté. Peace is an ideal, a worthy one to be sure, but at no time in all of history has this world been an ideal or peaceful place. Call me a pessimist but I see no reason to believe that it will ever be a peaceful world. Too many people are just too effed up for that to ever be the case. Ideals are for striving towards; they are are not premises on which to base all decisions. It's not a black and white world; it's a world full of grey, sadly, sometimes gunmetal grey.

Put the On switch all the way to the right. Put the switch between the On/Off switch and the round dial all the way to the left so that it's lined up under the green flash arrows. Put the switch on the ride side of the body, by the battery compartment, up so that the yellow/gold color shows. Press the Format button until you see the screen display "Digital" in the upper left-hand corner. Put the switch on the right side of the flash body down so that the gray/silver color shows. Press the Mode button until you see the screen display "P-TTL" in the upper left-hand corner. Make sure you have the diffuser slid into it's storage slot. Press the Zoom button until you see "A. Zoom" display in the top middle of the screen. You should be set to go.

Good luck!

Everyone deserves a break to relax and have some fun. It's important for physical and mental health. You especially deserve your vacation if you've never really had one!

Awesome! Photography is so much fun and combined with a vacation like the one you have planned is sure to be a blast.

I'm curious if you have a few extra things. Do you have a tripod, an IR shutter remote, or an ND filter? The tripod can be used for all sorts of things but with the IR remote you can set up family shots with all of you in the pic. Pentax has a waterproof remote too. With the tripod and a dark ND filter, like 10 stops, you can do long exposures in the day time. There are some great examples of this style on the forum. The member Twitch comes to mind as having some impressive shots with daytime long exposures using a 10 stop ND filter. There would be lots of cool things to shoot that way at a place like Disney World; you could really capture the sense of all the movement of the rides and people. Getting your family to accommodate and put up with your photography experiments is another matter though.

Whether you have an external flash or not I'd recommend experimenting with slow speed sync and trailing curtain sync in order to capture some interesting shots showing motion. I would especially recommend this once the sun is down when you're still in the park and the lights on the rides are all lit up. The leading and trailing lights of the rides would be really cool looking, I imagine.
