For each Pentaxian buying K-1 another Nikon/Canon shooter jumped ship to Pentax

It is perfectly reasonable for a company to be faithful to the photography.
Photography is like music; I can listen to same songs and albums for days, months, years, and look at favourite photographs every day. I frame them, and admire them.

But I cannot get myself watching same movie every day; once in several years, perhaps. Even then, it is just too much effort I cannot justify. Even worse, to montage a movie worth watching again, it takes weeks!

Moving pictures are a different story, one that is not at all important. Our mind already works in that mode all the time! We cannot turn movie mode from our heads, and our mind yearns for a moment of stillness that a fine photograph enables. And that moment, uninterrupted with moving pictures, is so precious, because it is the only moment we can consciously experience present tense, and living in now — cessation of time.

That is why photography has a healing, creative power, because it cures us from everyday motion sickness and living by the clock.

Speaking of Pentaxians...

I wonder how the new folks will be indoctrinated into the fold?

Now that I've had some time with the K1 (astonishing IQ/over the moon with it) I wonder what will be the "commonality of frustration" that binds us together?
The K1 is surely going to bring people into the fold because it is SO good.

I can't imagine anyone that uses a K1 to be disappointed.

We will never have another 16 years to wait for something...does that present a problem?

Granted, most of us just focused on shooting and doing our *thing* and loving the special nature of Pentax cameras.
However, many many times the whole "FF" thing was thrown in our faces.
Sure, we knew it was often thrown by fools who were more interested in specs than photography, but the ignoring of those slings and barbs *did* form some of the thick skin we endured as Pentaxians.

Now, with an awesome APS-C, Medium Format and now FF, we have nothing in that regard to "toughen our skins" with.

I guess we are back to a time, when we didn't have to feel threatened?
When we didn't have to bond with a brand that people loved to make fun of?

Are we on verge of being "cool"?

Maybe new Pentaxians will have a new take on being so, and maybe some of us (Older Pentaxians) will pine for the "good ol'"days, when we were the true rebels of the photography world and kept a brand/dream alive?

Maybe Pentax will NEVER be mainstream or cool.
And if we keep getting cameras like the K3/K1/645 - who cares?

:)

Those of you who don't see the point in having an aperture ring on the lens, which would be most inconvenient?
1. Aperture ring on lens to adjust aperture, front e-dial to adjust shutter, rear e-dial to adjust ISO, or
2. Front e-dial to adjust shutter, rear e-dial to adjust aperture, ISO button + rear/front e-dial to adjust ISO?

Works on Z1/Z1p too and it works thanks to digital pin, absent from A lenses.

I know I shouldn't, but I just have to answer this:

One of the reasons I (we) want an aperture feeler is so the selected aperture can be displayed in the viewfinder (when set from the aperture ring).

Anyone who wants to claim that this wouldn't be possible should also explain what has changed since the MZ-S, where it is possible and works fine. (It only works with F and newer lenses though. I have never understood why it doesn't work with A lenses.)

The introduction of a metric system and logical dating is just the start. The English language, on both sides of the waters, needs a total makeover. The question about English as an international lingua franca has been addressed by the European Commission. Im sure the Aussies and even the Americans will follow suite when they learn about the improvements suggested by the commission. Let me quote the press release:

EUrenglish
Important message from European headquarters. The European Union Commission have announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, however, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as Eurenglish.
In the first year, 's' will be used instead of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of the 'k'. Not only will this klear up konfusion but keyboards kan have one letter less.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome 'ph' will be replased by 'f'. This will make words like 'fotograf' 20 persent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful, and they should go.
By the fourth yer, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' by 'z' and 'w' by 'v'. During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou', and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.
Ze drem vil finali kum tru!

DFA* 20 f2.8
DFA* 85 F1.4
DFA* 135 F2.8
...and I'd ditch the DA 21Ltd.
As it is, the DA series is missing a wider * lens itself.

A few here have said 'But a 135/1.8 would be huge' - but Pentax made a 135/1.8 A* that is very manageable. Corners are bright and sharp so I'm not sure that the circle of coverage would need to be enlarged to provide full SR, and adding AF and WR would not increase the girth unreasonably. In other words, I think a 135/1.8 is entirely feasible without becoming so big that it no longer 'felt like a Pentax'.

I also don't agree with the poster that said that the low light abilities of the new body would render fast lenses unnecessary. I like wide apertures, on certain lenses, for the shallow DoF rather than only for low light reasons. The larger senor of FF gives shallower DoF, and it would be a shame to lose that particular benefit by then going for slower glass.

-----

My own wishlist? A lot of what I'd like would be updates of classic Pentax glass. The 'three amigos' should be fully supported - it would be a slap in the face to loyal Pentaxians if they aren't - but bringing out new versions with quick-shift, Aero-Bright II, and weather sealing would surely make for real winners in the market.

(Those who've grown up with using those lenses on APS-C will probably want a fourth amigo at the longer end - Pentax's excellent older 105 and 120 designs would be good starting points.)

The old 15mm and 20mm lenses are classics, and updates there would be good. They don't need to be fast. The 50/1.2 has a look all its own, and that too could be updated.

Finally - bring back the 85/1.4 (preferably with the rendering of the older, pre-AF design, though many portraitists prefer the AF one's look) and more than anything I want the 200/4 macro that I've always lusted after to be revived: one of the sharpest lenses ever made, by anyone.

-----

There's plenty of others Ricoh will need if they want Pentax to 'compete' (300/2.8, 400/2.8, 600/4 and some fast wides, all of which they have made in the past. Personally, I'd like an AF version of the old 600/5.6.) We can all figure out what they will be, and I'm sure an early update of the 50/1.8 will be one of Ricoh's priorities.

I support all that because it's in all our interests for Pentax to be competitive so that it stays in the game and doesn't have to raise its prices to 'niche player' levels.

Nonetheless, I also very sincerely hope that there'll still be room for Ricoh to play to Pentax's strength in medium speed, very compact primes; and that the 'look' of Pentax glass won't be lost. I love that look, it's different to Canon's, Nikon's (and Sony's, which sucks) and also not the same as Leica: it's that look (and the superior ergonomics) that kept me with Pentax through the dark years, and it would be a great shame if it were lost in a flurry of computer 'optimised' me-too glass.

I hope of renewed FA Limiteds as granted therefore my wishlist of totally new ones can be like such:
DFA 22/2.4 Limited (super wide, FF alternative for DA15@apsc, focal length between 20-23 and max. aperture can be up to f/4.0 - just keep it compact with filter size max 58mm)
DFA 117/2.5 Limited (compact moderate tele to suite role of 77Ltd@apsc, filter size possibly 49mm)
DFA 200/4.0 Limited (compact tele, focal length in range of 176-200, if on shorter side then can be brighter like f/3.2, but keep filter size max 58mm)

That will give us line of FF Limiteds like: 22, 31, 43, (70), 77, 117, 200

DFA lenses, I would like a 24mm and 28mm. 24mmm should be big, with fast aperture, WR, QS, distance scales, the works (* rating?). The 28mm should be rather small, not as small as a limited, but around the size of the old M series 28mm lenses, maybe smaller. This one should be just regular DA like 35mm 2.4 and 50mm f1.8 right now. That way the FF would have a nice high-end UWA, and a decent, affordable wide angle. And these focal lengths would be fine on APSC as well. Pentax is missing them right now.
For the third DFA.. I don't really have a priority. Maybe something in the 70-135mm range and with bright aperture. I think lots of people would like that. Bonus points for WR.

We already have the following:
FA31/1.8
FA43/1.9
DA*55/1.4
FA77/1.8
DFA100/2.8
DA*200/2.8
DA*300/4.0

Frankly, I'm not interested in full frame lenses above portrait lengths - APS-C does that better, lighter and cheaper.

So my three lens wishlist would be:
DFA*24/1.8 (I would accept f/2.0, but f/1.4 might be too much glass)
DFA*35/1.4 (it needs to faster than the FA31 to have a raison d'etre)
DFA*135/2.0 (f/1.8 would be huge, and 85mm is too close to the FA77 or the DA*55 on APS-C)

But I'm confident whatever is offered will be great, because Ricoh has barely put a foot wrong for some time.

First of all the new tres amigos: DFA 31, 43 and 77; all with DC, WR, quick shift and 9 circular aperture blades.
Then other three DFA* with very fast aperture 24 f/2, 50 f/1.4 (a new version of the f/1.2 will be a smash hit) and 85 f/1.4

Fingers crossed

That's a common judgement but as long as we don't know how the FF camera will handle the DA* (non-DFA) lenses, we can't be sure.

@biz-engineer:
Pentax was able to launch no less than 8 lenses in 2008, including 4 DA* and 1 DA Limited.
Having - let's say - 5 zooms this year i.e. the 2 DFAs already announced, the kit lens and another 2 lenses from the roadmap, and launching the 2 remaining zooms together with 2-3 primes in 2016 should be within their capacity.
Let's not forget that Ricoh Imaging was preparing for the FF since 2012.

Your scenario doesn't make sense for a camera maker trying to push a new product line. 4 lenses on the roadmap, 3 more years until the 5th? No way.

Top 3 prime, that other system have but Pentax don't.

1. DFA Limited 24mm F1.4 WR
24mm is wide enough for me.

2. DFA Limited 35mm F1.4 WR

3. DFA Limited 135 F1.8 WR
- agree with OP on this, and Pentax do have a A* 135 f1.8 before.

I would like a new FA*85 f1.4, but I already have this lens. :)

You know, back when film SLR cameras were a thing -- everybody remembers those, right? -- every single manufacturer used the same "sensor" and had the same "crop ratio." And many other characteristics were pretty darn similar too (even if not directly compatible), e.g. register distance, mounts, lens availability, metering capabilities . . .

And yet somehow there was room in the marketplace for Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Oly, Minolta, and others.

Pentax doesn't need a format or sensor to itself. It doesn't need to define some kind of special category of cameras, like underwater mirrorless full-frame self-portrait cameras.

If Pentax can make a camera that's competitive and solid, that offers a good balance between price and performance, and has good controls, and MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO CAMERA BUYERS, then the customers will come. Not overnight necessarily, but eventually.

Hyundai and Kia started selling cars in in the US within the last few decades. They haven't offered any special unique vehicles that nobody else can. But they have been patient, and have made cars with decent pricing and (in recent years at least) good reliability, and now they are fairly well regarded and sell a lot of cars.

If Ricoh is really in this for the long-haul, I have every expectation they will be able to succeed. They just need to execute well on the fundamentals.
